Eating meat has been around as a way to survive for millions of years. Eating meat was a way to survive because it is full of protein. Humans have improved in so many ways since then. They now know how to successfully survive and we no longer have to hunt for our next meal we can go right to the super market. The food industry is so big, they are now making food that we shouldn’t be eating. Food high in sugar and bad fats are not good for our bodies. The meat industry is also thriving. The way beef is raised has become inhumane and unhealthy for humans to eat. People should be cutting beef out of their diets because it is harmful to the health of humans, harmful to our environment, and is not an efficient use of our natural resources. There is a compound found in red meat called carnitine. Carnitine is produced by the liver and kidneys, it is what gives us energy (Editor in Chief). Bacteria in the stomach digests the carnitine and turns it into trimethylamine N-oxide. A study was done on mice and revealed that trimethylamine N-oxide may be causing atherosclerosis (Editor in Chief). When people get atherosclerosis it means their arteries are hardening and narrowing which then leads to heart attacks from reduced blood flow (Atherosclerosis). It has been brought to people’s attention that the meat industry has been using “meat glue” also known as transglutaminase. They use it to mold two or more pieces of meat together to make it bigger. Many people feel like they need meat to survive, and that makes them turn a blind eye to the monstrous killings of animals. It is said that we became efficient killers by watching other killers (Scientificamerican.com), but people keep enabling killing past the point where it’s necessary to survive. It’s entirely possible to eat a healthy varied diet without meat, or to buy free range meat locally. The protein and nutrients that most people fear losing when they stop eating meat can be found if foods like tofu, and in supplements. Free range meat is also an option for people who don’t want to fully give up eating meat because the animals aren’t kept in inhumanely tiny spaces before they are butchered. People have more control over the food that they need to eat in order to survive in their environments, so it’s no longer necessary to support the inhumane butchering of animals when there are lots of alternatives that still provide the nutrients that our bodies
In conclusion, eating meat is still unethical, because even with these changes that the cattlemen and ranchers have done over the years, trying to improve the industry, it cannot make up for the damage done. There are animals still suffering and being tortured and more should be done to help them. These are some of the reasons I have for not eating meat; it’s my own personal choice. And I choose to be meat-free.
Being vegetarian opens up so many doors for people. For those who do not know what a vegetarian is or are confused on what they do or eat let me inform you that being a vegetarian simply means that you go off of plant-based diets. Although there are several kinds of vegetarian diets, it is all based on what type of food you are consuming. For example, a strict vegetarians or vegans avoid all foods of animal origin, including meat, poultry, fish, diary products, and eggs. But the production of the meat raises questions on whether eating meat is ethical in people’s eyes. Studies in recent years have shown that the growing impact of our meat eating culture, has negatively affected different aspects around us. The problem is not about whether people should or should not eat meat, but that we should focus on how the production of meat can have negative affects and how we can limit those problems.
Every year, humans kill over 56 billion farm animals, with 3,000 animals dying every second in the slaughterhouse around the world. In the United States, there are about 12.7 million people being diagnosed with cancer; eating red meats might be linked. Many people don’t believe think anything of what they eat or how it got there. But the harsh truth is the meat that you eat was once a living, breathing creature that had feeling and emotions. Maybe next time you order a steak or chicken nuggets you should think about the animals that went through extreme pain and conditions for you to eat. Eating meat isn’t all bad, it actually brings a good source of protein to one’s diet, in a moderate amount.
