Recommended: Child abusement

Children Underground took an emotional affect on me. Reasons behind is because of the topic they choose is sensitive idea, homeless children in Romania, we watched as these kids suffer on trying survive. But what really makes me feel sort of uncomfortable watching this documentary is the noises the kids were making. The crying and the screaming makes it difficult to watch because what goes through my head is “What would I do if I was in their situation?” and to be honest, it makes me feel like a horrible person. It’s not something that I could explain why but legitimately I just feel horrible.     This was a very troubling yet inspiring documentary. I can’t fathom 27,000 people, five to ten years old, parentless and just walking, BAREFOOT. These poor kids look so hungry, I’ve never seen legs so skinny. However, it brought me comfort knowing the boys formed makeshift families to take care of one another. And it’s pretty remarkable to hear that 11 year olds were capable of taking care of the young (not like they had a choice). I found the bond within their society beautiful. I was disturbed to find out that after traveling 1,000 miles, they lost an absurd amount of lives due to lack of food and water- 1,200 is the new number of lost boys. I also thought it was really interesting that they call themselves “skinny”, a term I thought only Americans used; One of the men then lifts his shirt to reveal a six pack!     England was a society dominated by children. During the reign of Queen Victoria one out of three of her servants were under the age of fifteen. Child labor was a prominent issue, because there were no systems to ensure the safety of children. During the start of the industrial revolution, there was a “high demand” for labor (Robson 53). Many families moved from rural areas to new, industrialized cities. After a while things weren’t looking as “promising” as they did before (Boone 23). In order to maintain, families had to put almost all of their family members to work. This led to a rise in the number of child labor. Children were “mistreated, underpayed and overworked” (Kincaid 30). Using children to do all of the hard work, the mining companies believed, was the most sensible and efficient way to get the job done. Because the children were a lot smaller, it was easy for them to “maneuver through tight spaces” and on top of that the children demanded little or no pay at all(Boone 43 ). These wages were enough to persuade companies to use children for all sorts of dangerous jobs such as coal mining and chimney sweeps. Children were called to do many other “horrible” jobs, jobs that adults in this era could not bear, just so long as the bills were paid (Robson 18).     This is clear through the various mid-shots of the children hiding in furniture having the audience understand on a larger scale the fear that they would have felt which is loosely similar to characters hiding from a serial killer in many horror films. A striking example of this scene is the fact that there is a close-up shot of a cupboard with a child squashed inside, the use of the prop of a cupboard is rather ironic as in concentration camps they would make the Jews make furniture, but the cupboard is essentially somewhat symbolic because it represents escapism, a chance to block out the world and retreat especially within this context.
