Introduction On the surface, this story is about a man struggling to cope with the loss of his child and subsequent dissolution of his marriage. While the same remains, it is about so much more - family, loss and grieving, mental health, systems, and dysfunctional patterns. The Accidental Tourist, by Anne Tyler, was published in 1985 and won the National Book Critics Circle Award for Fiction in 1985. Summary The novel tells the story of Macon Leary, a travel writer, and his wife, Susan, who have recently lost their son, Ethan, in a shooting at the Burger Bonanza. While the reader may assume this is where the turmoil beginnings, the rest of the novel will come as a shock. Ironically, Macon does not like to travel and it quite cynical about it. Nevertheless, he writes guidebooks about how to travel as if one never left their home. With the couple seemingly grieving alone, Macon unable to comfort his wife or mourn in the same way that she is, Susan voices that she wants a divorce and moves into an apartment, leaving Macon at their home alone. He decides it is the ideal time “to reorganize” the home. He has to travel to England and due to the inability to travel with his dog, Edward, he places the dog in a boarding facility. Upon reading the premise of this novel, I knew I had to read it. People often say that death can bring a family together; and in my family, it did. Nevertheless, death and grief can also bring about entropy within a family or relationships, as is seen here in The Accidental Tourist by Anne Tyler. I tend to cry more often than not, this novel was without exception. I am moved by the story and how quickly I was attached to the each of the characters. Due to situational irony, I felt sympathetic towards the characters; at other times, I saw perfect examples of how family therapy would be a great intervention to the dysfunctional system that was
I always looked at death as such a sad thing that is eventually going to occur to everyone. However, after reading this book, it made me realize death can actually be a beautiful thing. Death allows a person to go to a next life, one where they will be loved and others will be there for them. It was interesting to be able to read about stories that these hospice care workers witnessed themselves. I have experienced a few deaths within my life and I never coped with them very well. After reading this book, I honestly believe I will be able to look at the positive side of death and be able to deal with my emotions better. I can also help others surrounding me deal with a death that they are experiencing. This book was filled with information that I loved learning. For example, I never knew that a dying person can choose a time to die. The thought of this never occurred to me before. I always thought that when it was someone’s time to go, they had no choice. But, a dying person can “put off” passing on until they see a certain person or event that has great significance in their life. Nevertheless, there are still people who will wait to die until they’re all alone in the room. This book makes you think of real life situations and think what you would do in them. Taken as a whole, it was a very in depth book that changes the way you would naturally perceive

In Edith Wharton’s framed novel, Ethan Frome, the main protagonist encounters “lost opportunity, failed romance, and disappointed dreams” with a regretful ending (Lilburn 1). Ethan Frome lives in the isolated fictional town of Starkfield, Massachusetts with his irritable spouse, Zenobia Frome. Ever since marriage, Zenobia, also referred to as Zeena, revolves around her illness. Furthermore, she is prone to silence, rage, and querulously shouting. Ethan has dreams of leaving Starkfield and selling his plantation, however he views caring for his wife as a duty and main priority. One day, Zeena’s cousin, Mattie Silver, comes to assist the Frome’s with their daily tasks. Immediately, Mattie’s attractive and youthful energy resuscitates Ethan’s outlook on life. She brings a light to Starkfield and instantaneously steals Ethan’s heart; although, Ethan’s quiet demeanor and lack of expression causing his affection to be surreptitious. As Zeena’s health worsens, she becomes fearful and wishes to seek advice from a doctor in a town called Bettsbridge giving Ethan and Mattie privacy for one night. Unfortunately, the night turns out to be a disastrous and uncomfortable evening. Neither Ethan nor Mattie speaks a word regarding their love for one another. Additionally, during their dinner, the pet cat leaps on the table and sends a pickle dish straight to the floor crashing into pieces. To make matters worse, the pickle dish is a favored wedding gift that is cherished by Zeena. Later, Zeena discovers it is broken and it sends her anger over the edge. This book teaches the importance of self-expression and independence. If we did not have these necessities, then life would be like those in this novel. Empty, redundant, and fearful of what is going on. The quotes above show how different life can be without our basic freedoms. This novel was very interesting and it shows, no matter how dismal a situation is, there is always a way out if you never give up, even if you have to do it alone.
Grief played a large role in the lives of the Boatwright sisters and Lily Owens. They each encountered death, injustice, and sadness. Grief impacted and left an imprint on each of them. Grief proved fatal for May. August knew that grief was just another aspect of life; that it had to be accepted and then left in the past. June and Lily learned to not let grief rule their lives. Almost relieved, “we shed our house, the neighborhood, the city, and…our country” (378). On the road, she is no longer forced to hide from the friendly phone calls or household chores. The narrator has been freed on the highway to Ontario, Canada. The Prisoner of War, held under siege in her own home, is liberated to be “hopeful and lighthearted” (378). This trip becomes a break from the life that she’s is currently leading, a life which society thinks should make her content. With this new bit of freedom the narrator is able to form an identity for herself.
The book begins as a mystery novel with a goal of finding the killer of the neighbor's dog, Wellington. The mystery of the dog is solved mid-way through the book, and the story shifts towards the Boone family. We learn through a series of events that Christopher has been lied to the past two years of his life. Christopher's father told him that his mother had died in the hospital. In reality she moved to London to start a new life because she was unable to handle her demanding child. With this discovery, Christopher's world of absolutes is turned upside-down and his faith in his father is destroyed. They both loved traveling but had to stop since he was so sick. “The Journey,” tells a similar story to Wharton 's by showing a woman care for her ill husband. The story starts with a woman and her husband sitting in a train car. The woman is looks outside and beings to reflect on the times with her husband. She remembers when the doctor first diagnosed him with depression. The doctor said “Six weeks of mild air will set him right” (The Greater Inclination 67) so they moved to Colorado. Now they are on a train back from Colorado to New York. Her husband’s condition has worsened since they first arrived in Colorado. The husband is visually ill and there is nothing that the women can do to assist him. As they travel passengers ask if he is ok and if the wife needs help caring for him. She refuses and says she can do it by herself. As they near New York, the husband becomes severely ill and the wife sees the husband has finally died. She became sick to her stomach thinking that she will be at the train station with her dead husband 's body. “Feeling dizzy, she sank down on the edge of the berth, keeping away from his outstretched body, and pulling the curtains close, so that he and she were shut into a kind of sepulchral twilight” (The Greater Inclination 70). The characters in Alice Sebold’s The Lovely Bones are faced with the difficult task of overcoming the loss of Susie, their daughter and sister. Jack, Abigail, Buckley, and Lindsey each deal with the loss differently. However, it is Susie who has the most difficulty accepting the loss of her own life. Several psychologists separate the grieving process into two main categories: intuitive and instrumental grievers. Intuitive grievers communicate their emotional distress and “experience, express, and adapt to grief on a very affective level” (Doka, par. 27). Instrumental grievers focus their attention towards an activity, whether it is into work or into a hobby, usually relating to the loss (Doka par. 28). Although each character deals with their grief differently, there is one common denominator: the reaction of one affects all.
Once her husband, John, realizes the deepness of depression that his wife is in due to her birth of their child he decides to take action. He decides to isolate his wife from the world for her own betterment. Once arriving in her newfound place of isolation where there is no stimulation, except for her journal, the narrator is placed within a room that is lined with yellow wallpaper. This yellow room is meant to free her from any stresses, but her dislike for the wallpaper concerns her. The pattern of yellow begins to become more of an obsession, being this is her only stimulation due to her confinement. She begins to visualize a woman behind her yellow wallpaper, this woman she sees seems to be trapped pacing behind the paper as if she is trying to free herself. It is not long before the narrator begins with withdrawal pieces of this wallpaper from the wall in attempt to free this trapped woman. As the novel ends the woman who once was in such disgusted with this yellow room now traps herself, locking herself away from
