In this essay I will be going over how developments in technology effected the form and content of documentary films, I will be exploring how advances in technology have improved the way we watch and understand documentary, also I will be going in-depth about how social media and the internet has brought new ways of creating documentary film, for us the public. going over how the advances in technology have brought a variety of documentary styles. and how each have progressively proven to show that documentary filmmaking is never over and there will always be something out there for us to invent or find.
Documentary was not so proudly looked upon in the early years of cinema back in 1890 to 1920's, as back then you didn't have the right essential to travel and film on the go. Without the advances in technology, documentary filmmakers will struggle to produce new and interesting films, this was until the portable cameras where invented and brought to our use, providing a whole era of talented young directors, we understand and see more of the world now than ever before due to the facts and imagery that is produced by documentary director. Since technology has grown since early cinema the content in which documentary has provided us, is in variety of modes such as expository documentaries, observational documentaries and reflexive documentaries, all these offer different areas of film. This is due to the fact documentary can push the boundaries on how far they can go and where they can go, due to the fact that digital technology is increasingly alternating, giving new opportunities to offer an exhilarate and more stunning pictures/films for the public/audience to see and be a part of.

The invention of handheld cameras and various other equipment was a step forward in every filmmakers eyes especially documenters, because documentary filmmaking was falling behind all other forms of filmmaking such as action, drama and thrillers. The creation of portable cameras have been able to help documenters explore new ways in which they can provide us with information if it's through the cinemas or through the internet, documentaries have provided us with unseen footage and information that we the viewer would not of known about. I personally believe that documentary filmmaking has grown successfully over the years, creating a wider range of audience's who look towards documentaries as a way of seeing life, they would normal see or take part in.
Bridge to Freedom provides the historical documentary behind the events that served as the narrative for Selma. Instead of a drama, the viewers receive an actual documentary that shows the confrontations between the marchers and the government. Like Selma, it highlights the violence, the deaths, and the beatings, but also goes further back in time to show society’s treatment of African Americans.
In this documentary, the conventions and techniques included are; real footage, recorded audio, written codes, montages, use of authority figures/experts, facts and statistics, interviews, bystanders, animation, background music etc. The four conventions/techniques that I will be discussing in this essay will be real footage, use of authority figures/experts, sound and bystanders.
This report aims to make light of certain elements of documentary making that are perhaps more susceptible to influence on the director’s part, and once again explore the effect of these decisions on the audience’s reaction to the information presented.
Analysis Of Two Documentaries I will be analysing two very different types of documentary, 'Dogtown and the Z-Boys', which takes the role of being a full length movie type documentary, and 'Teenage Transsexuals' which was recently shown on Channel 4. 'Dogtown and the Z-Boys' is a documentary which takes a look at the transformation of surfing into skateboarding. The film follows the evolution of skating through it's heyday in the 70's, to it's decline in the 80's, and then back upto it's popular return in the 90's. It also follows the Zephyr team, a high profile surf/skate club which revolutionised the skating industry right upto the present day.
The documentary A Place at the Table reveals some very startling facts about food insecurity in the United States. The directors, Kristi Jacobson and Lori Silverbush, relate the stories of three people to present the struggles common to people who are faced with food insecurity. Barbie is a young single mother who struggles to provide for her two young children. Rosie is a young student who has trouble focusing in class because she is hungry. Trmonica is another young student who has health problems, which are worsened by the unhealthy diet that her mother is able to afford. Through the stories of these three people and the testimonies of some experts, the directors present an argument dealing with food
Humankind has always held a certain fascination for babies. We see a baby and our automatic response is generally one along the lines of “awwe”. New mothers often experience an increase in attention from strangers when going out in public with their new children. The bottom line is we love babies. Their big eyes and general helplessness evokes a certain almost maternal desire in each of us. Aside from the obvious psychological and evolutionary science behind these emotions, infancy is a universally significant time that transcends all cultures. The documentary Babies choses to explore this time by examining four newborns and their mothers in Nambia, Mongolia, the United States, and Japan.
Filmmakers engage the past as a historian but not specifically in a way actual historians are doing. Historians use archived facts ranging from documents, photos, or objects from a specific time era to understand history. Contrastingly filmmakers as a historian can only bring to life a certain part of history without altering the past by focusing specifically on an aspect of the subject at hand. Scholars Marita Sturken and Barbie Zelizer argue how well-known filmmakers use film techniques or credibility in order to portray what happened in the past. Filmmakers as a historian is limited to only details they can use based on documents and archived history to re-tell a history through mise-en-scene to become a faux “historian”. Sturken and Zelizer would argue that filmmakers are not real historians; specifically how film can be made to manipulate the past towards the vision to get a narrative through that appeals to the film viewer and director. Filmmakers are not real historians since they can be biased to specific details of what occurred in the past.

Throughout the US, millions of POC students exposed to the traditional, rather outdated version of US History. Never do the textbooks explicitly mention and/ or explain the terrorizing, constant stripping down of others’ cultures and appropriating it into the dominant group of predominantly white, Anglo-Saxon and protestant. For many Mexican American students, they can’t relate to anything in the text, nor do they share an interest in the coursework provided. The way US history sets up doesn't teach and somehow excludes Indigenous backgrounds or for the most part was never taught in the classroom but, rather briefly mentioned in one or two paragraphs. Immigrants from diverse groups built this country yet their culture is consistently shown
Entertainment has traveled from burlesque and vaudeville to high tech filmmaking, and this is the physical existence of our century. The Era of Silent Film in the early 1900s had such geniuses as Charlie Chaplin who paved the road to the time of the "talkies" and to development of sound. If not for him and some other "greats" along the way, where would our film culture be today? Much of the history of our nation seems to be held as digital recordings through visuals. In this respect it is interwoven with the current era of computer information because we want to preserve and record the history of the present as well as at the turn of the millennium.
Traditional ideations of film and documentaries have been to create scripts that are structures to fulfill a set idea. The challenge with scripting an idea is that the script writer(s) have a subjective view of the documentary. The vastness of documenting a situation is restricted by the script making it impossible for a documentary film to capture objective realism in their work.
With the advent of television, films start progressing "by leaps and bounds." One kind of cinema is a documentary film. Thanks to the documentary film, which is simple, concise and understandable form, tell us about nature, culture, history and science, and replenished our "body of knowledge." This is the positive role of cinema in which the means of the common man gets a huge amount of information without losing its finding and processing of your precious time. It increases the overall level of culture. The story of “Australia” makes us closer to the problems of Australian native people, and still, it tells us a beautiful story of Australian people which would be erased if it had any other form except film.
This is a critique of" Roger And Me", a documentary by Michael Moore. This is a film about a city that at one time had a great economy. The working class people lived the American dream. The majority of people in this town worked at the large GM factory. The factory is what gave these people security in their middle working class home life. Life in the city of Flint was good until Roger Smith the CEO of GM decided to close the factory. This destroyed the city. Violent crime became the highest in the nation, businesses went bankrupt, people were evicted from their rented homes. There were no jobs and no opportunity. Life was so bad that Money magazine named Flint the worst place to live in the entire nation. When news of the factory closing first broke, Michael Moore a native of flint decided to search for Roger Smith and bring him to Flint.
