Economic growth is a necessary but not sufficient condition of
economic development.
There is no single definition that encompasses all the aspects of
economic development. The most comprehensive definition perhaps of
economic development is the one given by Todaro:
‘Development is not purely an economic phenomenon but rather a multi –
dimensional process involving reorganization and re orientation of the
entire economic and social system.
Development is a process of improving the quality of all human lives
with three equally important aspects. These are:
1. Raising peoples’ living levels, i.e. incomes and consumption,
levels of food, medical services, education through relevant
growth processes.
2. Creating conditions conducive to the growth of peoples’ self
esteem through the establishment of social, political and economic
systems and institutions which promote human dignity and respect.
3. Increasing peoples’ freedom to choose by enlarging the range of
their choice variables.’
Economic growth may be defined as an increase in a country's ability
to produce goods and services. Economic growth merely refers to an
increase in the real Gross Domestic Product, or GDP per capita over a
period of time.
It is natural to be misled by the idea that economic growth is the key
to economic development and perhaps a condition of development itself,
but development is more than simply increasing economic output i.e.
GDP per capita. It is a wider concept than economic growth. A
country's economy may experience real growth of GDP with no economic
development taking place. Nevertheless, wider more meaningful
indicators of development are often correlated with GDP per capita,
such as The ...

Thus it is evident that economic development does not always lead to
an improvement in living standards, due to its limited scope and
inability to impact the non materialistic aspects of human life.

In 1938, Minerva’s father permitted her to go away to boarding school along with her two older sisters, Patria and Dedé. Alvarez’s writing on behalf of Minerva speaks volumes as to the point of view Minerva had growing up. “And that’s how I got free. I don’t mean just going to sleepaway school on a train with a trunkful of new things. I mean in my head after I got to Inmaculada and met Sinita and saw what happened to Lina and realized that I’d left a small cage to go into a bigger one, the size of our whole country,” (Alvarez 13). Minerva’s father, said that out of all his daughters, Minerva should have been born a boy. The other Mirabal sisters said that she was their father’s favorite daughter because Minerva acted the most like a son to him. She almost became the son he had always wanted, but never had. Due to her father’s influence, as Minerva grew up, she aspired to being a lawyer. Something which was unheard of for a woman in the ‘40s.
Over the course of the novel, the Mirabal sisters have shown a strong desire to be in the revolution and free their country from the cruel hands of Trujillo and his regime whilst putting their families in danger. Minerva is the first to give into the revolution as she leaves her children with her sisters and mother while she goes on to try and free the country. “I, who treasured my children more than my own life, couldn’t believe my sister would leave her son for anything…..”(155).Though abandoning her child must be a hard thing to do, Minerva does this, which strongly portrays her dedication to the revolution is stronger than her dedications to her children. They allow their homes to be ‘invaded’ by the revolutionaries; allow their hom...
At one point in time poverty was the general fact of the world. Man was always expected to live on the line of poverty, majority of the economic thinkers couldn’t see the world moving away from this standard but we did and have gained great affluence. As society has grown from this poverty stricken state it once was in, into an affluent one, the ideas used to run it have yet to change in some ways. In The Affluent Society, John Kenneth Galbraith explains how with great economic growth there should be growth in economic ideas as well.
Do you always stand up for what you believe in? Minerva and all of the Mirabal sisters

It was difficult to find out who was the main narrator of In the Time of the Butterflies was, the author kept switching between different viewpoints in order to effectively tell the story of the Mirabel sisters. The Mirabel sisters spoke in firsthand accounts of what happened to them. It seemed
The sister who is the most courageous of them all would be Minerva. She was the one who started the whole riot against Trujillo
Throughout their lives, the Mirabal sisters were bonded. As they grew older, they matured and experienced many more difficult and influential moments together. Everyone has a family, but not every family is the same. In the novel, In the Time of Butterflies, familial roles are used to portray the importance of family despite individual differences.
When the Mirabal sisters were growing up, their father had a whole separate family with children, and he kept it secret from his family. When asked why he had this affair, he replies with “cosa de los hombres”, or “things a man does” (92). This quote shows how infidelity was accepted during that time, and how the women couldn’t do anything about it. It was just naturally accepted. Men cheated, and that was socially okay. Another instances was how Minerva’s husband, Manolo, was already engaged to another woman when he met Minerva. When Minerva finally tells Mate about the man she’s been seeing and how the man is already engaged, Mate calls him a “Two-timer” (123). Immediately afterwards, Minerva defends his behavior, and Mate changes her mind about him. She thinks “I guess she’s right” (123), as if to suddenly realize that infidelity is okay, as long as her sister is benefitting from it. Cheating was so common with men around this time, it was socially acceptable, so when Mate hears about Minerva’s new boyfriend being engaged, it doesn’t take much for her to accept it. Even Minerave doesn’t care whatsoever that her new boyfriend is engaged. She isn’t worried about him cheating on her in the future, because the behavior is so
Minerva Mirabal is seen as one of the most iconic heroines in the early nineteen hundreds. Her character is strong and, still strong today. In the time of the butterflies, by Julia Alvarez, describes all of the Mirabal sisters, and how they changed their country. Minerva is displayed as strong hearted and determined. She is the main influence for her sisters to join the movement. She will stand firm in what she believes in but, she is also a normal person who made a huge difference in her country.

In order for any country to survive in comparison to another developed country they must be able to grow and sustain a healthy and flourishing economy. This paper is designed to give a detailed insight of economic growth and the sectors that influence economic growth. Economic growth in a country is essential to the reduction of poverty, without such reduction; poverty would continue to increase therefore economic growth is inevitable. Through economic growth, it is also an aid in the reduction of the unemployment rate and it also helps to reduce the budget deficit of the government. Economic growth can also encourage better living standards for all it is citizens because with economic growth there are improvements in the public sectors, educational and healthcare facilities. Through economic growth social spending can also be increased without an increase of taxes.
Development is one of the most important factors of human life and one of the abilities which distinguish humans from animals. Over time, humans have realized their power to gain whatever they want from the environment. However, it has not taken too long for people to understand that this trend can end up with a disaster. Over consumption of limited natural resources can cause environmental degradation in an environment that humans are depends on it for living. This essay will look into the concept of economic growth and the effects of economic growth on the environment. Then, by analyzing the current situation, this essay will attempt to answer the question "how and how much can humans reduce environmental degradation?”
The importance of growth and sustainability for the economy comes from the fact that economic growth is fundamental to development and a stable economy, which enhances a nation’s development through the creation of revenue and employment. It is necessary to distinguish between economic growth and development (Hillbom, 2008). Generally economic development cannot be defined so precisely, as it is a multidimensional concept which refers to “changes in living standards and welfare over time”. It also referred to “structural change of economic and social infrastructure in an economy” as UNCTAD (2014) stated that economic development is fundamentally “a process of structural transformation whereby countries innovate and diversify from producing
Economic growth is defined as an increase in the ability of an economy to produce goods and services, comparing different time periods. Traditionally economic growth is measured in terms of gross national product or gross domestic product (GDP). In simplest terms, economic growth refers to an increase in aggregate productivity. Sustainability is the study of how natural systems function, remain diverse and produce everything it needs for the ecology to remain in balance. It also acknowledges that human civilisation takes resources to sustain our modern way of life. Sustainable economic growth means a rate of growth which can be maintained without creating other significant economic problems, especially for future generations . Environmental
