1. If e-cigs become nationally advertised it is inevitable that more of the general public, especially youths, will become aware of their existence. This in turn will cause a rise in e-cig usage amongst children and teens. Youth are highly receptive to promotional messages at such an impressionable age and may even unconsciously process and remember them. This is evident in a study done by the Journal of Marketing that states that in comparison to adults, adolescents are three times as sensitive to cigarette advertising and are twice as likely to recall advertisements they have seen. Although e-cigs market themselves as a different product than cigarettes, they are both still harmful to the body and contain nicotine, a very addictive substance. Contrary to what some think, many experts believe that exposure to tobacco advertising can have greater influence over youth than family and peers, causing children and teens to take up smoking or e-cigs at a young age. …show more content…

Opinions remain divided amongst the health community and general public on whether e-cig advertising is ethical. Because the e-cig is such a new device, its effects on long term health remain unclear and few restrictions exist in regard to how it is advertised. While many view e-cig advertising as ethical because it will likely convert cigarette smokers to a healthier alternative, others believe advertisements and celebrity endorsements will encourage kids and teens to begin smoking.3
3. The use of youth culture when advertising e-cigs will cause many children and teens to believe that smoking e-cigs is “cool”. As mentioned above, many companies want to use celebrities as the face of their companies.3 A child places heavy weight on the opinions of their favorite athlete or rock star. If they see them smoking an e-cig then it is likely that they will follow in their image and begin vaping.
