Dorianne Laux's Poem 'Fast Gas'

Dorianne Laux has showed all elements of poetry like the theme, tone, imagery, and even the persona. “Fast Gas” has as theme that consists of talking about love. In this poem, she explains how she falls in love with whoever her future man is. The way that she explains is that she is low-keyed falling in love with whoever will be her future boyfriend. The evidence that proves this is when the author says “In a few weeks, I would fall, for the first time, in love, that man waiting patiently in my future like a red leaf on the sidewalk, the kind of beauty that asks to be noticed (Laux).” So the theme is basically falling in love for the first time, but in the case, something that don’t quite exist yet.
The tone that Laux was directed to was the girl on a typical day. The tone for this poem was the right choice. The author made it seem like the girl was eager to find love for her to find the right man for her, that she desired. The way that the author explains at the beginning what she had on and how she was so ready to pump the gas. Laux explains how the girl in the poem gets splashed by gas that came out of the pump because of the air bubble that was made in the tank. The image of her on the floating grey cloud to find was love was pretty visible. This poem definitely expressed a lot of imagery.
The persona of the poem “Fast Gas”, the author talked through the poem using a girl that expressed her feelings on meeting the right one day. Love is as critical for your mind and body as oxygen (McGrath, 2002). So the main character for this poem is the girl that works and volunteers to pump gas, but is also the type of girl that can get dirty with guys and handle things they know how to handle.
