Although the problem of low self-esteem has many solutions but the dove self-esteem fund has proven to be quite successful due to the following criteria; Function feasibility, operational feasibility and socio-cultural feasibility. In order to apply solution we have to understand how it functions. Functional Feasibility is the project's ability to address the causes of the problem and to reduce or eliminate the effects. It shows how effective the solution is. As I mentioned before the causes for low self-esteem are so many but the most common are being the odd one out, at home or at school, belonging to a family or social group that other people are prejudiced towards, Absence of praise, warmth, affection or interest in addition to that failing to meet parents standards or being the receiving end of other people's stress or distress which causes the person to be negative and gloomy most of the time. Social/cultural considerations are all about the cultural acceptance, conformity with traditions and the social impact .As for the cultural acceptance this project will increase the awareness of the importance of self-confidence. Our society is entirely based on looks and how “the perfect women should be”. To be pretty you are expected to have the perfect body with the perfect face and hair. You could never cut your hair short because you would be considered a dyke. If you’re makeup isn’t perfect you are considered ugly and if you don’t have the “hourglass figure” you are considered fat and overweight. “Despite higher global self-esteem, women do not feel good about their appearance. This campaign may have a reverse effect on these types of women. By hearing the responses from the women, they may feel that being confident is not something that is considered normal. This would be a constraint that this campaign and specific short-film could give. Another constraint would be men. Although Dove is a company that aims towards women, there are men that struggle with the same self-esteem problems that could also benefit from this same mission. By letting know that not only women, but also humans as a whole, should believe they are beautiful could change the impact of the message. The last thing that could pose a problem is the fact that the reveal, one picture is supposed to represent unattractiveness and one is representing beauty. You hear comments from the women mentioning crow’s feet or circles under their eyes weren’t in the second picture. So do these tiny things change the definition of beauty? Is the youthful looking picture supposed to be the only way to achieve this? With the determination on self- esteem trajectory from adolescence to old age, self- esteem stability, and the relationship between levels of self-esteem and predictions of success and failure, one can conclude that self- esteem influences life outcomes; moreover, people can participate to involvements focused at positively influencing the development of self- esteem.
I was flipping through some channels on the television set one day and came across a woman's talk show, "The View." It caught my attention when one of the hostesses asked the audience of mostly women to raise their hand if they thought they were truly beautiful. Much to my surprise the audience did not respond with very many show of hands. The hostess then introduced a study done by Dove, the makers of the body soap. Dove polled over 6,000 women from all over the country and only two percent of the women polled said they feel beautiful. Women are surrounded by images screaming physical beauty is more important than their talents and accomplishments. Women are deriving their self worth from an ideal of how they think they should look and how they think everyone else wants them to look instead of focusing on their sense of who they are, what they know, and where they are going in life. In society, it is not uncommon to find females who lack confidence in the their beauty, to be honest I sometimes do not feel beautiful. When I look to role models in my life I only see my mother, growing I never had a celebrity or famous figures that I could look up to. Until recently when Lupita Nyong’o made her debut there was not a celebrity I could really relate to. My mother always tried to impart confidence into me growing up, however to this day I continue to struggle with this issue. I have read many books and online blogs on loving yourself, however on certain days I do not feel my best. Dove is reaching out to females like me who encounter this everyday struggle, who will one day hopefully have daughters who also might suffer from lack self-confidence. I have witnessed first hand the effects of not feeling beautiful enough. Since kindergarten, I have seen young girls striving for attention from others, such as men, just in other to feel good enough. I have seen girls bully other young girls because they didn't feel good enough and wanted to put others down. This situation was extremely heartbreaking, the effects can lead to eating disorders, plastic surgery, self harm, and depression. In this situation women look to fulfill this dissatisfaction by looking for fulfillment in other areas which can lead to an even darker road. When women lack self confidence in their beauty it can lead to lack of self respect and even self love. Dove really wants to empower young girls so that they can in turn empower other young girls to find validation in themselves one day. From the beginning of time women have been looked down upon starting with Adam and Eve. In middle childhood, around the age of 7, children start to develop a self – esteem. The development of self -esteem is important because it determines the way a person views ones-self. The Self- esteem formed in middle childhood changes by the time an individual reaches adulthood. There are many longitudinal studies that have been done on the development of self – esteem. One such article is “Cherish Yourself: Longitudinal Patterns and Conditions of Self- Esteem Change in the Transition to Young Adulthood” the researcher wanted to see the change in self –esteem between secondary school and young adulthood, they also wanted to see if gender played a role in the change of self-esteem, this study is explained in the article. In another study, “Self- Esteem Development From Age 14 to 30 Years: A Longitudinal Study,” the researchers studied self –esteem development between the ages of 14 to 30 with a focus on how demographic variable such as gender and ethnicity, the five personality traits; sense of mastery, risk taking, health and income all played a role in self-esteem.
In this age, media is more pervasive than ever, with people constantly processing some form of entertainment, advertisement or information. In each of these outlets there exists an idealized standard of beauty, statistically shown to effect the consumer’s reflection of themselves. The common portrayal of women’s bodies in the media has shown to have a negative impact on women and girls. As the audience sees these images, an expectation is made of what is normal. This norm does not correspond to the realistic average of the audience. Failing to achieve this isolates the individual, and is particularly psychologically harmful to women. The concept of “beauty” is something that everyone feels, thinks, or wants, in order to fit society’s standards. In today’s society, we are often faced with the unrealistic ideals of what beauty is. Due to society’s constant portraying of unrealistic beauty ideals, this reinforces a negative influence upon women’s idea of beauty, resulting in a negative impact in their confidence, and self-esteem, which leads to others, specifically women to be manipulated by society’s corrupted outlook of what beauty is. To add onto this issue, we are constantly surrounded by sources of this negative influence in our everyday lives, including magazines, television, advertisements, and so on. However, women specifically, are more prone to be victims of this negative effect, thus will have more pressure upon themselves to match society’s idea of “beauty,” which includes unrealistic and sometimes unattainable beauty standards.
