The movie, Big Fish, mainly focused on a father, William Bloom, and son, Edward Bloom, relationship. William was a fanatic storyteller, much to the dismay of his son. Edward felt like he never truly got to know who his father really was; all he knew were the stories. Edward’s stories he told his son were not harmful, nor were they unimportant; they taught life lessons and were important bonding moments between father and son. All throughout Will’s life, his father’s main method of communication was by story. When Will was younger, he believed these stories without question. Edward, not believing his father, ended up becoming so estranged from him that they did not talk to each other for three years. In this moment, William’s stories were harmful to Edward, they caused the relationship to fall apart. However, this was not always the case, as the stories had earlier created a sense of awe and wonder between them. In addition, the whole point of Edward’s stories were to teach life lessons to his son. All of the stories that Edward told were only hyped up versions of what really happened. In reality, Edward had an extremely difficult life. He was a big star in his home town of Ashton, but decided to leave. Along that path he ended up working in a circus and meeting the love of his life, whom he lost. After working for three years at that circus, learning one thing about her from the ringmaster, Amos Calloway, he finally gathers enough information to find her. The final bit of information was her name, Sandra Templeton. Edward set out to find her only to learn that she was already engaged, and to another person from Ashton, Edward’s rival, Don Price. The book has vivid imagery making the reader imaging as if her or she was their right beside him in his whole investigation. Such as “In the winter of 1978, through, a fierce blizzard hit southern Connecticut. Temperatures were often below zero and at one point it snowed for thirty-three hours straight. Perhaps it was the cold that killed the fish, or the copper sulfate I helped the caretaker drag through the pond the previous summer to manage the algal blooms, or maybe even the fishermen id noticed trespassing on the estate one day, scoping out my grounds. But whatever caused it, after that never again did I spot a living fish in that pond again.”(Greenberg 12-13). This quote shows how good his imagery, tone, and diction is, when I read it all I could think of is that storm and the pond. The author has an excellent writing style and keeps the reader wanting more. Even though the book has a lot of good things for it the only thing I would tell the author would to give more connections of him to the story. It says “The transformation of salmon and sea bass from kingly and holiday wild fish into everyday farmed variants is a trend that continues with different animals around the globe.”(Greenberg 195). With giant in time the idea is that the historical figures in this case Edward, are greatly modified to make them seem larger than life.In the movie his father also tells him, he makes himself a hero and more than the orginary man. Larger than life, a giant in every story and reimaging of his life. All the things that happen in Edward’s life is told to make him seem a lot more interesting. Though all the misadventures that Edward goes through life, is massively exaggerated and altered to make him look much more likeable and interesting as a character. This is far from the truth and is the main problem with the movie story line.Will, Edward’s son wants to know who is father truly is behind the stories and myths that his father use to tell him as a child and uncover what this giant is really like before his time is out. Edward used 2nd person, which uses the word “you” a lot. He also had a very harsh and blunt tone about it. She had to watch her father leave her mother, and “the gloomy atmosphere of their once happy home overclouded the morning of [her] life” (187). She had to watch her mother suffer from a heartache that eventually killed her, and was then given a lifelong babysitter. It then seemed that Edward attempted to buy the love of his daughter with the promise of financial stability. It seemed as though he tried to buy his way out of guilt by employing the best educators for his daughter. Despite his efforts, he formed an unhealthy relationship with alcohol and met death after falling from his horse on route to see Xarifa. Because of these ill-fortuned events, Xarifa found herself thrown into a relationship with a man that she might not have otherwise pursued. Similarly, the children of the world today find themselves suffering as a result of their relationship with their parents. How involved a parent is in a child’s life constantly affects the way the child behaves and the actions they take.

Based on a true story, this biographical drama centered around Antwone “Fish” Fisher. In the beginning of the story, he was a sailor prone to violent outbursts. On the verge of being kicked out of the Navy for repeated fighting, he is sent to a naval psychiatrist for help. Refusing to open up, Dr. Davenport slyly slips his way into getting Antwone to talk. Antwone eventually breaks down and reveals a horrific childhood with neglect and abuse. With the help of Dr. Davenport, he is able to face his past and strive for success to find the family he has never met. At the same time, he is able to turn his life around and change it dramatically. In the end, he is reunited with both his father’s side of the family and his mother who has abandoned him.
A fish is a creature that preceded the creation of man on this planet. Therefore, Bishop supplies the reader with a subject that is essentially constant and eternal, like life itself. In further examination of this idea the narrator is, in relation to the fish, very young, which helps introduce the theme of deceptive appearances in conjunction with age by building off the notion that youth is ignorant and quick to judge. Bishop's initial description of the fish is meant to further develop this theme by presenting the reader with a fish that is "battered," "venerable," and "homely." Bishop compares the fish to "ancient wallpaper.
He teaches the kid what to do in order to successfully reel in a large, beautiful fish. Ironically, the narrator is the one who learns from the kid in the end. At the beginning of the story, everything is described negatively, from the description of the kid as a “lumpy little guy with baggy shorts” to his “stupid-looking ’50s-style wrap-around sunglasses” and “beat-up rod”(152). Through his encounter with the boy, the narrator is able to see life in a different way, most notable from how he describes the caught tarpon as heavy, silvery white, and how it also has beautiful red fins (154). Through the course of the story, the narrator’s pessimistic attitude changes to an optimistic one, and this change reveals how inspiring this exchange between two strangers is. In Daniel Wallace’s novel, Big Fish: A Novel of Mythic Proportions and Tim Burton’s film, Big Fish, the relationship between the dying protagonist, Edward Bloom and his estranged son, William Bloom, is centrally to the story in both the novel and film. Like many fathers in today's society, Edward Bloom wishes to leave his son with something to remember him by after he is dead. It is for this reason the many adventures of Edward Bloom are deeply interwoven into the core of all the various stories Edward tells to mystify his son with as a child. Despite the many issues father and son have in their tense relationship as adults, Daniel Wallace and Tim Burton’s adaptation of Wallace’s novel focalizes on the strained relationship between Edward Bloom and William Bloom. In both Wallace’s novel and Burton’s film, they effectively portray how the relationship between Edward Bloom and William Bloom is filled with bitter resentment and indifference towards each other. Only with William’s attempt to finally reconcile with his dying father and navigating through his father fantastical fables does those established feelings of apathy and dislike begin to wane. With Burton’s craftily brilliant reconstruction of Wallace’s story does the stories of Edward Bloom and his son blossom onto screen.
Fly fishing is not what this story is all about, although it might seem so at first. Neither is it about religion, even though the father’s first line is: "In our family, there was no clear line between religion and fly fishing." Yes, these two things are themes that run through the story and add to its power. But there is so much more. It depicts a place of beauty, history, myth, and mystery, it is a triangle of earth in Montana where the writer grew up. This however is out of order because Edward meets Karl long before his son is born. In the novel Edward doesn’t really have a helper because Karl doesn’t serve the same purpose. Edward takes many tests, and everytime he makes it out alive he passes. This, like most of the parts of this hero quest, happen before his son is born. The boon is Edward’s stories and his adventures. It’s the things that his relationship with his son are built off of. In the movie, Will constantly complains that he doesn’t know his father because Edward has never told him a fact about himself.
