Education in our country is a social problem, because millions of poor children are affected by the deplorable and decaying conditions that the buildings where they attend are. Furthermore, a lot of the personnel assigned to teach academics are not qualified to do so. The children that live in a household where the conditions are bellow poverty level, do not received the attention of parents or incentives to reach for higher education. Logically they end up being what they see most of the time, which is criminals. Why is it that we have these conditions in our Country? Do we have any solution to solve the problem? But if we do not live among the poor class, does it affect us?
The conditions exist in part, because of the disproportionate amount of resources that the wealthy receives leaving very little for the poor class. Ironically the amount of poor people in our country is the majority of the population. In wealthy areas schools higher teachers that have proper credentials to teach, because they have the money to pay them. Feeling less frustration for having great schools, with teachers that care for each individual. Teachers would feel satisfaction and less irritation when they can actually are able to develop a plan of curricula and by being able to pay attention to each pupil. As these children grow up they will feel that they have legitimate means to find a good employment. Crime will decrease in enormous quantities, and all the money that is being paid to law enforcement, prisons, courts and all the personnel needed to attend the facilities,welfare, Medicaid. Poorer schools with more diverse populations have poor educational programs. Teachers methodically drone out outdated curriculum on timetables set by standards set by the state. Students are not engaged or encouraged to be creative thinkers. They are often not even given handouts or physical elements of education to touch or feel or engage them into really connecting to the material being presented by the teacher in front of them. Time is not wasted exploring any of the subjects in a meaningful way. As much of the curriculum is gone through as the teacher can get through given the restriction of having a classroom of students that are not picking it up adequately enough according to standardized tests scores. So time is spent re-droning the material to them and re-testing before the cycle repeats in this classroom and other subject classrooms in these types of school. This education is free. As John Gatto writes about in his book, “Against School”, it seems as if the vast majority of students are being taught be blue collared, low paid but obedient citizens. The question “Why is there so much poverty in the United States?” has such a broad spectrum of issues. There is no simple cure or single cause of poverty. According to statistics from the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services, “the 2011 Poverty Guidelines are $10,890 for a single member household and $22,350 for a family of four” (par 13). In addition, “families’ incomes that fall below the threshold given, means that every individual in the household are considered to be in poverty” (par 13). Poverty is too complex an issue to be the result of just one problem, but we can narrow down the subject, to show the effects of how the lack of education can diminish our countries resources and how that has a ripple effect on future generations. Without an education, people receive lower pay; there is an increased rate of crime, and a higher reliance on state and federal aid, which is draining economically.
The current socio-economic climate of the United States and the world at large can best be characterized as one in which access to both opportunity and wealth are increasingly scarce to those living in poverty. While there are a number of contributing factors that create this mass inequality, the scope of this argument will focus on education. The American schooling system is lagging behind globally and the current programs in place are ineffective to the point of being detrimental. This paper asserts that specific changes to the public education system will produce positive outcomes not only in the global ranking but will be additionally beneficial in bridging the opportunity gap and countering the growing culture of classism. As illustrated in these works, from the lack of government support the students face a type of stereotypical inequality or racial inequality that develops the negative attitudes toward the low self-esteem and they learn to fail because schools are failing.
