Moreover, an early childhood teacher is a person who educates young children and plays an important role in their social and intellectual development. The curriculum of early childhood education aims to provide children with a holistic development. Furthermore, the curriculum states that teachers are sources of information and authority while knowledge is absorbed through lectures, worksheets, and texts (Wingra school, 2012). There are circumstances when teachers experience cases where students are naturally motivated which will allow them to learn easily. Teachers face challenges where some of their students are not as eager to learn compared to other students. Hence, they need to use a variety of teaching styles or techniques that will aid in catching the students’ interests. In order for students to be motivated, a teacher needs to exert effort to inspire, challenge and stimulate them in their learning process. There are trends in early childhood education that make student’s learning effective. First is minimizing the achievement gap because each early education center has a diverse group of students such as children from low-income families and foster homes. They may gain sufficient funding from the authorities when children are doing well academically and it will result in closing the achievement gap. Second is technology in the classroom. It is the software and resources that meet the needs of the students and enriches the current material they are learning. Third, classroom principles will be enforced as teachers are encouraged to integrate core principles especially for students at an early age to develop emotional, cognitive, social early learning (Jones, 2017). Teachers need to build a strong relationship with the child so that the child feels comfortable in approaching the teacher regarding any issue. In addition, teachers will have to adjust their teaching styles according to the effectiveness it has on children. Their teaching styles will reflect on which is the best method in engaging students and increasing their academic performance. Furthermore, teachers have their best interests for the students as they want them to enjoy the learning process at the same time have an orderly classroom environment. A recommended method of teaching is incorporating play in the lesson being taught. Teachers ought to think of new ways in order to engage students in learning. Play is an essential part of a child's developmental process; therefore, teachers have to encourage children to play rather than restricting them. The goal of the teacher is to engage a student and make them learn through piquing their curiosity and imagination. In terms of the process of teaching, teachers will have to shift to the new way of teaching students which is progressive education. Progressive education is more of a holistic approach and it is teaching children how to think rather than what to think. Early childhood education, although constantly evolving, was actually established and practiced as early on as the times of Ancient Greece and Rome. The foundation that early childhood education is based upon is to instill in children the skills needed to succeed later on in life, while making sure young children enjoy their time in schooling. Throughout chapter 3 in the textbook Who Am I in the Lives of Children, the reader is capable of evaluating just how greatly the methods for teaching today’s youth have evolved and changed for the better.
From the perspective I have at this stage in my journey in the early childhood education field, I would like to share what I have come to value and believe in regards to early learning and care by looking at my philosophy statement. To begin we will look at the statement and highlight three key features and find out why they are important to me, then we will see what they will look like in my practice, and lastly we will examine these ideas closely by looking at where they originated. Educators have to consider how to implement curriculum, instruction, management, and technology in the classroom. Educators also have to provide an environment where all children feel safe and nurtured.
