Critical Lens Paper on Divergent In the story Divergent there are factions. These factions represent what the people during the time consider to be good qualities in humans. This society which is based on the futuristic city of Chicago have narrowed out which traits they deem to be dangerous to the community and attempt to destroy all teachings that cause these traits to be developed. Thus they have created five factions in order to make a more productive and peaceful world. People in these factions hold the same traits. Amity was established for those who believe that happiness is the key to a peaceful community. Abnegation was created with the mindset that we should be selfless in order to have a peaceful community. Erudite was created for …show more content…
Throughout her life she does not feel as though she fits in. She has a hard time being selfless. Every year, when the children turn 16 there is a choosing ceremony that takes place. The children and their family members go into the city. Each child is called down to choose whether they would like to stay in their home faction or if they would like to switch to another faction. Tris must make a hard decision and ultimately chooses to join Dauntless. When she arrives there she is rudely awoken. There are two stages to the initiation into Dauntless. The first stage is physical abilities and combat training. Tris soon finds out that neither weakness nor gender matter in this faction. She is forced to fight a male named Peter. Dauntless could care less about who you are or were. They want men and women both to be at the same strength as each …show more content…
The Erudite leader is Jeanine Matthews. She is a strong and intimidating female leader. She is very powerful and demands people listen to her. She is also very smart and manipulative. She is a representative of the erudite faction. She has power and authority over almost everyone in erudite. In Tris’s home faction Abnegation her father along with another man named Marcus are representatives of their faction. Who represents the factions is not determined by what gender you are but solely by how well you represent your faction and how good of a leader you are. Dauntless have representatives of both genders. Divergent doesn’t specifically have roles for each gender. People in this futuristic city are seen as more than what gender they are. They focus more on who they are as a person and what qualities and abilities they
Given the nature of man, factions are inevitable. As long as men hold different opinions, have different amounts of wealth, and own different amount of property, they will continue to fraternize with people who are most similar to them. Both serious and trivial reasons account for the formation of factions but the most important source of faction is the unequal distribution of property. Men of greater ability and talent tend to possess more property than those of lesser ability, and since the first object of government is to protect and encourage ability, it follows that the rights of property owners must be protected. Property is divided unequally, and, in addition, there are many different kinds of property; men have different interests depending upon the kind of property they own. For example, the interests of landowners differ from those who own businesses. Government must not only protect the conflicting interests of property owners, it must, at the same time, successfully regulate the conflicts that result from those who own, and those who do not own, property.
First of all, in order to have an interesting story you will have to have a tone of voice that contributes equally to the meaning of the story. According to Divergent, “I want to be brave, and selfless, and smart, and kind, and honest.” This quotes supports the idea that Tris can in fact fit into all factions and therefore is divergent. Tris, faces with this conflict of being divergent since it is looked down upon. But, even though she faces this serious situation, she has a strong and powerful mindset throughout the journey.
The world is filled with many different types of societies and cultures. This is due to the fact that many people share dissimilar beliefs and ideas, as well as diverse ways of life. People lived under different circumstances and stipulations, therefore forming cultures and societies with ideas they formulated, themselves. These two factors, society and culture, are what motivate people to execute the things that they do. Many times, however, society and culture can cause downgrading effects to an assemblage if ever it is corrupt or prejudiced. Society and culture not only influences the emotions individuals have toward things like age differences, religion, power, and equality but also the actions they perform as a result.
. Factions can be present in many different settings in society. They can be a passion for different opinions on religions, government, or war. Madison claims that "the most common and durable source of factions has been the various and unequal distribution of property. Those who hold and those who are without property have ever been formed distinct interests in society." The modern government includes factions as necessary operations, and the regulation of these interest groups form the foremost assignment of legislation.
The Federalist Paper number ten was an essay written by James Madison to support the ratification of the U.S Constitution. Its content deals with factions and how the effects of factions can be minimized. There were two options given; to do away with liberty, or create a society with the same opinion. To eliminate liberty was out of the question. That left the second option, giving every individual the same opinion, which is unrealistic. The main obstacle is that as long as people have free will and are able to think freely they will form different opinions. The difference in opinions that occurs leads to factions. People no matter how just will always look out for their own interest. The example given
Learning about it and talking about it are two different things to me. Even though Divergent is set in a futuristic world a lot of the structures in that society go hand and hand with our society today. We have achieved or ascribed statuses, kids who are born into religion or parents who decide they want to be a certain religion. We have kids born into a certain job and do it because their parents want them to choose it. I see day in and day out people following the rules because they don’t want to be an outcast in society. If you don’t follow our society’s norms people look at you like you are crazy and no one wants to be looked at like they are crazy. If you don’t follow society’s rules then you can end up in poverty and have no one to care about you. So many people in the movie followed the rules because they thought that’s the only way society can be ran but it isn’t. Today I also see a lot of the same things going on. In the movie Tris stepped up and did the right thing, once Tris did that more and more stepped up and joined the cause. We today do the same thing, we don’t step up and do the right thing until others do. In present society we have primary groups who each have their purpose of keeping society functioning. We have teachers who teach knowledge to kids who someday will have jobs to keep society running. We have the work labor force to do the things that people like politicians don’t want to
Madison defines factions as a group of people who gather to protect and promote their special economic interests and political opinions. According to Madison, factions can either be a majority or minority. These factions work against each other, ultimately leading to the work against public interest. Basically, factions are political parties, because people are acting on common passions or interests.
In our contemporary times the founding fathers would not see a problem with faction, because now we have a very strong central government. Factions today can be consider any type of groups that has an objective such as AARP, NAACP, Occupy wall St. and many others. Over the years factions have become larger and more powe...
Since the late 1700’s, an era where the formation of political parties began, people have come together based upon similar views or opinions, otherwise known in the political world as factions. Factions have created political parties, factions have also created freedom. Madison claimed that there were two methods of relieving the mischiefs of factions; removing its causes or controlling its effects. “There are again two methods of removing the causes of faction: the one, by destroying the liberty which is essential to its existence; the other, by giving to every citizen the same opinions, the same passions, and the s...
...d or risky through the observation of faction. Faction exist because populate are human being and have tendencies to act on their own fixed cost. In Federalist 10 Madison deputies release of faction. Today Madison’s Federalist Report #10 is well thought out one of the most significant essays ever written for political reasons. Madison wrote Federalist 10 to get the people of New York to support the constitution that would replace the Articles of Union. If in agreement to support the constitution, then the constitution will support a substantial work government and weak states rights. In increase, he wrote federalist #10 so the people could break and control factions, and from a federal state. Factions are subject who are cooperative and motivated by a common interest or passion, that are contrary to the rights of other citizens or occupy of the territorial dominion.
Egalia’s Daughters explicitly expresses how genderized our culture is by presenting the opposite of what we know to be true. The book reverses all that we know to be socially acceptable and correct for men and women by reversing those gender roles and creating what we know to be masculine as feminine, and what we know to be feminine as masculine. Brantenberg writes about a society where men (she calls them manwim) take on what we consider to be female roles. They stay in the home, take care of the kids, are stereotypically passive, ditsy, subordinate to women, unintelligent, etc. Whereas women in the Egalian society (she calls them wom), make the money, are powerful, dominant, aggressive, authoritarian, etc. Wom are looked up to and considered the more powerful sex, and menwom are considered to be vulnerable and weak.
10 Madison sees faction as bad for government. This new constitution would establish a government that could control violence. He sees this violence as a result of factions. The cause of differences in people in society is different; people have different opinions, experiences and environments. Madison explains that factions are inevitable; people will always group together with people who are similar to them. A big contributor to factions is the possession of property. Madison realizes that you cannot control the causes of faction but, you have to figure out how to control the effect of such factions. There is no way to give everybody the same opinions so factions are
Set in a futuristic dystopia Chicago there is a society that is divided into five factions: Abnegation; selflessness, Amity; peaceful, Candor; honest, Dauntless; brave, and Erudite; knowledgeable. Each represents a different virtue of living one’s life. The children of this society have to decide whether they want to stay in their faction or switch to another, the choice is theirs. The young Beatrice “Tris” Prior makes a choice that surprises everyone including herself. After what seems to be the wrong choice, Tris and her fellow faction members have to go through a very competitive training in order to live with their new faction. They must go through intense psychological tests and extreme physical training that can either transform them or destroy them. If they fail to complete their training successfully they will be left frictionless and an outcast to society. While the Dauntless train, the Erudite devolve a life threatening plan that is carried out that night. They developed a serum that stops the brain’s thought process and all of the Dauntless become sleeper soldiers for they were injected with it. The serum does not work on Tris or Tobias “Four” Eaton because they are both Divergent. When they try to escape they are both caught and brought to Jeanine, the Erudite leader. She then sentences Tris to death and Tobias is sent to the control room to view the attack. Tris is locked inside a glass tank that fills with water, but moments later her mother saves her life. ...
Most importantly it is cited that the most severe and dangerous conflicts will arise between none other than people with different cultural entities, specifically those along the fault lines between civilizations. Reason for this being that they are all in search of the identities and as Huntington has already said that there is no way you can love what you are if you do not hate what you are not , hence the arousal of the conflicts. In their search of identities they hate what they are not so that they can have a deeper love for what they are.
First, Identity had a lot to do with the movie. Tris and Four both had trouble finding out their identities and who they were. Both of them were trying to figure out where they fit in and where they belong, which is hard to do. It took her a long time to figure out where she fit in. She was in between divergent and dauntless, but in the end she was found as divergent when she was dauntless most of the movie. Four is basically trying to figure out the same thing she is. And by the end of the movie, she doesn't know who she is. But four said he knows who she is.
