2. In some ways, Don Pedro is the most elusive character in the play. He never explains his motivations--for wooing Hero for Claudio, for believing Don John’s lie, even for setting up Beatrice and Benedick. He also seems to have no romantic interest of his own, though, at the end of the play, without a future wife, he is melancholy. Investigate Don Pedro’s character, and explain your interpretation of his actions. Why does he woo Hero for Claudio? Is he joking when he proposes to Beatrice, or is he sincere? Why is he melancholy at the end of the play? Why should Shakespeare create a character like Don Pedro? Cite evidence from the play in your essay to support your claims.
Why Don Pedro?
Don Pedro is the one of the most influential characters in Shakespearean literature. His god-like elusiveness has created a number of romances in the tragic comedy Much Ado About Nothing. Furthermore, there has not been a conspicuous, valid reason for the executions of his schemes—volunteering to seduce Hero into taking Claudio, asking for Beatrice’s hand in holy matrimony, and yet, he remains unwed at the end of the play. The reasons for his melancholy character and his actions is to depict the friendship and consideration he has for both Benedick and Claudio to find a wife that suits both of their characteristics , and also serve a purpose to the storyline of this tragic comedy.

...ssue, he quickly diffuses the situation. “Gentlemen both, we will not wake your patience. My heart is sorry for your daughter’s death, But, on my honor, she was charged with nothing But what was true and very full of proof (page 116).” Don Pedro is the base, the true schemer (which has, mistakenly, been labeled as his bastard brother, Don John) and plotter throughout the entire play.
In conclusion, Don Pedro is one of the most misunderstood characters in Shakespearean plays. His decisiveness in plotting schemes, wooing Hero for Claudio, proposing to Beatrice, and ultimately being responsible for the conjoining of Benedick and Beatrice, has shown his elusiveness throughout the entire play and why Shakespeare has made such a character like Don Pedro.
