65 million years ago, almost 70 percent of the life on Earth died. The most possible reason of why this happen is an asteroid impact. Many people often confuse asteroid with meteor and comet. The differences between these three is that comet is a giant ball of dirty ice flying through space, melt by the heat of the sun and leaving a tail, meteor is anything that fall into our atmosphere and burns up leaving a tail of fire and dust and, asteroid is a rock that is orbiting the sun. Most of the Asteroid are found in the asteroid belt which is in between Jupiter and Mars. Now a lot of people often question the existence of asteroid and the most asked questions is why are they there? What purpose do they fulfill in the solar system? And what are …show more content…
Hencke discover another one and name it Astraea, and since then more and more asteroid is discover. Soon people realize that there is no planet in between Mars and Jupiter but a belt of asteroid. Now we finish with the history of asteroid we can start focusing more on asteroid itself. The name asteroid came from William Herschel who is an astronomer, he think that Ceres and Pallas should be in another category rather than being call as a planet. “Asteroid which is derived from the Greek for “star-like”… made sense: The space rocks often looked like little points of light when see through the telescopes.” (Wall, 1) Asteroid have been around since the birth of the solar system. “They are the remnant debris from the formation of the inner solar system…the original materials and the mechanisms which formed the terrestrial planets.” (Badescu, 35). There are many types of asteroids which are made up by different substances, Astronomer are able to determine the substances that made the asteroid by how much light it reflect from the sun and here is what they found “It appears that the compositions of asteroids vary with their distances from the …show more content…
However, people like astronomer knew that this can happen and an asteroid impact is one of the most likely way that the earth will end in and it is one of the most unpredictable, because astronomer found asteroid out there that is coming toward earth but some are hidden somewhere that astronomer cannot see, like
about to take place. All a meteor is, is a chunk of rock of that is being
Not long ago on the 15th of February 2013 an asteroid named 2012 DA14 merely scrapped the earth’s surface by a tiny margin, even closer than some satellites. According to the NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) the asteroid was 17,200 miles above our planet's surface, which may seem a long way from earth. However, in terms how big the earth is compared to the 17,200 miles, we can acknowledge that many people were saved from death.
The Kuiper Belt is an icy-bodied disc shapes area of the Solar System. Kuiper Belt has a circular shape, to be exact, it is a curved plane. It is over 4.5 to 7.4 billion kilometers from Sun. This is roughly 30 to 50 times the distance of Earth from Sun. The Kuiper Belt has been said to resemble the Asteroid Belt that lies between Mars and Jupiter. The difference between the Kuiper Belt and the Asteroid Belt is that the bodies are icier due to their distance from the Sun. The Kuiper Belt objects includes Pluto and other comets that orbit beyond Neptune. Most Kuiper Belt objects are made up of frozen volatiles such as methane, water and ammonia. In 1950 astronomer Gerald Kuiper predicted the existence of the Kuiper Belt and the find was named
On June 30, 1908, the Tunguska Asteroid struck an isolated area in Siberia. The asteroid was 164 feet in diameter, and caused tragic devastation to the forest that it hit. People 37 miles away from where the asteroid touched down were knocked off their feet. If this asteroid were to hit a populated region of Siberia, thousands of people would have been killed. Asteroids have the ability to cause significant damage; it is believed by some that an asteroid wiped out all the dinosaurs, in the Pre-historic Era.
The third inaccuracy I’m pointing out is that the big asteroid is preceded by lots of little ones which hit New York City, Paris, Shanghai, etc. It is possible for the Earth to be pelted by precursors of the main asteroid, hypothetically speaking, if the initial impact with the comet sent shrapnel flying. But that shrapnel would disintegrate quickly, and most likely by the time the shrapnel reaches the Earth, very little would be left. And another thing: why do movie asteroids only target big cities? I bet upstate New York got hit
The reason I think it is realistic because the power goes out all the time. The second reason is because asteroids are not common, but do appear occasionally. The third reason is because when people are met with a situation where an obvious enemy is not shown they will usually go after them.
Armageddon begins by showing the destruction of the Earth by an asteroid 65 million years ago, when the dinosaurs inhabited the earth. According to the narration, the asteroid is said to have been six miles wide, with the power of 10,000 nuclear weapons. The after effects were trillions of tons of dirt and rock thrown into the atmosphere, creating a blanket of dust that the sun was unable to penetrate for 1,000 years. The narrator explained that it happened once, and that it would happen again, it was only a matter of when.
Pluto: A Planet of the Earth? Many issues have arisen from the debate over whether or not Pluto is a planet. Some astronomers say that Pluto should be classified as a “minor planet” due to its size, physical characteristics, and other factors. On the other hand, some astronomers defend Pluto’s planet status, citing several key features. Indeed, most of the problem is that there is no formal definition of a planet.
Everything is burned to a crisp. In addition, if we look at the quote from the book where the actual event takes place, we can read something that would happen if an asteroid hit the Earth. “A long shear of light and then a series of low concussions... He went into the bathroom and threw the light switch on, but the power was gone. At first, just as in the book, a bright light would be seen called “the shooting star effect”.
The history of the planet's discovery is the first we have of its kind; Uranus was the first planet to be discovered with a telescope. The circumstances surrounding the discovery of the object are befitting of the odd planet. The earliest recorded sighting of Uranus was in 1690 by John Flamsteed, but the object was catalogued as another star. On March 13, 1781 Uranus was sighted again by amateur astronomer William Herschel and thought to be a comet or nebulous star. In 1784, Jean-Dominique Cassini, director of the Paris Observatory and prominent professional astronomer, made the following comment:
He figures out which ones are coming our way, and whether or not they are a threat (Kluger 1). Astronomers estimate that one in a thousand asteroids that pass our Earth will hit us (Booth 98). This may not seem like very many, until you consider that we are hit with at least one basketball sized asteroid every day (Kluger 6). So what happens when our one sizeable asteroid a day ends up being the size of a mountain? Well, if it happened today, we would surely be dead.
Sixty-Five million years ago, 70 percent of life on Earth died. The most reasonable and possible reason this happened was an asteroid. An asteroid hit the Earth very hard, and in doing this, dirt and dust from the impact stayed in the air and it blocked out sunlight, that’s why the dinosaurs died. An asteroid is a rock from outer space. Asteroids have orbited the Sun along with the planets since the solar system formed about 4.6 billion years ago, but it’s only been 200 years since we first discovered them. Meteorites are small pieces of asteroids broken off on impact with other asteroids. Most meteorites are rusty brown on the outside, have rounded edges from melting as they go through Earth’s atmosphere, and contain iron. There are 3 different types of meteorites: stony, metallic, and stony metallic.92 percents of all asteroids are stone, 6 percent are made of iron and nickel, and the rest are a combination. Some meteorites also contain gold, copper, platinum, and carbon.
1. Asteroids are the pieces of rock that came from the asteroid belt between planets Mars and Jupiter.
When it hit the Earth, the asteroid left an enormous crater that measured 24 miles deep and 125 miles wide (Erdman). Just the impact of the asteroid destroyed the forests and landscape of the majority of North America due to its massive shock wave (Erdman). Many species went extinct when the asteroid hit, these species include dinosaurs, ammonites (certain ocean dwelling creatures), pterosaurs, and some plant groups dinosaurs, ammonites (mollusks related to the octopus and the chambered nautilus), pterosaurs, and certain plant groups. Although devastating, the asteroid did not wipe out all of the animals on Earth, it didn’t exterminate fish, frogs, turtles, birds, mammals and crocodilians (Erdman). These animals survived and evolved into the animals that exist today.... ...
So many meteorites hit the Earth, but there aren’t very many craters to prove it. This is because, not only are most meteorites that reach Earth very small, but the Earth’s surface is always changing. Many meteoroids enter Earth’s atmosphere every day but most of them are only a few milligrams in size. Only the largest ones reach Earth’s surface as meteorites. “The average meteoroid enters the atmosphere at between 10 and 70 km/sec” (Meteors, Meteorites, and Impacts). The really big ones aren’t slowed very much, and these are the ones that make craters, but they are very rare. Very few of the meteorites that hit Earth are actually discovered and made known to scientists, as well as craters. Not very many impact craters are found on Earth partially because about 70% of the surface is water but also because of plate tectonics and continental drift. Plate tectonics and continental drift states that plates are gliding over the mantle and the Earth’s crust is being
