The first lesson I learned from this is course is why discipline is important. In the book, Divine Discipline, the author states that discipline is important in our personal lives and relationships with others. Without discipline we cannot grow and mature. Without discipline we cannot experience the fullness of God. Without discipline we cannot minister to others. The bottom line is that discipline is necessary for personal development, for spiritual growth and for Christian service. The second lesson I learned is the definition of discipline. Webster's online dictionary discipline/ self-control is "restraint exercised over one's impulses, over emotions, or desires". A biblical understanding of self-control can be found in Psalm 19:14, May …show more content…
We should all our thoughts and actions be controlled by the Holy Spirit and not our selves. On our own we lack the discipline to be ale to live a life that is pleasing to God. A third lesson that I learned was about the discipline of outward behaviors. I had not thought of overeating, extravagant spending, gossiping or hurtful anger as blatant outward evidence of an uncontrolled life. 2 Timothy 2:21 says; Suppose someone stays away from what is common. Then the Master will be able to use them for special purposes. They will be made holy. They will be ready to do any good work. I learned that in order to have control over outward behaviors we must fight against the evil desires of our human nature. Misbehavior comes very naturally. Our evil desires are sin. Poor self-control or lack of discipline is a symptom. Sin is the cause of our rebellion against God and it comes through in our outward behaviors. The fourth lesson that I learned was about the discipline of inward behaviors. We must all take inventory of our inward behaviors to see what thoughts and feelings need to be controlled. These inward behaviors can be lust, desire for more possessions or money. These behaviors cannot typically be seen outwardly but in time they manifest themselves in an outward
Schall describes ‘self discipline’ to be a fundamental principal that will ultimately enrich the ‘self.’ Hence, to posses qualities of dedication through a set of self-discipline habits are virtues that will enable to comprehend the truth in our reality. Indeed, the author makes a key-point by explaining that one must be able to achieve order in our mundane lives, from what “deviates from what it is we know we ought to be or do.” Therefore, one must be able to overcome any obstacle that may impede from reaching our goal of seeking knowledge and understanding. However, self-discipline is only the “beginning of wisdom, not its end.” Hence, wisdom may be achieve through a personal library, by studying the greatest minds that had existed in the past and perhaps, in the our present time, in which they have come close and/or achieve the goal one purposely

The lesson I appreciated the most is that one should not give up on something they believe in, just
For example, dressing appropriately in public knowing that certain things we wear attract sexual attention. This shows that the lesson of sexual attention being dangerous can be applied to our lives. Sexual attention is dangerous, especially for teens and little kids, and it is this lesson that will save them from being sexually assaulted. In addition, to keep studying in college/school even if you feel like you do not belong. This shows how the lesson of to keep keeping could be applied to our lives. There has been studies that college freshmen drop out of college because they feel like they do not belong there, but with this lesson and a little perseverance the college freshmen would be on their way to reach their goals. Also, for example, to not take first impressions for granted or to not judge a book by its cover. This shows how to apply the lesson of not everything you see is what you expect. Whenever someone new is introduced into your life, you always make a first impression of them, no doubt about it. Whether it be a good impression or bad impression, there is always something stopping you from talking to them or getting to know them because of one silly assumption we made, but who's to say that assumption is correct? With this lesson we would still make our silly assumptions about this person, but knowing this
Many books have multiple life lessons that people can learn to. One of the life lessons that this book indicates is
I believe Wirzba’s claim to be very accurate. If we cannot learn from our actions and how they affect ourselves, others, and the places we inhabit, then we cannot entitle ourselves to be moral beings. We must strive to learn to appreciate everything around us and treat it respectfully. When we experience fruitful outcomes, we then gain knowledge of how to act as moral beings and perform actions that are ethical.
The lesson that applies to both my life and the novel would be how significant it is to understand the past experiences of other people, and acknowledge their hardships to be able to connect as well as having a deeper bond with them. Limón states, “Suddenly, the monk wished he had been born sixty years sooner so that he could have seen the city as it was during the days of the Indian woman’s people…A thought was taking shape in his mind as he fixed his eyes on one of the straps. Slowly, an idea crept forward into his consciousness, and he finally understood that something deep within him was beginning to share Huitzitzilin’s melancholy for what was irrevocably gone.” (Limon, 82). This quote is very significant in the sense that it provides an impact on father Benito’s major character development at the end of the novel. Thus, through the course of discussing the history Huitzitzilin’s experienced, he is realizing how vivid and significant her memories are in the eyes of an India women who witnessed the world with a different perspective. Ergo, putting myself in the shoes of others has allowed me to view and have different perspectives on the way I view life. It has allowed me to become a better person in the sense that I will not demean another person because he or she don’t share the same life experiences as I have. As well as not sharing the
The first life lesson is, to stand up for what you believe for. In “The Ball”, two boys from different religions got in trouble for breaking something when the jewish boy was automatically blamed for breaking a window. The christian boy knew that the jewish boy did it, but he thought that it was wrong that he got all the blamed, so he blamed it on himself. The adults in the story knew he was wrong, but they were trying to talk about not being friends with the boy because he was jewish. He knew that what the adults were trying to do was wrong, so he stood up for himself.
I think the more life lessons you get and keep is good for your self-character. They show good character about you to other people. Because you don’t want to have badly self image. Because if other people see it as a bad self image, then you will try so hard to make it look like a good self image, and that you have good character, then it will make you look self absorb.
As I reflect on spiritual disciplines it is easy for me to look at them and weed out the ones that I do not think apply to me and the ones that I am drawn towards. But as I press into God and ask him what he sees fit and what I need more of, the picture begins to looks different than what I thought I saw before. Since I am so obviously human, I would rather see my life through a different more accurate lens than one that is tainted and imperfect like those of my human eyes. When I look at my life spiritually it is easy for me to see the spiritual disciplines that just come naturally to me such as worship and service. Since I know that those are areas of my faith that I thrive in, I tend to gravitate towards those to try and satisfy my spiritual life but I leave other parts to suffer. I want to gain better understanding of my faith and ultimately cultivate a deeper relationship with the Father.
In this class various lessons were learnt when it came to helping people. The first lesson that encompasses a very broad spectrum is “The 8 Commandments” as the book Peer Counseling by V. D’Andrea and P. Salovey calls them. I consider this the core lessons that I learnt in this class as each commandment taught me a great deal.
Franklin’s 13 virtues there are three virtues that really stuck out to me. They would better my
The Internet’s Effects on Our Minds Today Although the internet has provided us with many useful innovations, is it really benefiting us in the grand scheme of things? With the internet, all the information in the world is at our fingertips or just a click away. A study done in 2011 published in Science Magazine states that, “college students remembered less information when they knew they could easily access it later on the computer” (Sparrow, Liu, and Wegner 776-778). This behavior has, in Nicholas Carr’s opinion, helped to deteriorate the way we process information and how it is stored in our minds. Carr demonstrates his personal struggle with this in the line, “The deep reading that used to come naturally has become a struggle” (572).
Spiritual formation is one subject that I like to discuss in that it really helps one reflect on their own spiritual journey and where they are in that journey. The devil wants to steal, kill, and destroy any step forward towards God. He is not after anything tangible that we possess, rather, he is only after our faith in God and belief in Jesus. Knowing this is part of our spiritual journey as fighting against the enemy requires spiritual warfare in which the only one that can help is Jesus. A transformation in our character to be like Jesus is essential to our spiritual growth. This cannot be done without being intentional with our time, finances, and disciplines.
Achieving any goal requires self-discipline. It involves a conscious awareness of our actions and the ability to overcome some of the bad habits that might be holding us. Instilling self- discipline into our lives is not easy task.
