Drones: The Effect They Pose on Our Privacy As the 21st century progresses, technology innovates at a high pace. Recently a new form of technology has been spread from the hands of the military and movie making to the hands of the average consumer, and that technology is drones. Drones are capable of many things as described by the American Civil Liberties Union, “deployed without proper regulation, drones equipped with facial recognition software (software that can identify a person by matching facial features with other documented images), infrared technology (technology that forms an image based on the heat signature of the human body, and other heat expelling objects), and speakers capable of monitoring personal conversations would cause …show more content…

There are many reasons why our privacy risk can increase but on of the main reasons that people have been focusing on recently is drones. To some drones are just toy helicopters with cameras on them, but to some people they are much more than that. The first drone that was widely used by the U.S. Air Force was the MQ-1, or as we better know it as the Predator. The United States air force developed this drone in the early 1990’s and flew it on July 3rd 1994. Wired Magazine did an awesome job explaining how drones are changing the movie industry with their article “Drones are About to Change how Directors Make Movies”. In this article they explain a project that CorridorDigital worked on called Superman With a GoPro. This project consisted of replicating the famous scene from Man of Steel where superman is flying in the air between buildings at crazy fast speed. To shoot this short video they used a drone with a camera mounted on it and used video editing software to add arms to the video so it looked like we are seeing the world from Superman’s point of view. Drones were able to give them the shot they wanted while saving money on renting a helicopter to carry the camera. My main purpose for adding this section is to portray the different uses of drones. Consumer drones were not made to be used as weapons or other devices such as spying devices. As we see the progression and advancements in technology within new drones, we can see that the main purpose of a consumer drone is to give the ability to independent filmmakers and ordinary people to explore filming, and provide a relatively affordable tool to get a shot that you use to be able to achieve with a helicopter, but this technology also poses a threat. With better cameras that are capable of a clearer picture and farther
