In the book called, The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson the theme of good versus evil is explored throughout the story. In most stories good triumphs over evil and everything ends out similar to a fairy tale ending, but in this story a person could say that Dr. Jekyll, the good in the story, loses to Mr. Hyde, the evil in the story. While this is a valid argument the good in the story may die, but it takes the evil with it showing that sometimes the ultimate sacrifice has to be made in order to beat the evil in our lives. To begin, Dr. Jekyll describes, “I compounded the elements, watched them boil and smoke together in the glass, and when the ebullition had subsided , with a strong flow of courage, drank off the potion” (45). Jekyll is using the cover of Mr. Hyde to do evil things for pleasure. He is using this evil side of himself and therefore making him stronger. Later in the story Jekyll explains why this is a bad thing. He states, “Instantly the spirit of hell awoke in me and raged” (49). This shows the reader that the evil within Jekyll is becoming stronger, just later in the story Jekyll describes, “I was stepping leisurely across the court after breakfast, drinking the chill of the air with pleasure, when I was seized again with those indescribable sensations that heralded the change” (52). This scene is when Jekyll loses control of Hyde and Hyde starts to come at intervals of time that, throughout the story, get more and more often. In the end, Jekyll is forced to sacrifice himself to prevent himself from becoming Hyde and to protect the world from the evil that is Mr. Hyde. The author wrote, “Here, then , as I lay down the pen, and proceed to sal up my confession I bring the life of that unhappy Henry Jekyll to an end” (54).
