Humans tend to believe that their gods love them, that they were created in the image of their gods to be inheritors, to one day join them in immortality, or even just as children who are loved and cared for. However, when examining the texts of ancient civilizations that offer stories about god to human interaction, it becomes questionable whether or not the gods actually had any sort or regard for humans other than as a pet or a servant. Assuming that the human interpretation of actions of the gods is factual, events such as Creation and the Flood- constants found in nearly every civilization- become advocates that humans do not hold the favor of the gods, and even heroes found in Ancient Mesopotamian myths can be thrown aside without regret. While Humans may hope to be cared for by their lords, the opposite may in fact be the truth. This essay will examine the myth of Creation and the myth of the flood in multiple societies, as well as Mesopotamian prayers and myths about human-god interaction such as How Adapa Lost Immortality, as well as Aqhat to determine whether or not the gods really do care about humans.
All religions hold the belief that humans were created by the gods, but the purpose for creation, as well as the method of creation, tends to vary. For instance, in the Epic of Creation, Marduk states that “[He] shall create humankind, they shall bear the gods’ burden that those may rest” (Foster, 38). In this Babylonian myth, Marduk passes this idea to Ea, who is actually responsible for the creation. Ringgren provides an explanation of what the Sumerians, Babylonians and Assyrians, and West Semitics believed was the reason for the creation of man, as well as the morals and social constructs that the gods provided to men, i.e sacrifices, temples, and whether they lived in fear of the gods and if that fear was well placed. He does this using certain prayers and hymns. The source will contribute further to the view of man in the eyes of the gods, whether they were made to serve the gods or other reasons.

The Enuma Elish’s emphasis is not on the creation of humanity, but rather on the rise of the sun god Marduk, and how he became the supreme god. Marduk was born of Ea, who was born of the bitter water god Tiamat, and was very powerful. He was enlisted to defeat Tiamat and her monsters in a great war, and agreed on the condition that he will forever remain king of the gods. He defeated Tiamat, tore her body in half and used it to create the Earth and the sky. He is also credited with positioning the constellations to represent the gods, and assigning jobs to the gods who fought on the losing side with Tiamat in the war. He then created man to serve the gods in their defined duties, as it was deemed beneath them to perform such duties. Amid the rubble of an Assyrian palace, the twelve clay tablets inscribed the adventures of the first hero of world literature – King Gilgamesh, whose oral folk tales go back to at least 3000 years before Christ (Harris 1). Tablet XI contains the story of the Flood. In this essay let us compare this flood account to the more recent Noah’s Flood account in Genesis of the Old Testament.
Creation stories have profound effects on humans. Those associated with ancient cultures/civilizations aim to ensure the successful survival or well-being of themselves and that particular culture/civilization of their association, but not all are beneficial, prosperous, or fortunate. Mesopotamia’s “The Gilgamesh Epic”, Egypt’s “Hymn to the Nile-Documents”, and Mesoamerica’s Mayan and Aztec creation stories/religion are influential to establishing significant relationships within society, whether that is between humans and nature or humans and their “god(s).”

Although the belief in a higher power or religion is diverse, many theologies share common themes. “The Epic of Gilgamesh” and the Hebrew book of “Genesis” are seemingly polar opposites. Christianity, demonstrated in Genesis, is monotheistic, and the Hebrews base their faith on their relationship with God. On the other hand, Sumerian philosophy, found in Gilgamesh, is polytheistic, and the Sumerian people base their theology on fear. The myths which prove the contradictory behavior of the gods, acting as both benefactors and tormentors of man, can readily be explained when viewed in light of the prime directive for man, to worship the gods and not “overstep,” and the ensuing “Deus ex Mahina” which served to coerce man to fulfill his destiny as evidenced by the myths: “Pandora,” “Arachne, and “Odysseus.” Humankind and it’s range of vision over the gods beauty and power portrayed them to be benefactors but unseemingly it depicted their affliction towards humans.
Throughout the world there are various cultures with varying religions and creation stories to explain the creation of the Earth and it’s inhabitants. Of these creation stories two with similar and also different characteristics is the Creation story in the book of Genesis which is a part of the 1st Testament in the Hebrew Bible and explains the creation of Earth and humans, and the Theogony which is the greek creation story that describes the origins of the Earth and the Greek Gods. Both the Theogony and the Creation in Genesis show nature as a blessing for humans but it can also affect them negatively, However the myths differ in the ways that the Earth and humans were created and how humans interact with the deities of the creation stories.
Since the beginning of time, societies have created stories to explain the mystery of the origin of man and the universe. In the Babylonian text, Enuma Elish and the book of Genesis-which originated in the same part of the world-one finds two very different stories about the creation of man. The relationship between God and his creations humans can be said to be a very complex relationship. Genesis shows us many examples of God's interaction with humans and human's interaction with each other. From the creation of Adam and Eve and all the events that follow afterwards, I shall show what the relationship tells us about the nature of God and mankind.
The people thought of all the gods to be wise and would seek their guidance in certain situations. Their religious beliefs brought this respect, and in some ways fear, to honor the gods so they would be gracious in return. “Religious beliefs instilled fear of the gods, who could alter the landscape, and desire to appease them” (Bulliet, 19). Religion has a large place among humans, in self-healing through to political debates, and has existed since man began to think. Humans have always had faith that some divine force is guiding them through their everyday rituals and tasks to lead a better life, and every religion has its differences. The Hittites were not discreet about their beliefs; there are some who may even say that the Hittites were unrestrained in their religious practices. Wherever you stand on it, you cannot deny that Hattic religion and their thousand gods played a large role in the lives of their people. For one example, their surplus of gods would have had a large impact on how and where they practiced their faith, and their extreme polytheism would have altered their acceptance of other cultures. This paper examines the religion of the Hittites, the role of this faith, and where the divine entities and temples fit in within their religion.
Because of the under development of science, Ancient Greeks used mythologies and associated to the gods anything that they could not explain or understand, which also have revealed many aspects of their culture and society, including their views toward gods. Through the survived works of ancient Greeks, one can see that the concept of exchange plays a center role in the relationship between human beings and gods; and that the ancient Greeks had absolutely and undeniably respect for their gods, who are human-like and demand to be glorified.
