Economic Imperialism: Direct and Indirect Control

During the 19th century to the early 20th century all of Europe was taking land left and right. They weren’t taking full control of the land either they were doing it through six distinct forms of imperialism, Colony, Protectorate, Sphere of Influence, Economic Imperialism. Direct Control, Indirect Control. These six forms of imperialism led Europe to completely dominate the world for over century.
One of the first continents to suffer from imperialism was Africa. Britain, had set roots on the continent by 1815 in South Africa (Goucher). They started in South Africa because it was a great place for a port city on the trade route to India. This was until they discovered that there were precious gems and metals there. After that discovery they began to want more and more to do with South Africa. The Boers who were of Dutch decent weren’t happy with the way the British were industrializing their country and eventually rebelled in and fought the Empire in the Boer war which lasted from 1899 to 1902. It ended with a British victory and generous terms of peace.
They continued to dominate Africa throughout the rest of the 1800’s and started moving up from the tip of Africa. The British Empire had already been well known and appreciated there due to their efforts in completely wiping out the slavery and the slave trade in Africa (National). This led the people of West Africa to feel comfortable with the British and would supply them with goods and gold. The British were receiving taxes from the chieftains of the West African tribes. The continued to move northward still and ended up in Egypt because, the recently built Suez Canal was at risk of being destroyed due to Egyptian nationalists.
