People can easily be influenced by one another. Many people can affect the thoughts and actions of others either deliberately or unintentionally. In the novel, The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde it is evident that various characters influence one another’s actions and thoughts. The novel demonstrates various occasions of impact by others. Such as Dorian’s influence on Basil Hallward, as well as Lord Henry Wotton’s multiply influence on Dorian Gray, and additionally Dorian Gray’s influence towards Sibyl Vane. Relationships can have the dominance to not only have a control on one another but also to derive a lesson or bring out personality traits of the characters. Throughout the novel, there are many relationships that cause a great impact on one another’s thoughts and actions.
Moreover, in the novel, the character it is clearly apparent that Dorian has a great impact towards Basil. Basil, who at first glance knew that Dorian would have an extreme power on his life wasn’t aware of how influential his impact would have been. Basil explains that seeing Dorian daily takes part of his art to a new level. When the Lord Henry demands that he must meet Dorian, Basil retaliates in fear that he will influence Dorian into his hedonism beliefs. Although Basil didn’t know that Dorian’s presence in his life would greatly impact him, he soon finds himself in a troublesome situation with his art. For instance, Basil expressed that “ an artist should create beautiful things, but should put nothing of his own life into them” (Wilde, 15). Basil clearly has had a great influence by Dorian. ...on Dorian has resulted in him to influence Sibyl’s actions. Once Dorian claimed that he no longer wanted to be with Sibyl, she got on her knees and begged him to not leave her. Regardless of her attempt to make him stay, she failed and later committed suicide by taking drinking prussic acid. Dorian was a strong influence on Sibyl. She loved him and admired him, and as soon as he rejected her, she took made irrational decisions because he had such a strong impact on her.
Just like many people, humans around us influence one another whether we are aware of it or not. In the novel, The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde there are various characters that influence one another’s actions and thoughts. The novel reveals multiply sights of how the characters play a huge impact on one another. The influence they have on one another’s actions and thoughts are prominent.
