In October of 1993, R.D.S., a Nova Scotian Black youth, was arrested by a white police officer and charged with assault on a police officer in the execution of duty, assault with intent to prevent the lawful arrest of another, and resisting his own arrest. In a Nova Scotia Youth Court, R.D.S. testified that he did not touch the police officer or assault him in any way. He stated that he spoke only to his cousin, who was being arrested by Constable Steinburg, to ask the nature of his arrest and whether or not to contact his mother. R.D.S. testified that Constable Steinburg told him to either "shut up" or face arrest. The youth argued that the police officer proceeded to place both himself and his cousin in a choke hold. Constable Steinburg maintained that R.D.S. assaulted him and obstructed his cousin's arrest. He made no reference to telling the youth to shut up or to placing either youth in a choke hold. (1)
down, but this mentality is detrimental to his happiness and he ends up frustrated by the position he is in. Greg seems genuinely surprised that anyone supports him when he asks “You like me the way I am?” The fact that Greg does not think that it would be possible that someone likes him as he is shows that he’s not used to receiving the support of his family. The animosity within his family keeps Greg from totally believing in himself, and he hesitates to share his achievements with them, which creates a rift between
Alvin was physically and verbally abused by the police officer. When Alvin asked the police officer why they stopped him, police officers replied that they stopped him because he looked suspicious with his hoodie on and they asked him why he was walking outside with his empty bag, Alvin tried to explain that he was wearing hoodie because it was cold outside and he was going at home, but police officer did not listen to Alvin, they physically and verbally harassed Alvin. According to the information it shows that, police officers are using their powers on people, this proves that most of the police officers are violating the law, especially when it comes to the person with no gun and no reason to stop them. Like the story of 48 years old man Dan Richardson, who lives in Brownsville, Brooklyn, he was stopped by police officers, because he walked out rom the store with cop of water and police officers thought that he had Alcohol in his cup, one of the officers sniff the cup to check if it was a real water. This type of stories happens a lot of time; this is another type of prof that police violate the people’s right. Many people said that they are scared of going outside, because police is always up there to stop and frisked them; people became indigent
While the police officers have rights to investigate suspect, the duty of care of the officers to suspect exist and the officers were under a legal obligation to exercise care for Mr. Hill. ...
Buddhists strongly disagree with the use of euthanasia. It is said that Buddha condemned any form of self-mortification. They believe that you should accept your suffering, as it is apart of life.
The role of criminal justice professionals is to preserve and uphold the Constitution by enforcing laws, protecting citizen’s rights and promoting justice for all. Police officers in the field of duty must be able to discern situations to be able to act in the most appropriate manner as it relates to their job. In this case study, Officer Smith is threatened with being penalized for making a decision he thinks is good community policing, but his Lieutenant feels he violated protocol. Officer Smith responds to a domestic dispute between an intoxicated husband and wife. Normal procedure would be to arrest the husband and put him in jail until the decision is made whether or not to press charges. Instead, Officer Smith decides to intervene and asks the couple questions about if they love each other, and why they are physically assaulting each other. They respond they do love each other, but the alcohol makes them violent towards one another. Officer Smith then recommends counseling for the couple, as an alternative to putting the husband in jail. The couple agrees to
It is a very unfortunate fact of life that many people suffer from the scourge of cancer each year. When a family member is diagnosed with cancer, especially when it is incurable, it is painfully difficult for the family and the person who is being diagnosed to cope with the idea. However, it is extremely imperative that they do not lose hope. It is important for them to have courage and to keep fighting because if they give up then they will surely perish. Even when the situation looks bleak, they need to look at the positives and live life as normally as possible, taking in memories and making new ones. If they give up they will not survive. There are many examples of courageous acts in literature. In a very well known novel
Alex Wubbels, a nurse in Salt Lake City, Utah was wrongfully arrested by a police officer because she refused to draw blood. Wobbles was following hospital protocol and was following the correct guidelines for her job. In the Alex Wubbels video Wubbel refused to draw blood from a patient who was unconscious. The officer wanted his blood drawn because he thought the patient was under the influence of alcohol and may have been the cause of the accident. When Wubbel refused the police officer preceeded to handcuff her because she was succeeding to comply with the police officers. The officer was angry and wanted Wubble to do what he said. When she did what was best for the patient and what she was supposed to do according to law the police officer detained her. The officer obviously did not have a comprehension of
Almost all of us have heard of a scenario such as this one: A woman battling cancer has lost almost all hope of recovery. She has not been able to turn to her family for support for fear of their reactions to her illness. One morning she finally breaks down and tells her husband about the cancer. Instead of being devastated and turning his back on his wife, the husband supports the wife, every step of the way, and she gradually seems to improve.
Catherine Genovese, a twenty-eight year-old who was on her way home in her build-up neighborhood in a late night shift as a bar manager. She was a manager in Queens, New York, but that night she was suddenly attacked by a man named Winston Moseley with a knife. Catherine was screaming and pleading for help that she got stabbed, but nobody comes to help her even though they heard her yelling for help. People not just didn't try to help, but didn´t even refuse to help her call the police. They didn't want to help or call the police because they didn't want to be involved in it. Murderer Moseley saw lights coming nearby and knew people were watching him , so he escaped and left Catherine there injured. Catherine was dragging herself towards a doorway bleeding, she could survive at this point, but later Moseley the attacker came back and started doing the same thing that he was doing to Catherine because he said in the court that nobody wants to help her or try to stop him for attacking. As badly
On July 17, 2014, Eric Garner was seen in Staten Island selling loose cigarettes in the streets. Police officers over intensified the situation when in attempt to arrest Garner, they placed him in a chokehold. “Police escalated the situation as they were more accustomed to kicking ass than to deescalating conflict, and force was used, as it is disproportionately against blacks(Passsavant 335)”. The officers in this case had a different ways they could have handled the case more appropriately. For example, they could have frisked the suspect to immediately ensure that he was unarmed to further handle the situation more appropriately. As Garner was in a chokehold, he whispered “I can’t breathe…”, the three last words he uttered before his sudden death. This case presents clearly exemplifies officers using too much force in cases where it is not
There are many debates whether the police make right choices in certain dangerous situations or whether the police have too much power. The best solution for any person, who happened to be a suspect for a police, is to comply to the police and surrender to avoid any bad outcomes. Later, with lawyers in the police station every issue will resolve and if a suspect is innocent, police will let him or her go. All this will prevent any tragic consequences. The society has to remember that not complying to the police when they tell you so, will cause many troubles. Police officers are trained to follow certain rules but in situations where a police officer has to make a very quick decision about what to do, how to stop something/someone dangerous, there is no time for the police officer to think about right steps and consequences.
One fateful day at the end of June in 1998 when I was spending some time at home; my mother came to me with the bad news: my parent's best friend, Tommy, had been diagnosed with brain cancer. He had been sick for some time and we all had anxiously been awaiting a prognosis. But none of us were ready for the bumpy roads that lay ahead: testing, surgery, chemotherapy, nausea, headaches, and fatigue. Even loud music would induce vomiting. He just felt all around lousy.
