Education in Afghanistan did not start as a formal system. Originally children were educated privately. Their learning took place in religious locations, in homes and regal courts (Zoy, 2009, p. 18). In 1923, the first Afghan Constitution was created. At this time, education was recognized as the right of all Afghan nationals. However, the growth and development of the education system by the Afghan government really started in 1950s-60s. The government was attempting to build a national identity through education. Political ideology was promoted throughout the education system and textbooks.

Afghanistan has a long history of conflict. Over the past 20 years, the capital city of Kabul has seen some of the most violent fighting. For years, the education system has been manipulated for political purposes. Many parts of Afghanistan are still affected by conflict and war. “Threats from insurgents have resulted in the closing of more than 700 schools depriving more than 300,000 students from access to schooling” (Miriam et al., 2009, p. 22). Parents often keep their children home from school because they fear for their safety. “Every single day, Afghan children are killed or disabled on their way to school” (Miriam et al., 2009, p. …show more content…
9). In 2008, Afghanistan started the development of an inclusive education system (Miriam et al., 2009, p. 9). There currently is not a government support system in place to address the needs of children with disabilities or other special educational needs in Afghanistan. Services vary in quality and are very limited in geographical reach.

For political, social and cultural reasons, the pace of developing an equitable educational system has been slow in Afghanistan. Children, who are affected by conflict and political strife, are the ones most likely to be deprived of adequate education. The Afghan government has not been very successful in providing an equal education for all children. A large number of children still do not have access to education. Children with disabilities have very few opportunities. They remain excluded from the education system (Miriam et al., 2009, p. 7). In Afghanistan, education is not easily attainable especially as a woman. “For girls in much of the country, education remains a dream no more attainable now than it was under the Taliban. If women are educated, that means their children will be too. If the people of the world want to solve the hard problems in Afghanistan--kidnapping, beheadings, crime and even al-Qaeda--they should invest in education”(Baker).This quote explains the struggles that young afghanistan children have to go through by not getting the opportunities that American children get every day. Even after Afghanistan was under the Taliban, it was still rare for children to attend school which is a horrible reality. Education is explained as one Afghanistan's worst problems of this time. Future generations are in trouble if this problem is not fixed. The tragedy that these children are facing needs to evolve towards a better system. Afghanistan’s current educational structure is unacceptable to the growth of children. “It's hard to overstate the amount of work to be done. The literacy rate in the country has dropped below 40 percent for men, and it is believed to be as low as 4 percent for women” (Whitelaw). Though there is clearly a lot of work to be done in the education systems, it is crucial to the well-being of many children that the systems improve to inspire kids that education along with hard work and dedication is essential to future success. From the 1950’s until around 1985 the Soviet Union had Afghanistan under its control. This Soviet involvement in Afghanistan caused the ideologies of communism to spread into the Afghanistan culture. One of the communistic ideas that were assimilated into was the thought that every person is equal. This idea made life a lot easier for the women of Afghanistan. One of the freedoms they were given under Soviet control was the allowance of woman being educated, “The government had sponsored literacy classes for all women. Almost two-thirds of the students at Kabul University were women now… women who were studying law, medicine, engineering” (135) Hosseini expresses this through the character Laila. Laila’s father, Babi, was a professor and strongly urged the necessity for Laila to get an education. He was so dedicated that he would help out Laila with her homework every night. Hosseini expressed this when Laila claimed “Babi thought that the one thing that communists had done right- or at least intended to- ironically, was in the filed of education… More specifically the education of women.” (135). To Babi there was nothing more impertinent than the education of woman in Afghanistan. He knew that when half the population is illiterate the country cannot properly aspire to new and better things. Along with the new right to learn, women’s requirement to cover their skin was relaxed all throughout Afghanistan. ...
The United States is a developed country that people are lucky to be able to live in. In the past however, not everyone was given the same rights. Through legislation and even war, people have fought for change so that we could live in the world that we live in today. Similarly, in Afghanistan people are fighting for their rights everyday. They have been through war and oppression to reach their goals of the freedoms that every person deserves. In this country, women and children are restricted from rights that every person deserves, though they have revolutionized into a country that is somewhat better than it was in the past, they can improve marginally.
Afghanistan since its beginning has been a place of conflict, despair, and at times lost hope. It has been taken advantage of and lost its sense of identity, which has had a direct effect on its people, and there own sense of what justice truly is.
The three very basic rights in America that are not given to Afghan women are marriage, education and speech. Marriage in America is a choice, however in Afghanistan it is more of a business deal for the family. “80 percent of marriages in poor rural areas are either forced or arranged” (Life as an Afghan Woman). The father’s voice in a family overshadows the female leaving her with no say in a life long marriage. If a woman refuses to marry the man she is paired up with she will be punished for her rebellious actions. On the same hand, going to school is not as easy as it is here in America. All women in America are given the privilege by law to attend school free of charge, while it is much more difficult for an Afghan woman to receive an education. “ Only 40% of Afghan girls attend elementary school, and only one in 20 girls attend school beyond the sixth grade” (Life as an Afghan woman). Loads of families aren’t provided with option to attend school while others do not allow their women to receive an education because they are afraid their daughter will be punished for anything she does and could be killed on the way to school. Not only can women not get married and go to school without worries, but also they are not allowed to speak out for themselves in public. They have a government that protects them from these groups and makes sure they have the same rights as others. In the Middle East, especially Afghanistan and Pakistan, women are scared to speak too loudly. These women live in fear each day of their lives because if they make one small mistake it could mean their life. Yet, there are some people who are fighting for women’s rights, especially women’s education. Malala Yousafzai is a girl who fought for women’s education. At the age of eleven, Malala began writing a blog for BBC Urdu. The blog described how she was upset that women’s education under the Taliban would be forced to stop. Malala also appeared on national television talking about women’s education. She has become a symbol of resistance against the Taliban. Even after Malala was put on the Taliban’s hit list, she continues to speak out about what she felt needed to be said. Malala would give her life for this cause, and she almost did. On October 9, 2012, Malala was on her way home from her morning classes when a man walked on to her bus and asked, “Who is Malala”. When she said it was her he shot her. The bullets hit her head and her leg. The Taliban ordered for her to be shot because she was promoting western culture in Pashtun areas. In another case Mukhtar Mai stood up for women’s rights and was sexually assaulted by multiple men with orders from the tribal council. The tradition in Mukhtar’s tribe was that a woman who is sexually assaulted by multiple men should kill herself, but instead of committing suicide she fought for her cause (Samira 28-30). Here in America there is little tangible evidence of the war in Afghanistan, no visible scars besides the ones involving processions of caskets coming from Dover Air Force Base in Delaware. The mentality though remains. People are tired of this war; they have lost the patriotic spirit that had been created after 9/11. With the war reaching a decade people are losing hope and faith in the government. They are losing the desire to continue in their support for the war. People have taken negative viewings to Muslims as well because of this war and have become very aggressive over those coming from the Middle East and of Islamic origins even if they have been citizens of the United States before 9/11. “We kid ourselves if we think we can be a people at war for a decade without suffering consequences” states James Carron (Hampson).

In 1996 the Taliban took over Afghanistan and immediately imposed their fundamentalist ideals on the citizens. They effectively did this by oppressive tactics maintaining control on their people. The Taliban, lead by spiritual leader Mohammed Omar, has used many different ways to oppress the nation of Afghanistan. One way they did was was by destroying ancient art structures that have became a huge part of their culture. These acts had a great effect on the people in Afghanistan stripped them of a very sacred symbol in their eyes. The Taliban oppression has left citizens scared and powerless.
