Character

The main character in the book Divergent is a girl named Beatrice. Beatrice is developed throughout the book by having to do things that push her out of her comfort zone. Beatrice was born in the faction of Abnegation, where everything is simple and alike. Abnegation values selflessness, but Beatrice doesn’t feel like she is selfless. She decides to change to the faction of Dauntless, who values courage. Beatrice has to do things like jump off trains, and fight people to show she is courageous. She decides to start going byTris, because Beatrice won’t fit in with the dauntless. When Beatrice makes the decision to be a dauntless she says “My fathers eyes burn into mine with a look of accusation’. This is because it was selfish of her to choose to be a Dauntless. Beatrice doesn’t like to be told what to do, and will stand up for what she thinks is right. Beatrice tries to be kind to others, but sometimes she just can’t control herself.

Ideas

The main idea is developed when beatrice decides to switch factions, and when she takes the test to see what faction suits her best. When she takes the test it develops the main idea because her results are inconclusive, meaning she fits into more than one faction. Before the test beatrice was sure she was going to pick Abnegation, but after taking the test she starts to think she might want to pick dauntless. When she picks dauntless that develops the main idea because she does what was right for her, even though it was a hard decision to make. The main idea in the book is sometimes you have to do whats right for you. Beatrice does what's right for her, and that develops the main idea.

Evidence

Beatrice has qualities that fit into different factions, which makes her divergent. I know this because the woman that gives her her test says “You display equal aptitude for Abnegation, Dauntless, and Erudite.” (p 22) That makes Beatrice divergent. When Beatrice chooses to be a Dauntless she says “I am selfish, but I am brave” This goes with the main idea because she did what was right for her, and it was selfish, but it was also brave. The point of view is Beatrices point of view, which is first person. I know this because when Beatrice says things like “I am selfish” she is showing that it is from her point of view. The author made the book in this order because the events lead up to the biggest event. I know this because it starts out with her test being inconclusive, and ends up with a war. That is why that author put the book in that order.
