It is safe to say that plenty of people distrust the police. This topic has a high correlation with our ethics class. The word “distrust” is an impactful term. The majority of the time, where you live will most likely shape if you distrust the police or not. Whether a person lives in a community that distrusts police officers or whether a person sees it on the news, today’s world knows this topic well. In general, the way police officers treat the community they work in is the same way that community will treat them in return. There are many ways to go about all the different types of situations that law enforcement officer’s encounter, but there is only one way to be ethical, and that is by making the correct decision. There are plenty of police departments within the United States that can benefit from good public service ethic models. Most of the time it is just a hand full of individuals within a police department that make an entire organization look bad. However, each employee is a representation of their organization, so the issues should be addressed as a whole. Immigrants, criminals, low-income communities and regular everyday citizens are part of every community; they should all trust that the police would handle every situation without violating ethics. This statement has been proven to be correct every time we search ethical violations amongst public servant employees. The majority of the time these ethical violations include finances, which also leads to laws being broken and it also includes abuse of power. Pursuing personal agenda in a public position is unacceptable, politically and most important ethically (Lewis & Gilman, 2012). As a public service duty, maintaining the public trust is the optimal goal. This goal can be accomplished by avoiding conflict of interest, avoiding the appearance of impropriety and by maintaining impartibility (Lewis & Gilman,
The job of a law enforcement officer sometimes can be tough. Officer are sometimes plagued with situation that test their ability to enforce the law and maintain order. Police officers today face a constant battle to maintain higher ethical standards. This mission becomes tougher each day when one considers the importance of fighting terrorism, drugs, human trafficking,
Officers are known as public servants, they are held at higher standards than everyday citizens. According to Wyatt-Nichol & Franks(2009) when officers behave unethically, it is a violation of public trust and damages the image of law enforcement everywhere (p. 40). Officer should receive in-death training of cases that make headlines within the newspapers or media. For example, the Freddie Gray or Eric Garner case could be used in scenarios with the steps taken to avoid any ethical dilemmas they could possibly run into. Updated training should be conducted every 6 months for ethics alone in addition to the yearly training that’s already in place. The civilian review board can recommend more training of officers that engage in unethical behavior or misconduct. Intense training, followed through with morals is important factors to avoiding the civilian review board and their process in reviewing investigations against officers. When all training officers receive has been overlooked and failed to comply. Police officers should be held accountable for their actions, through training officers learn to understand their position and need within the community. Although training is offered yearly and on an as need basics, officers are held to a high standard within their community. Some tend to lose sight of their mission of daily duties which are to maintain order and
As many people see in the news now a day that some police officer have been seen on television and videos that black males are being killed by white officers (males). But what people do not know is that there is news that is bias because the news will give you want they want the public to know or what will catch the public 's attention. And this is what makes the minority (race) upset because they think that officers are intending to kill black male. In contrast, what the police officer try to do on the daily basis is to make the street and the community a better place and they do not wake up in the morning thinking to themselves that they want to kill someone just for the heck of it. For example many people believe that there should be justice
When we think of the police, we normally think of the brave men and women out on the street, enforcing the law, catching criminals, helping out the public in cases of emergency and making us feel safe in general. Most of the Police in most of the world is like that which is a good thing, However in the United States of America the police here are a bit more ruthless. Most of the police officers are very nice people and they really do want to help out in their community, but unfortunately there are some bad and corrupt cops in the system that will break the law and do some bad things. In the Modern world most bad cops are seen as racist and trigger happy. They don’t kill for fun of course but whenever they feel threatened they are trained to
Visualize a mother of two kids and a wife of a police officer waking up everyday thinking that her husband has a possibility of being killed. With that being said, I firmly believe that police officers should protect themselves with any means necessary. Recently there have been many scenarios of people claiming police brutality and also shootings taking place in regards to police officers and members of the community. Aside from the great pride that comes along with being an officer, I believe that it is the duty of an officer to protect the community around him, but that can only be done if the police officer has the full support of the community around him. The shootings and assaults that have been taking place are all in all the result of the police trying to defend themselves by making quick, rational decisions to be vigilant and better protect the community, as well as taming the increasingly
Within our police system in America, there are gaps and loopholes that give leeway to police officials who either abuse the authority given to them or do not represent the ethical standards that they are expected to live up to by society. Because of the nature of police work, there is a potential for deterioration of these ethical and moral standards through deviance, misconduct, corruption, and favoritism. Although these standards are set in place, many police officers are not held accountable for their actions and can easily get by with the mistreatment of others because of their career title. While not every police abuses his or her power, the increasingly large percentage that do present a problem that must be recognized by the public as well as those in charge of police departments throughout our country. Police officials are abusing their power and authority through three types of misconduct known as malfeasance, misfeasance, and nonfeasance and these types are being overlooked by management personnel who rarely intervene even though they know what is happening. Misconduct is wrong because it violates rights and causes people to be wrongly accused of crimes or be found not guilty and set free when they are still an endangerment to other people. The public needs to be educated on what is happening in the police system in hopes that someone will speak out to protect citizens from being violated by police officers.
I believe officers in law enforcement are here to serve and protect the citizens of this country. Although as I stated before I also believe that there are still a few that are bad. The majority of them are good. For any kind of change to begin a number of factors need to be involved. The citizens need to use fairness.
"A policeman’s first obligation is to be responsible to the needs of the community he serves…The problem is that the atmosphere does not yet exist in which an honest police officer can act without fear of ridicule or reprisal from fellow officers. We create an atmosphere in which the honest officer fears the dishonest officer, and not the other way around.", -Frank Serpico.
According to Caplan (2003), “cynicism is an inevitable consequence of police work, and a cynic expects nothing but the worst in human behavior” (p.304). When police officers are in uniform most racial minorities see them as a part of an unfeeling institution they can't trust. I believe most police officers are aware of their reality on the streets, but because of frequent danger and the constant reality of staying one step ahead of criminals cause undue cynicism towards the general public. However, research studies has shown this behavior is often more noticeable with veteran officers than newly appointed officers. Next, the ongoing issue of new recruits being rushed through the training academy onto the streets is because there is more crime than available officers to patrol which is one cause of heighten stress for the officers. An example of this comes from a story aired on a local news channel in the
In order to have effective policing I believe integrity and ethics play a huge part in helping build trust within communities. Sound conduct by police improves community interactions, enhances communication, and promotes shared responsibility for addressing crime and disorder. There are three ways that police departments can strengthen community relationships just by training officers about procedural justice, bias reduction, and racial reconciliation. If we implement these concepts, we can create an environment in which effective partnerships between the police and citizens can flourish.
I have respect for the police, and the job they do. Policemen are a selected few who do a dangerous job. Police have done many great things to help improve communities, help people during their off duty hours and stand strong in face of many fears. The police trying to enforce the law are on the streets in all types of weather. Instead of being at home with their families on holidays they are working to keep peace. Everyday, they step out in a world where violence is considered appropriate.
Earlier in this paper, ethics, professionalism, integrity, and corruption were described and defined. Ethics has to deal with behaviors based on what is morally right and wrong. Professionalism consists of good judgment and polite behavior that is very much expected from someone who serves and protects their community. Integrity is the quality of being honest and fair. Corruption is just about the complete opposite of all of those terms.
Police corruption is a nationwide problem that has been going on for many years. Not only is corruption a problem on our own U.S. soil, but police practices of corruption go as far east as Europe and Asia. Many studies, polls and examinations were taken to find out how exactly what the general publics’ opinions of the police are. Officers receive a lot of scrutiny over this issue, but for good reason.
Almost every person in the world will experience some sort of interaction with law enforcement. This interaction could be positive or negative based on the circumstances. Usually when law enforcement gets involved the situation is a negative one and police officers get a negative association. The negative association has led to less support of the men and women who are in charge of keeping our communities safe. The profession of law enforcement is one that is rich with history and controversies.
Public sector ethics is a broad topic and sometimes regarded as a branch of political ethics. The American Society for Public Administration (ASPA, 2013b) and Thompson (1985) suggest that ethics in public sector addresses the important duties of public administrators towards the public. From this perspective, we get a refined definition of public sector ethics. It encompasses morally acceptable justifications and consideration for actions and decisions made in the course of daily duties in provision of services of the government and non-governmental organizations. The ethics attempts to create a free and open atmosphere in governmental operations. The decisions made must conform to the ethical rules, regulations, and principles. The latter
