The Domus Aurea, Golden House of Nero
In AD 64, Nero set fire to the city of Rome. The exact reasons he did it are not fully known. It is thought that he partly did for poetic or artistic purposes, or for the purpose of clearing away a city that had currently dissatisfied him. In its place however he did rebuild a better Rome, for the most part that is. A large portion, and arguably too large of a portion, was expropriated for the use of his own residence to be called the Domus Aurea. This is translated: The Golden House, and so, the residence is called: The Golden House of Nero. While the Domus Aurea had rather unjustified reasoning behind it, it is one of the greatest architectural achievements of the ancient world.
Nero’s residence before his Golden House, was the Domus Transitoria. This was by now means any small living space. It was considered to be a mansion in itself. This palace linked to the Imperial Gardens of Maecenas on the Esquiline hill. It also spanned up the Velian slope beside the Forum (Grant 164). However this structure was not destroyed in the fire of 64. However it did clear out a valley behind it making room for Nero’s future house. Promptly after the fire construction was begun on Nero’s Golden House. It would continue until AD 68 (Wheeler 142). In fact the Domus Transitoria would soon become part of the new Domus Aurea.
The architects of this great project were more engineers than they were architects. Their names were Severus and Celer (Picard 116). They were more like Italian bosses heading up a team of technicians who came to Rome in hordes due to their recent fire. However, these engineers main goal was to make the estate look bigger and be bigger without actually expanding. They accomplished by working on it from the inside out, utilizing paintings on walls that gave the impression of going on for infinity.
It is an under statement to refer to these buildings as houses at all though. They were clearly much more than this, in even their smallest proportions. The Domus Aurea itself was a series of buildings and landscapes designed to give the impression of a vast park in a relatively small area for such a thing (Picard 116). The idea behind this was that you would create something more beautiful for the beholder if your creation was beautiful for how you used the earth.

At a very young age he became a stone mason, however his journey into architecture began when he met Gian Giorgio Trissino who immediately saw ability in him and decided to mentor Palladio. Built between 1550 and 1570, the Villa Rontonda, a Renaissance villa in Northern Italy, offered a new formula for the ideal Italian villa. The name “Rotunda” refers to the villa's circle within a square design. Palladio carefully used calculated mathematical equations to perfect the symmetry of the villa. Located on a hill, the Villa Rotonda features a centralized plan including four identical facades each with a projecting porch arranged symmetrically around a central round dome. Drawing from classical influences, each portico resembles an ionic temple front and each portico has a pediment adorned with statues. In fusing the temple porch onto a centrally planned dome covered building, Palladio clearly had the Pantheon in mind when designing the villa. Turning to antiquity, Palladio modeled his villa from Roman precedent, using distinctive elements to make his design innovative and contemporary. Like the aforementioned architects, though Palladio relied on classical ideals of symmetry and proportion, his ingenious design of the Villa Rontonda that allowed the landscape to be seen from all four sides of the villa was completely innovative at the time. Likewise, the Villa Rontonda differs from other buildings built at the time with centralistic plan and dome design. Additionally, Palladio introduced an innovation by combining a classic temple with a façade of a house. Traditionally, temple fronts were reserved for churches and public buildings, yet Palladio incorporates religious overtones into an otherwise secular space through adorning the villa with the temple façade. By designing a completely symmetrical building and using through the elegant use of circles and squares, Palladio created a sophisticated construction that emphasized balance and uniformity. According to Tacitus a historian who lived through this period and recorded the fire in some detail wrote, “The fire spread quickly, and burned for five days. It completely destroyed four of fourteen Roman districts and severely damaged seven others.” It was not certain who or what started the fire, but it was rumoured that Nero had planned it. Others said differently. A famous rumour was that Nero played on his fiddle while Rome burned, but this rumour was just a lie. The Flavian Amphitheater was built from 70 CE To 80 CE. The Flavian was Rome’s largest amphitheater standing at 157 feet and with a perimeter of 1788 feet. It was built to cater to the roman community and their enjoyment of sports. That being said the entire amphitheater was built for the ease of the community. It was placed in the center of Rome. The amphitheater was built in an oval shape. This feature helped give an all around view for spectators. There were four stacked levels. The bottom two levels were meant for the nobles and the upper two levels were meant for the common people. Even though the common people sat in higher seats they still maintained a visual due to the stacked arrangement. The book The Great Fire of Rome by Stephen Dando-Collins begins with the story of Nero and his life before power. As the book continues it shows Nero come to power and then slowly lose his mind. The book discusses the persecution of the Christians, and at one point focus’ on a 26 year old man named Joseph, who has become a Roman citizen, he meets a man named Paul who is on trial for being Christian and is waiting for the ruling on his case. Paul is taken away and Joseph finds his way to Rome and meets a Jewish actor who is loved by Nero, through this relationship Joseph becomes friends with Nero’s wife and with her help he tries to influence people with the Jewish religion. Then the great fire happens and the author shows two possibilities of what could have happened, with Nero starting the fire and with the fire starting by accident. Over the next couple of chapters there is talk over suspicions of who actually started the fire. Nero is a suspect and eventually convicted of starting the fire but Nero only saw this as a boost to his name. The story ends with a reflection on the good and the bad that Nero had done.

His reign was full of lust, conspiracies, and murder all of which could top anything Forensic Files could have ever dreamed possible. He was not always destined to be the next Emperor to Rome and it would take a lot of planning, mostly by his mother, to make his succession possible. However, the young Emperor was a member of the unofficial dynasty of Rome, the Julio-Claudian’s, a lineage dating all the way back to Emperor Augustus who was the first and very beloved Emperor of Rome. Despite being a part of the Julio-Claudian legacy, Emperor Nero’s hegemony was filled with murder and questionable decisions that all eventually cultivated to his suicide.
