Don John vs Don Pedro: Battle of the Brothers - By: Mac Franklin
Don John and Don Pedro are so different it’s surprising they're even brothers. The Book Much Ado about Nothing by William Shakespeare has a wide cast of characters. They all go through the same story while experiencing very different changes, and in some cases are complete opposites to each other. But there are two very different characters that stood out to me, Don Pedro and his brother Don John. Don Pedro is very calm and friendly to just about anyone while Don John is sly and doesn’t care about anyone other than himself. Don John (DJ) is a character foil to Don Pedro because he highlights all the good characteristics of Don Pedro (DP). The specific places in which they are character foils are in their actions, personality, and social status.

DJ is a character foil to DP mostly due to their actions in the play Much Ado About Nothing.
Shakespeare writes on page 171 “...Don John, your brother, incensed me to slander the lady Hero...” This proves that DJ is a foil because he lies to even his brother for his own selfish reasons so he can get what he wants. He loves to ruin other people's days. On page 134 shakespeare wrote “Prince John is this morning secretly stolen away.” This proves that DJ is a foil to DP because he runs away after his plans are complete while DP would have never done anything like this. He would never intentionally do something that mischievous that he needs to run away to escape the law. Heck, he’d never do something that bad to begin with, which leads to the next
point. The next biggest reason as to why DJ is a character foil to DP is their personalities. Shakespeare said on pages 32-33 “Come, come, let us thither. This may prove food to my displeasure...If I can cross him any way, I bless myself every way.” DJ is a character foil to DP because of how he finds happiness in other people’s suffering and displeasure. DP would never try to mess someone's day up just so he can feel happy. The quote on page 105 by William Shakespeare explains “...Therefore know, I have earned of DJ a thousand ducats...Is it possible...villainy should be so dear?...” DJ wants to harm people so badly he pays people in the thousands to do it. He’s rude and does things DP would never do for fun, and would for sure never pay others to do something like this for him, and this continues into the next point. The final reason that they are foils is there social status in the world. Shakespeare’s characters decide to call out DJ on page 124 “...but the Bastard Don John would…” This proves that the characters don’t trust DJ, and in this particular scene trust that DP and Claudio (another character in the story) had no idea that DJ was tricking them. They trust the higher ups and more well respected to be the ones in the right. On pg 124, Shakespeare also has Benedick (another character and Claudio’s best friend) interject with “I wouldn’t put it past the prince and my friend Claudio to do... something like this…” he would trust his friends before anyone else. Friends that are on a much higher social status compared to DJ. No one would ever trust an illegitimately born like DJ over Claudio and DP. In conclusion, Don John is a character foil to Don Pedro through their actions as characters, social status, and personalities. Don John is sly and only cares for himself alone. He likes to trick people and get away with it because it's what he considers fun. Don Pedro is caring and would never try to intentionally hurt anyone without reason. He cares for people and tries to help out his friends with their problems. After all this, it’s clear which brother is the better one because no one would trust a bastard over a respectable human being.
“Likewise, every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit (Matthew 7:17).” If you are truly a Christian, than you would bears good characteristic. Don John is a bastard in his family, so William Shakespeare give him a greedy characteristic. Don John’s greed makes him do many disgusting things, and he almost kill Hero, the wife of Claudio, using his words. Readers could not find any Christian attitude on Don John. Don John in Much Ado About Nothing did not exhibit Christian attitudes because of his revenge, his dishonesty characteristic, and he is a gossip monger.
Hero is resembled by Claudio as a “well-mannered young lady” who is content with her own unchangeable, elegant personality. This quote shows Hero is matron, and consistent of her elegance throughout the book and it is because of her personality that causes Claudio to be drawn to her. Claudio on the other hand, admits to Don Pedro that he is “hasty in (his) emotions”, which resembles his skeptical and uncertain personality when it comes to actually admitting his love for Hero. This evidence supports how Claudio is unsure of himself, and because of Claudio’s doubtful and unsure qualities he is quick to believe Don John when he says Hero has been unfaithful. Nevertheless, Claudio and Hero’s differences in the play it stirs up the plot and conflict, but it is their similarities and strong willed love that draws them together in the
Columbus and de las Casas were both explorers of the new world. They both encountered Native Americans and their treatment of them was both similar and different. Columbus viewed the Native American as subhumans. He did not have much respect for the people of the land and treated them as such. In his letter to Luis de Santangel, Columbus says how he took possession of the native’s highnesses by proclamation. He also discloses how no one fought back which then made native Americans seem weak. He also states how he already took Indians aboard with him.At one instance Columbus had a dispute with Spainards and decided to give up Indians as a peace offering. Which he states in the letter to that tey were not his to give
As the Latin American nations set out to construct a new government and society in the 1800´s, two opposing models aroused regarding which one would best benefit the countries. ¨Civilization vs. Barbarism¨ by Domingo Sarmiento, a recognized Argentinean revolutionary, contrasts Jose Marti´s ¨Our America¨ ideology which critiques U.S. capitalism and focuses on developing a good government based on the needs of the nations and each nation´s autochthony. Contrastingly, Sarmiento, guided by his beliefs in democratic principles, declares his preference towards the European urbanized way of life as the key to progress and stability for the nations. Despite the differences in the models proposed by Marti and Sarmiento for the New Nations to follow,
In James H. Kavanaugh’s argument on the duality of Captain Amasa Delano and Don Benito Cereno, he argues that through their names, and their face-to-face confrontations with each other, Cereno acts as a mirror to Delano, and when Cereno doesn’t play the role of Delano’s mirror in power and security, he views Cereno as a threat to his own power. However, Cereno doesn’t play a good mirror for Delano in the first place. Contrary to James Kavanaugh’s argument, Cereno doesn’t play a mirror to Delano in the first place, as their names aren’t similar and they don’t act similarly, and every thought Delano has on Cereno being an evil “plotting against Delano’s own power,” he nearly immediately discredits the thought as paranoia and silliness.
On October 12, 1492 Christopher Columbus landed on unknown territory, however, in his perspective of Earth he thought he made a new route to Asia. He travels throughout the lands, soon, he discovers new forms of inhabitant plants, as well as, indigenous people that were native to those lands. Years later he soon unravels that it was all unaccustomed terrain. The monarchy of Spain also discovers Columbus’s new discoveries, then, they send more explorers to conquer the lands. In 1520, Hernan Cortes goes with the order from Spanish royalty to go to the newly discovered lands to conquer them, also, help expand the Spanish empire. Overall, Columbus and Cortes both reported the new lands they recently discovered back to Spain, however, their descriptions
Entry 1: Act I. Don Pedro and his men return from the war and visit the house of Leonato and his brother, Antonio. This sudden meeting reunites Beatrice with her archrival, Benedick, and it is here that Claudio and Hero fall in love. React: Is it a In Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing, there are the usual characters that show up in most of Shakespeare’s pieces.
Much Ado About Nothing is a tale of two very different relationships. The relationship between Beatrice, the niece of the Governor of Messina and Benedick, a close friend of the Nobleman Don Pedro and that of a young soldier called Claudio and The Governor’s young and beautiful daughter Hero.
This is brought out by the character foil of Don Pedro and Don John because it is Don John’s deceit that is highlighted by Don Pedro’s honesty that creates this conflict that truly makes this meaning clear. Also, Don Pedro’s honesty could have also solved the situation. If he was immediately honest with Leonato and told him of Don John’s accusation, Leonato could have dug deeper and found out that it was untrue. This brings out even more the ease with which the problem could have been avoided. Without this character foil, the meaning would not be as clear as it was.
Whedon's production of Much Ado About Nothing is a modern, black and white retelling of the famous Shakespeare play of the same name which tells the story of love and deceit between two couples: Hero and Claudio, and Beatrice and Benedick. While Hero and Claudio court and prepare to marry each other, Beatrice and Benedick steal the show away with their wit, humor, and constant bickering. Though they both insist that they hate each other, the flashback presented at the start of the film suggests that there is far more to the story than meets the eye. While the style of the film certainly enhances the story being told, making it a timeless classic entangled with modern society, it is the ensemble cast that work both individually and as a unit which make the film a true masterpiece, as well as the genius idea of a change in scenery that propels a sense of realism not often found in your average Shakespeare adaptation.
Don John plays an essential role for nearly all of the trickery and deception in this play. He acts like a catalyst and an instigator for trouble, whose sole aim is to marmalize the love and happiness between Claudio and Hero. Shakespeare uses foreshadowing of Don John’s villainy to display the trickery and deception: ’It better fits my blood to be distained of all than to fashion a carriage to rob love from any, in this, though I cannot be said to be a flattering honest man, it must not be denied but I am a plain-dealing villain. I am trusted with a muzzle and enfranchized with a clog: therefore I have decreed not to sing in my cage. If I had my mouth, I would bite, if I had my liberty, I would do my liking.
However, I feel that Keanu Reeves is not suitable to play the part of Don John. In another version of Much Ado About Nothing, the actor cast as Don John was much older and less handsome, which made him appear more of a villain and I feel, for this reason, he succeeded in playing the role of Don John. I think that Keanu Reeves is inappropriate to play this role because the audience does not immediately recognise him as a villain. Keanu Reeves normally plays the part of the hero; the person that does the good deeds; the one who attracts the women, which provides him with a false image at the beginning of the play. It's imp... ...
Shakespeare’s play ‘Much Ado about Nothing’ has two main female characters, Beatrice and Hero, who are cousins. Both appear to be completely different in the beginning of the play but, as things progress and their characters develop, there are also some very obvious similarities between them. Hero and Beatrice have a very close relationship; they are best friends. Leonato is Hero’s father but Beatrice has no parents, which gives her greater freedom. Where Hero is polite, quiet, respectful and gentle, Beatrice is feisty, cynical, witty, and sharp.
In the play ‘Much ado about nothing’, Don John is a puppet whose strings are pulled by various characters and the society in which he lives. Although he does monkey businesses like every character in the play, he is the one who gets harshly judged and punished for it. His villainy is not an innate trait but rather, he chooses it to distinguish him from others.
When being an illegitimate child like Don John, one begins to think of themselves the way people treat them. Therefore, when Don John acts in his villainous ways, one blame it on Don John or rather the people who made him feel that he is less than human. Don John believes that his only way to be acknowledged is to act in a way no one will forget, therefore he acts as the villain in Much Ado About Nothing, because that what society made him out to be.
