A Fire of Revolution "There is no week nor day nor hour when tyranny may not enter upon this country, if the people lose their roughness and spirit of defiance" (Walt Whitman). In the novel The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins, Katniss is a young girl from District 12, who lives in a society which finds great entertainment in the organized killing of children. These bloodbaths are constructed by the Capitol into an event known as the Hunger Games. In the Hunger Games, kids are thrown into a huge arena and forced to fight to the death. Katniss`s younger sister Prim is chosen to participate in the Hunger Games but Katniss volunteers to take her place as tribute. Over the course of the Hunger Games and the events that proceed it, Katniss changes from being impulsive and feeling impotent into a rational revolutionist, who quietly defies the capitol and takes a stand for what is right. At the start of the story, Katniss`s passive political attitude is the result of years of the Capitols oppression. In one scene, Katniss is in the middle of the woods and her friend Gale starts to rant about how the Capitol is manipulating them. “His rage seems pointless to me, although I never say so. It`s not that I don’t agree with him. I do. But what good is yelling about the Capitol in the middle of the woods? It doesn’t change anything” (Collins 14). From this we can see that Katniss does have an opinion of the capitol but she finds no point in trying to act upon it. Her main goal in life is to provide for her sister Prim and her mother. However, later on while in the Games her mindset and attitude completely change. “It`s the Capitol I hate, for doing this to all of us. Gale`s voice is in my head his ravings against the Capitol no longer pointless,... ... middle of paper ... ...e within her are for the most part very obvious, especially the changes concerning her level of political involvement. By the end of the book, she is no longer passive toward the horrors of the Capitol. Instead, she takes steps to defy them, to show the Capitol that they don`t own her. We also see a huge difference in the way she approaches things. Her original impulsive tendencies are not as prominent toward the end of the story and her ability to make rational decisions has greatly improved. The Hunger Games are responsible for the majority of this change but her friends also play a crucial role in shaping her into the strong defiant character that she is in the end. The old has gone, the new has come. Katniss is lit with a fire that gives her the strength and determination necessary defy the capitol and make a difference in her broken world, a fire of revolution.
This part of the journey begins when Rue dies. Katniss tried to save her and failed. She shares her struggle when she shares, "Rue's death has forced me to confront my own fury against the cruelty, the injustice they inflict upon us. But here, even more strongly than at home, I feel my impotence. “There's no way to take revenge on the Capitol. Is there?” (Collins 1364). This part of the journey continues when she finds Peeta inured. Katniss constantly risks her life to get resources to help bring Peeta back to health. Katniss is willing to go through all of this trouble because Peeta is her friend and she knows that his survival is crucial to her winning the games, and returning to her district. Protecting
Love and hope, together are a timeless literary thematic duo, which continue to inspire countless variations and sub-genres of romance literature. For the last many centuries, romance as a genre, is arguably the most popular of all narratives. However, the theme of love often takes presentences and overarches other thematic interpretation of stories. So why then are people seeking romance in the literature they ready? Suzanne Collins wrote The Hunger Games with the intent to introduce her young adult readership to a number of politically charged themes. Although Collins's work is acknowledged for successfully presenting themes of sacrifice, versions of reality, and power, her audience conversely identifies with the debatable sub-them of love. Social forums, such as the Official Hunger Games Facebook Website exposes an insider's perspective of sort, which reveals public perceptions and interpretations of Collins's work. Even though the purpose for the fan-website built around The Hunger games is to provide a discussion space. Participant's discussions however, unintentionally reveal a...
The Capitol’s appearance deceives the tributes and the surrounding districts. As the train leaves the tunnel from the mountains and is flooded with sunlight Katniss and Peeta rush to the window to see what they would normally see on television with their own eyes.). This demonstrates an act of trickery by the Capital. Katniss further describes the, “glistening buildings…the shiny cars” (59) as having, “colors [that] seem artificial, the pinks to deep, the greens too bright, the yellow painful to the eyes” (59). Through this description that Katniss provides it showcases that the Capitol hides its true colors through this fake appearance of a happy, colorful place. During the interviews, Peeta indicates that he has had the biggest crush on Katniss Everdeen for the longest time but Katniss takes this the wrong way and Haymitch corrects her by saying, “"Who cares? It's all a big show. It's all how you're perceived" (135) Haymitch’s viewpoint demonstrates how characters must deceive the truth to strategically improve one’s chances to win the games. Katniss and Peeta use this budding romance to gain more sponsorships throughout the entire games. Also, at the end of the novel Haymitch warns Katniss that she must convince the Capitol that her act with the berries was not treason “your only defense can be you were so madly in love you weren't
Katniss is the main character in the novel, The Hunger Games. The author of this book is Suzanna Collins. Katniss is a 16 year old who has been chosen with 23 other tributes. In my class we have studied themes and key ideas such as Power of the Capitol, Competition against other tributes and Sacrifice for what Katniss acts and does in the Hunger Games. There are many themes but I have chosen these 3 because they show the most emotions and power.
The Hunger Games is a movie and a book from the trilogy The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins; which also includes The Hunger Games: Catching Fire and The Hunger Games: Mockingjay. The Hunger Games movie is about how each year there is an annual event called the hunger games. In the hunger games they are two people, one boy and one girl who range from the ages of 12 to 18, who are picked from each of the 12 districts to go fight for their lives and for their district to win. The catch about the annual hunger games, is that there can only be one victor. In this movie, the main character Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawerence) volunteers for her sister Primrose Everdeen (Willow Shields), who just turned 12 and this was the first year that her name had been put into the lottery. Katniss knew that her sister could not fight for her life in the games so she volunteered to take her spot, because she knew that she would have a better chance than Primrose to stay alive. When Katniss volunteered for her sister...
The movie The Hunger Games, originally based on a book by Suzanne Collins, is about a place called Panem, which is ruled by the Capitol and has 12 districts within it. These 12 districts are separated founded on their economic statuses, meaning the higher the district, the more impoverished the residents are. There are 2 tributes that are chosen to participate, forcibly, in The Hunger Games each year. Each competitor is instructed to eliminate one another in order to survive and come out on top. There is only one tribute allowed to come out of the arena alive. Katniss lives in District 12, which is the most impoverished district of them all, and she volunteers as tribute in “the Reaping” when her sister is chosen to participate. She and the other tribute from her district, Peeta, make it into the arena with the hopes that one of them comes out the winner and above all else, alive (Ross, 2012). I will refrain from going any further just in case you have not read the book or have not seen the movie. In terms of soci...
In a flash forward episode to the near future, twelve boys and twelve girls are selected to appear on in a live TV show called ‘the hunger Games’. Katnis is an inspirational leader who puts herself before and someone who thinks consequences before actions. Suzanne Collins go to an extraordinary extent to portray Katnis as a hero. Collins portrays her as a hero and above all puts people before her throughout the novel and this is evidently correct when it is her and Peter as the last two survivors, and to win one must kill the other but they are both from the district, in the novel Collins writes in chapter 25, “they have to have a victor, without a victor the whole thing would blow up in the game maker’s faces. If peter and I were both to die”. Katnis twists the game and figures out how to beat the game she and peter decide to commit suicide, or at least pretend to so that they either both die humble or both live and get one up on the game makers. This action is so powerful because she rebels against pretty much the owners of her entire district and resents the use of violence and refuses to play the murder game. She above all puts her family first, straight up in the book it took 4 words to have her becoming an extraordinaire hero. ‘I volunteer as tribute’. When her younger sister is randomly selected to partake in the annual games she instantly
Katniss is a good person at heart. Katniss may have hunter’s instinct; kill anything or anyone who tries to harm the people she cares about. Katniss would risk her life for them. Even in the games, Katniss would not kill the one person who stood in her way of winning. Katniss shows what matters compassion and her humanity. Katniss shows she is more than apiece in their games (232). Katniss remembers what Peeta said on the Roof. Peeta said,” I don’t want them to change me in there. Turn me into some kind of monster that I’m not” (141). Katniss does not want to lose herself, which she never does. Katniss shows she is a good person by forming alliances and taking care of other tributes. Katniss does not think she is good but she really is even if she cannot see it.
Every single year, the capitol forces every district to choose one girl and boy between the ages of twelve and eighteen to engage in the annual Hunger Games for the Capitol's amusements. This has been going on for many years until Katniss Everdeen changed everything. Before I tell you how it all started, let me tell you some background about her. She is a sixteen-year-old girl who comes from a poor family. From where she's from, her district is the poorest and dangerous. In the morning of reaping day, Katniss met up with Gale in the forest to team up and hunt together for their families before the event starts on the afternoon. The reaping is a ceremony where all the districts choose one of their girls and boys to partake the annual Hunger
Since she is the female victor from district 12, she is in the 74th Hunger Games. She sees how painful and scary it is and so she tries to stop the capital which is who is controlling everything. She doesn’t want that to happen to anyone else. She rebels against President Snow in plan of eventually killing him to take over the capital and change the world. Teens can relate to this because a lot of the time we feel controlled. It might be by a parent, teacher, grandparent or someone else but all of us are controlled by someone. A lot of teenagers end up rebelling because they feel as if they have no choices. They go against the rules of who they are rebelling against. That persons rules and values are not necessarily right. Who decides what is right? It seems as if we have entered into a state time where there is no right and wrong. Katniss breaks free of that control and does her own thing. Another way teens can relate to the hunger games is through the love triangle. Some of us might have a similar situation of where we might like two people. In the movie it says, “What I need is not Gales fire, kindled with rage and hatred. I have plenty of fire myself. What I need is the dandelion in the spring. The bright yellow that means rebirth instead of destruction. The promise that life can go on, no matter how bad our losses. That it can be good again. And only Peeta can
In this novel, the Capitol started the Hunger Games to remind the citizens that rebellion will not be tolerated and without them the Capitol would have no control over the 12 Districts and the population within them. As the population of Panem is in its all-time high, it is decreed that every year one man and woman will represent their district in the Hunger Games to fight to the death and the one winner of the games will be wealthy and famous. Katniss Everdeen, a girl from District 12 volunteers for her sister Primrose Everdeen because she loves her and that she would certainly die in the arena. “I protect Prim in every way I can, but I’m powerless against the reaping. The anguish I always feel when she’s in pain wells up in my chest and threatens to register on my face. “(Collins 16). This quote signifies that Katniss shows compassion and nobility by giving her sister a fighting chance to live and survive and that she couldn’t see her sister in pain. Also, Katniss feels that the Capitol showcases the games each year as a source of entertainment because people in the Capitol are wealthy and do not need to worry about competing in the Hunger Games and Katniss is furious that the Capitol tears her apart from a normal life and from her family. During
She does whatever she must do to put food on the table, whether it is trading, stealing, or doing something illegal. During the day, Katniss would sneak out of the district and hunt to make ends meet for her family. Although this is illegal because it is an act of rebellion, this truly shows determination (This can be seen in page 6). "And you're good?" asks Haymitch. I have to think about it. I've been putting food on the table for four years. That's no small task". (7.19-21) this is a great example of showing that Katniss is the provider of the family and without her, the family would probably die in starvation. Another example is how great she is at gathering of food. She needed this skill in order to feed her family and because of her knowledge of the forest and woods, she knows her way around the wilderness, knows where to look for food, and how to build shelter, which is an extremely important skill in the games. Finally, part of her responsibility of the provider is also getting all supplies and needs for the family. She trades in the hob which is a black market to accommodate all the supplies for the family. Again this shows determination even if it means breaking the law and trading in the black market. All these examples, shows the responsibility of what Katniss brings to the table and how she is more than able capable in caring
Rebellion is seen when the little girl from District 11 dies. Those in that district start to fight the men in uniform and start destroying things around. Also, when Katniss and Peeta attempt suicide at the end of the game they make the authorities change their mind. By this action Katniss and Peeta manage to affect the decision of the gamemakers which is the first time it has happened. Katniss can be seen as the intellectual leader who stood for what she believed in as she didn’t kill her male counterpart. The president of the Capitol hates the fact that Katniss is making changes to the game although she does this indirectly.
‘The Hunger Games’ follows the life of Katniss Everdeen, a teenager who lives in the post-apocalyptic nation of Panem. The Capitol, a technologically advanced metropolis, demand political power over the nation and do whatever is necessary to keep the rest of the population under their control. Annually, a reaping ceremony is held to determine the boy and girl that will represent each of the 12 districts. The Hunger Games is a televised fight to the death which is held annually to teach thr 12 districts that the Capitol is more powerful than them. The winner of The Hunger Games is the last man standing, and is promised an ever flowing river of money, resources and nationwide fame.
I volunteer as tribute!” pg. 22 was the first sign of the discipline Katniss Everdeen possesses. Katniss was backed up against the wall, her sister was being sent off to die, so Katniss reacted. The reaping was a substantial turning point that molded the attitude used by Katniss to win the games. She established herself as a legitimate threat in the games at this point because of her fearlessness to protect her family. Further evidence suggests that Katniss was able to volunteer because of Gale. Gale is needed because someone has to support the Everdeen Family through this tough time. Katniss knows her mother is not strong so someone needs to be there in case she falls apart again. She is also prepared for the game, whether or not she knew it is a different story. She has the tools needed to survive in a hostile environment, this is because she is from
