Edmond Dantes has been changed throughout the novel due to many things. His once carefree naive self was changed by nearly fifteen years in prison. While in prison he plans his revenge against the people that caused him to be wrongly imprisoned. After his escape and his finding of the treasure on Monte Cristo, he soon becomes the Count of Monte Cristo to disguise his true identity while going through with his plans as well as many other guises. This many masked man than uses his many guises to slowly destroy the very lives all those who aided in the destruction of his own life.
Before Dantes was ever locked into a dank and dark cell he was a carefree and naive young man. His life was looking great. He was a soon to be husband and had a great
chance at promotion. He lovingly cared for his aged father and made everyone around him cheery. Except not everyone around him was cheery. Danglars hated him. This raw emotion got the better of him and he accused Dantes of Bonapartism. Soon After, Dantes finds himself arrested and eventually imprisoned in the Chateau d’If. Dantes’ character begins changing. He becomes suicidal and loses all hope. Over the nearly fifteen years in which he was imprisoned, Dantes realized who caused his life to fall apart. At that point he swore vengeance and soon escaped by sewing himself in the body bag that was to carry the body of his friend Abbe Faria. After retrieving the treasure that Abbe Faria deemed rightfully his, Dantes became the Count of Monte Cristo and set off on his mission of vengeance. Using his untold riches, he put on different masks and became different people to change the lives of the people that betrayed him. What truly changed Dantes wasn’t just his time in prison. Sure being in prison does definitely change people, but it’s more than that. The realization that his friends betrayed him, the death of Abbe Faria in the prison made him much more morose and to himself, the near-death experiences that he experience whilst escaping also aided in making him morose, as well as the need for vengeance. All of these factors greatly influenced the creation of the Count of Monte Cristo, his main guise. The reason why he is changed by the many factors is that having your entire life changed because of the people you thought you knew and trusted is pretty rattling. Major life changes have a massive effect on the mind and often do change how a person thinks and feels. So having your happy carefree life utterly changed by people that you thought were friends would deeply effect Dantes to the point in which he is now. He has want for the misfortune of his betrayers and escapes prison to cause them through the wealth he acquires. As you have seen, Dantes has changed drastically. The evolution from carefree youth to wealthy, mysterious count, Dantes has seen and experienced things many would never imagine. Warping the lives of all who betrayed him while his traitors believe in his death. Through his many ‘adventures’, if you would, he has become a feared and mysterious man. THe changes in Dante's’ personality definitely leaves us a sign. Beware those that you stab in the back, for they may rise again and stab you back.

In Dante’s Inferno, the relationship between Dante the Pilgrim and Virgil the Guide is an ever-evolving one. By analyzing the transformation of this relationship as the two sojourn through the circles of hell, one is able to learn more about the mindset of Dante the Poet. At the outset, Dante is clearly subservient to Virgil, whom he holds in high esteem for his literary genius. However, as the work progresses, Virgil facilitates Dante’s spiritual enlightenment, so that by the end, Dante has ascended to Virgil’s spiritual level and has in many respects surpassed him. When Dante and Virgil reach the gate of Hell, Dante is overcome with fear upon reading the inscription above the gate and hearing the screams and lamentations of those inside. An amazing transformation takes place in Edmond Dantes as he learns about his enemies and a large hidden treasure that contains a large sum of money. Abbe Faria is a very smart man, while in prison he taught Dantes many useful knowledge including the whereabouts of a large treasure located on the Isle of Monte Cristo.

Descending from the first to the second level of Hell, Dante witnesses the transition to greater agony and greater punishment for the damned. Overwhelmed by the sinner’s harrowing cries and the extensive list of seemingly innocent souls given to him by Virgil, Dante beckons for two lovers to approach him, desperate for some sense of comfort. The souls are known to be the historical figures Francesca de Rimini and her lover Paolo, forever trapped in the circle of lust due to their sinful adultery. Through her words spoken to Dante, Francesca shows how she feels she has been unjustly punished and is deserving of others’ sorrow, and Dante, despite his awareness that she is a sinner, pities her. A close reading of this passage is necessary to better understand Dante’s internal battle with showing compassion where it is not deserved and Francesca’s incessant denial of her sins.

However, through the admonishments of Virgil, it becomes apparent that there exist two distinct ways of perceiving: practical, active observation and unreceptive, disadvantageous perception. It is through practical and active observation that Dante comprehends the lessons of his journey. Unreceptive perception fails to provide valuable information for Dante to use during his life on Earth.
