Ecological sustainability is to ensure that by our actions the future generations are still able to sustain the environment and meet their needs. Ecological sustainability refers to the capacity of the biosphere to meet the needs of the present generation, without hindering future generations from being able to meet their needs. http://www.skwirk.com/p-c_s-57_u-500_t-1363_c-5246/qld/sose-geography/environment-and-development-world-environments/exploring-the-issue/what-is-ecological-sustainability-. To measure if the house is sustainable you have to be able to meet a certain criteria. This criterion includes passive design principles, building materials used, energy use, water use and environmental sustainability. The house sustainability is …show more content…
There are a number of strategies that can be used to minimize material waste form the construction process, including the use of standard sized materials and elements, modular design, prefabrication, and the implementation of a waste management plan. Waste reduction during the occupation of the home through recycling should be facilitated by the dwelling design. http://www.yourhome.gov.au/passive-design. There are many building materials that can be used to make a house sustainable these materials include: construction systems, embodied energy, waste minimisation, lightweight framing, brickwork and block work, cladding, concrete slab floors, insulating concrete forms, Autoclaved aerated concrete, Precast concrete, Mud brick, Rammed earth and Green roofs and walls. When my parents moved into my house in 1996 the house was a lot smaller a since then they have made many renovations to improve the house and also accommodate for their family. My parents have added rooms to the house as well as changing the layout of the home. When making these modifications my parent shave used construction systems, embodied energy, waste minimisation, lightweight framing, and brickwork, cladding and concrete slab floors. The main elements such as roofs, walls and floor are combinations of materials and these are often known as the construction systems. At my house there …show more content…
Compact fluorescent lights use one-third the energy of incandescent lights and may last from 6 to 10 times longer. Improvements in energy efficiency are generally achieved by adopting a more efficient technology or production processes or by application of commonly accepted methods to reduce energy losses. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Efficient_energy_use. Currently in my house these lights are being used, however we do not have a skylight. It was considered to put one in but due to the possibility of creating more heat we decided not to go with the skylight.
Lighting in homes consumes 8–15% of the average household electricity budget (or about 6% of its energy use) although the makeup of the installed lighting technologies, lighting design and user behaviour can make a difference. Efficient and well-designed lighting can yield household energy savings. http://yourhome.gov.au/energy/lighting. MY home has many different aspects in place to make it energy efficient however due to the occupant’s usage rates it is no being
The following case study critiques Upton’s vision to establish a sustainable community through implementing comprehensive sustainable strategy. The urban periphery development is thought to demonstrate superior execution of sustainable principles in development (Jackson 2007). As a parallel, the report focuses on the development of Upton’s design code and demonstrates how large -scale mix-use developments can incorporate sustainable practice and principles of urban growth.
While incandescent light bulbs are not as energy efficient when compared to newer alternative halogen light bulbs, compact florescent lamps (CFL), and light emitting diodes (LED), incandescent light bulbs should not be phased out due solely to their inefficiency. Phasing out incandescent light bulbs will not greatly reduce the level of mercury in the environment; additionally incandescent factories are now closed in the United States due to the phase out, many people in the lighting manufacturing industry have lost their jobs. An examination of the CFL, one of the more predominant alternatives to the incandescent, may reveal shortcomings in the CFLs projected life expectancy, overall quality, and potential health hazards. Instead of incandescent light bulbs being phased out for their inefficiency, compact florescent lamps should be banned for their dangerous qualities.
Whether an organization is domestic or international they have social responsibilities to the communities they operate within and to the shielding of the world. Caterpillar, Inc. is one such company that puts social responsibility at the top of their priorities. They have an abundance of engineers and technologists working on solutions to improve on sustainability. According to the 2012 Sustainability Report (2012), “at Caterpillar, we always ask ourselves, ‘What do our customers need? What does the world need?’ World Resources Institute (WRI) asks those same questions about the communities it serves, and truly delivers some amazing results” (p. 19).
In order to understand why Fluorescent and LED light bulbs are a more efficient choice it is important to first understand the basic concept of the tradition or incandescent light bulb. An incandescent light bulb uses a thin tungsten filament contained within a glass container. When an electrical current is run through the filament the filament resists the electrical current. The resistance of the tungsten filament against the electrical current transforms the electrical energy into heat, which makes the filament white hot and in turn makes it glow, producing ...
...also save energy by using motion censoring for doors and sinks. The dining rooms and foyers should have dim-able light switches. Another way to save a lot of energy is to make a master switch at the front door that turns off all lights. That way you never leave a light on when you aren't at home. You should use natural gas cook tops and ovens to cut down on electricity.
Sustainability is one of the most controversial topics throughout the history, and as our society develop, we realize that being able to be sustainable is essential to survival of our race. The book Taking Sides: Clashing Views in Sustainability is a collection of articles on different side of various issues related to sustainability. In the book, Issue 8 discusses the ability of technology to deliver sustainability, and issue 16 and 17 discusses the sustainability of food and energy. While issue 16 and 17 are well-presented, the arguments in issue 8 are not very strong.
For new or retrofit construction, every choice can lead to energy savings; energy that is derived primarily from fossil fuels. The typical household LED replacement for a 60w light lasts about 50,000 hours. Pretending that an incandescent could also last that long, it would consume about 3,000 kilowatt-hours (kWh) of energy whereas the LE...
Since being developed by Bronfenbrenner in 1979 social ecological perspectives have been widely used to formulate practice guidelines and government policies when planning service needs for children, young people and their families. This essay will discuss what a social ecological perspective consists of, what limitations it may incur and how it can assist us in developing best practice and understanding when working with children, young people and families. It will draw on examples from K218 for illustrative purposes.
Sustainability is an issue that everyone should be concerned about. If the planet Earth is going to exist, as we know it, everyone should wake up and do their part to help achieve a greater level of sustainability. In my English 101 class we learned about the issue of sustainability. Many different topics were discussed and researched throughout the course of the semester. Overall, I think that the sustainability project has been a learning and enlightening experience for everyone in this class. Many more things can be done next semester, since the groundwork has been laid to continue this project for time to come.
As we have proven its importance through our earlier studies, globalization is the process of the interaction and integration of people, companies and governments through the sharing of the forces of globalization, which include trade, transportation, media, and communication technology and also through world views, products, ideas and different aspects of other cultures. Sustainable prosperity is the act of being accountable for the safekeeping of the environment and resources for future generations to be able to achieve prosperity and thrive. As quoted from the Great Law of the Iroquois confederacy, “In our every deliberation, we must consider the impact
The sustainable interior design has a different main guideline; before esthetics, there is ethics. It has as main objective the healthy, the beneficial or harmful for the health of the people who live in the homes and to preserve the natural environment that surrounds it.
Sustainability is a concept with a diverse array of meanings and definitions – a widely used glamorous, ambiguous, ambivalent and vague concept that is used by different stakeholder groups in various ways. Presumably to avoid noodling over a terminology or to avoid the confrontation with a definition, most widely the concept is broken down a planning process (c.f. e.g. Döring & Muraca, 2010). That is why most common sustainability is understood as sustainable development.1
• Preventative Maintenance - Your assessment could help identify things that, if they’re not addressed, could lead to big problems down the road. For example, improper insulation could lead to mold or mildew. A home energy assessment can help you stop these problems before they start. • Good for the Environment - A home that wastes less energy uses less energy, which is better for both your pocketbook and the environment. Approximately 16% of all greenhouse gases in the U.S. come from homes.
In class we discussed what sustainable development meant to us; each group had its own definition. Our group’s definition was that sustainable development is for the long term for future generations, for the basic needs such as food, clothing, shelter, and job. The basic will increase over time and our resources will diminish, which why sustainable development is important. Sustainable development is important for future generations so that they end up with a world better than ours. Sustainable development is achievable if society works together to meet everyone’s basic needs and create a better world.
Environmental sustainability is making decisions and taking actions in the interest of protecting the natural world, preserving the capability of the environment to support human life and ensuring that humans use the environment in a way that does not harm the environment. It also questions how economic development affects our environment vice versa.
