Edward Hopper was born in 1882, in NY, into a middle class family, which encouraged the art work and career that he wanted to pursue. He studied at the NY School of art from 1900 to 1906. (Edward Hopper Paintings, Biography, and Quotes) His main influence was by the great European realists Diego Velazquez, Goya, Edouard Manet. He was one of the most important observers of the American scene beginning in the 1920s. He often portrayed solitary and isolated figures that seem to be aching with loneliness or multiple figures that do not interact. Hopper also recorded architectural scenes, both rural and urban, instilling each with a similar feeling of abandonment; he chronicled the ravages of the Depression by depicting forsaken farms and “For Sale” signs on suburban streets. (Spaulding) Edwards Hopper is known for about 24+ famous paintings ranging from 1921 to 1963 but we are going to focus on just 3 of them: The Drugstore, 1927, New York Movie, 1939 and Nighthawks, 1942.
The Drug Store was painted in 1927 and sold for 1,500 to a Boston lawyer who favored bold images. The painting was an oil painting on a canvas. It depicts Silbers Pharmacy which is located on the corner of the street. It focuses light on the display window of the store, which reads “Prescriptions Drugs Ex-Lax” on the blue banner above the display window. Inside the window, there are two blue curtains with a red one placed in the middle. There are two objects which could be a light, vase or some type of object, one in blue and one in red on opposite sides. There are several books propped up for display in the window. There are no people included in the painting; which seems to mean its sole purpose is to focus on the store. He utilized the brilliance of light, his ...

...a man sitting alone, a couple sitting together and the server of the dinner. There is not much expression on the face of the server or on the faces of the couple and the man sitting alone you cannot see his face. From the look of the setting inside the diner, there is no sign of communication. This painting places a sense of loneliness into the moment. Hopper depicts the emotional isolation of the average American. (Sayre) This painting could be described in so many ways, with so many words however; loneliness and despair seem the best fitting.
The majority of his paintings are viewpoints which seem to always include women. When taking a closer look, there is an vulnerability in many of the women but you are never really able to place your finger on whether they are in a state of loneliness solitude or desolation. This is a reoccurring theme throughout Hoppers work.
“Those who do not learn history are doomed to repeat it.” George Santayana stated what happens if we do not learn from our past. After the Civil War the United States wanted to build itself back up. The nation was in rubble because half of the country was fighting the other. That left it in a sad and fallen state. The issue of slavery was a long debated topic. They thought they could get over this and start anew. Reconstruction means the actions or process of rebuilding what has been damaged or destroyed. Did the North or the South kill Reconstruction? That issue is still up for debate. In my opinion, the South killed Reconstruction and stopped it dead in its tracks. The South did not respect the African American’s right to vote and would terrorize
Vincent Van Gogh is one of the world’s greatest and most well-known artists, but when he was alive he considered himself to be a complete failure. It was not until after he died that Van Gogh’s paintings received the recognition they deserved. Today he is thought to be the second best Dutch artist, after Rembrandt. Born in 1853, he was one of the biggest artistic influences of the 19th century. Vincent Van Gogh created a new era of art, he learned to use art to escape his mental illness, and he still continues to inspire artists over 100 years later.
Loneliness can be seen in many characters from this book. One of the characters that is lonely in this book is Candy. Candy is fun, nice, happy with how he is, he also loves his dog, a lot, infact his dog is the only one who he has been with most of his life. But none of this is what causes him to be lonely. The reason he is lonely is because of his physical appearance, he is old and this is the main thing causes him to be lonely. “You seen what they done to my dog tonight? They says he wasn’t good to himself nor nobody else. When they can me here i wisht somebody’d shoot me - Candy”. This quote shows how Candy was so lonely that he would rather want someone to kill himself instead of his dog because without his dog, he is now even more lonely. He is more lonelier than when he was before because be...
The definition of solitary is done or existing alone. I don’t believe that just because this woman is alone in this cafe means she is done or existing alone. I think she is simply minding her own business and living as an independent woman in this hispanic island setting. She shouldn’t have had to come there with a man simply to enjoy herself and to have a fine day by herself. I believe that the misconceptions of the strength of women is what led Aiken to create this painting in the first place. Living in an oppressive environment towards women must have been immensely difficult to a strong woman such as herself. “Café Fortune Teller” is a oil on canvas painting which was created by Mary Hoover Aiken in the year 1933. Mary Hoover Aiken was from Cuba, New York and was alive for eighty seven years. The picture is a self portrait which shows Aiken as a fortune teller in a small island off the coast of Spain, Ibiza. At first glance you would think that the woman is just simply playing solitaire and minding her own business. However a closer in depth analysis shows much more that at a first glance. “A picture is worth a thousand words” is a very fitting statement to describe this painting. There are many strong background details that capitalize on the main theme within the painting itself. This painting is set in the earlier times in hispanic culture where women were deemed of lesser value than their male companions. While we also saw this in american culture in the early 1930’s, this painting shows more of the oppressions mentioned in hispanic culture. There are many theories to what this picture actually depicts however I believe that this has to do with sexism and the courage of women in earlier times. The painting “Cafe Fortune Teller” shows a woman’s strength and men’s skepticism of her in a public setting. The picture in some ways could be seen as sad or even depressing
Now is the time in this period of changes and revolution to use a revolutionary manner of painting and not to paint like before. - Pablo Picasso, 1935. (Barnes)
The poem Edward Hopper and the House by the Railroad by Edward Hirsch extends Edward Hopper’s painting similarly titled The House by the Railroad. In the painting, a desolate, clunky, and gothic style house stands in front of a railroad. The painting’s background is the sky with sunlight, but the sun is not included in the frame. The house has a lot of shadows, its body is white and its slanted roofs are black. But a splash of color is added because the chimney is depicted red. The poem describes the artist’s relationship with the house and the house’s relationship with the artist. The relationship between the painting and the poem is a reflection of the house’s and the artist’s emptiness, sorrow, and awkwardness.
Edward Hopper was a twentieth century artist well known for his works under the category Magic Realism. While most artist of the time were focused on showing off how great their country was as they painted things such as landscapes of rural or urban living, Hopper was more motivated in being a precise observer and painting the world as he really saw it. 1As Avis Berman of Smithsonian Magazine put it, “He reserved his greatest affection for unexceptiona1. . . drawing satisfaction from things that stayed as they were.” He knew the world had amazing things to offer, however, he never sugar coated what the world really was. To him the world wasn't as warm as people wanted to believe. During a time when the economic crisis was full blown, it became

In this style, everything is clear like a movie scene or a picture taken by a professional photographer. Robert Henri teachings inspired Hopper to embrace realism in his art. Edward Hopper likes to paint everyday scenes, and he uses shops, homes, and hotels for inspiration. In Nighthawks 1942 by Edward there is a couple and a single man at the counter meanwhile there is another grabbing something under the counter. You can see the people through the glass window. You can also the dark street and buildings around the restaurant. It was made by using oil on
Born in 1886 Diego Rivera was born to a wealthy family living in Guanajuato, Mexico. At the age of two his twin brother died and a year later Diego Rivera started drawing, his parents caught him drawing on walls and instead of punishing him nurtured his artistic side by enabling him with the supplies he needed. Throughout his life Diego Rivera was dedicated to art, “He began to study painting at an early age and in 1907 moved to Europe. Spending most of the next fourteen years in Paris, Rivera encountered the works of such great masters as Cézanne, Gauguin, Renoir, and Matisse.” Influenced by the work of such great minds Rivera began the search for his own signature and contribution to modern art, “Rivera was searching for a new form of painting, one that could express the complexities of his day and still reach a wide audience.” Rivera found the medium he was looking for, a form of street art involving murals painted on fresh plaster, he returned to Mexico to introduce this new form of art to the public. Rivera soon sewed himself into the art community in America, “His outgoing personality puts him at ...
Archibald Motley Jr. was born in 1891 in New Orleans. Ever since, Archibald was a child he had the desire to be an artist. His family moved to a Chicago neighborhood in the 1890’s, but the family would take frequent trips back to New Orleans in the summer. Later we find out that these two similar settings were the determining factor for Archibald’s paintings. He decided to study art at the Institute of Chicago and was recognized by being one of the few African American artists during that time.
Alienation, the state of being isolated from a group or category that one should be apart of, exists in three forms; man’s alienation from man, man’s alienation from fellow men, and man’s alienation from the world itself. These three classes of alienation are fluid phases of the same process that exists to some extent within every member of society. The intriguing and complex nature of alienation has sparked the interest of many philosophers, artists, and authors around the world, resulting in works of art and literature that attempt to give insight into living life alone. Authors Herman Melville and Frank Kafka both reveal the struggles of functioning set apart from society through the protagonists in their respective short stories; Bartleby the Scrivener, and The Hunger Artist. The overall theme of marginalization in society in both Bartleby the Scrivener and The Hunger
American abract work has became more acceptable for some artists who all had something in common. It gave artist their own emotional them of how he or she feel. Most of the Abstract Expressinism matured in the early 1900s and it came to be more personal to them. By the 1940s most artist has left their styles behind and also learned much from their early work. It also encouraged them create something new that he or she has never done before. It also made it easier for them blend more colors and add more colors to their work to creat a new theme or colors all away around. Most European modernists began to come to New York in the 1930s and 40s to escape a upheaval and war. New York was a things for artists to become famous and show their artwork.
Nighthawks is perhaps the painting that embodies whom Edward Hopper was as an artist. The whole scene of a diner at night creates this entire different mood then it would if it was painted at a different time of the day. When we think of night, there are many things that happen, more obscurity and more curiosity. With this painting you can start to create the narrative, that these individuals are loners, they like to come out at night to escape the day. This idea that these people come to this place to alienate them from the real world is such great metaphor, how night can become a sense of peace for this people.
