The film was directed by Tim Burton, who also directed the movies, The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993), Corpse Bride(2005), and Batman 1989. The film does a great job on highlighting the main message of the movie which is Difference. Edward Scissorhands is a fascinating story about a man created by Vincent Price, an inventor of amazing creations. A woman, Peg, finds Edward Scissorhands, while she looks for a customer for her makeup investment, alone in a dark and gloomy with uplifting topiary in the garden. Edward tells Peg that his father never woke up. Peg then takes Edward to her own home because she cannot bear the loneliness of Edward’s home. Edward then becomes famous around Peg’s neighborhood to being famous around town because of his outstanding scissorhands.
Would you let a man with scissors for hands in your, that you found in a dark evil-looking castle? I know I wouldn’t, but a mom named Peg would. Peg, who is very empathetic, decides to go sell Avon to the evil mansion across the street, but then finds a boy with scissors for hands and decides to take him home. Edward seems to be doing fine in the community, but is soon seen as a monster because he is framed by a bully name Jim. The movie is Edward, the protagonist, trying to recuperate his innocence and he won’t stop until he does. Throughout the movie, director Tim Burton used the stylistic elements of juxtaposition and symbolism to show the character’s personalities and to show how some places in the story are opposites.

He falls in love with an American soldier, and undergoes a sex change in order to marry him and leave East Berlin. The operation is botched, leaving him/her as a physical contradiction. Not quite a man, but not yet a woman, Hansel (now Hedwig) has what she describes as an “angry inch.” When describing it in lighter terms, she calls it a “Barbie doll crotch.” Upon arriving in America, the soldier leaves her the same day the Berlin wall comes down. Destroyed, Hedwig spends some time discovering her new self and eventually finds a soul mate in a young boy named Tommy Speck (Michael Pitt). They collaborate musically and romantically, but upon discovering Hedwig’s secret he leaves with all of their music. He becomes a huge rock star, living Hedwig’s dream while simultaneously leaving her in the dust. From then on, Hedwig and her band “The Angry Inch” follow Tommy as he tours the nation while Hedwig tries desperately to gain the notoriety she deserves for her music. On a tiny snowflake floating through the air, exists the town of Who-ville, home of the Whos. The town is joyously preparing for the coming of Christmas. The opening scene is full of noise and excitement with the townspeople hustling and bustling about shopping for gifts. Cheerful Christmas music plays in the background while the countdown until Christmas Day is announced over the town’s loudspeaker. Bright colors combined with unusual hairstyles are seen on the people of Who-ville. The town itself is covered with a multitude of lights, decorated trees, and wreaths.

Burton also draws on the relationship between the princess and the prince, commonly found in fairy tales. By using various features found in the gothic horror genre and the fairy tale genre, Edward Scissorhands is able to sway us to think about the consequences of judging people who are different, it influences us to question what true love is and changes the way we view who can be the prince and princess.

Tim Burton’s movie Edward Scissorhands explores the idea of an outcast by applying symbolism in a variety of ways. The journey that Edward faced while trying to become part of society falls under the typical “hero story archetype,” but Burton’s unique symbols make the story unprecedented. One symbol that illustrated the theme of individuality was the costuming. When Edward first was found he was wearing leather from head to toe, but Peg gave him a dress shirt and pants to wear so he would fit in with the rest of the neighborhood. Even though he put the clothes on without hesitation, he never took off his leather attire, which implies that although he could be changed on the outside, on the inside he refused to conform. Furthermore, as the movie progressed, Edward’s social acceptance declined rapidly. In turn, Burton made Edward’s costume slowly tear up, until the “mob” scene where he ripped off the dress shirt completely, which showed how he will never become what everyone else wanted him to be. The year was 1984 and it was time for a new villain to enter into the horror genre. A villain that was agile, intelligent, almost inviolable yet viscous, and by all means deadly. A Nightmare on Elm Street introduced the distinctive presence of Fred Krueger to the horror industry and to the audience. Freddy Krueger took the center stage and with him a new era of horror films began. This horribly scarred man who wore a ragged slouch hat, dirty red-and-green striped sweater, and a glove outfitted with knives at the fingers reinvented the stalker genre like no other film had.
