Job Dissatisfaction Working in Law Enforcement, namely Corrections, I have seen and experienced job dissatisfaction. Working in this field has had negative connotation in today’s society; law enforcement officials are constantly in the media being portrayed in a negative light. In correction, when an employee makes the decision to leave their job, a field that is already experiencing understaffing, it affects the total moral of the shift. “Within correctional facilities (e.g. prisons, jails), it is estimated that 37% of COs experience job stress and burnout. This is higher than the estimated 19-30% in the general working population.” (Finney, 2013) My job in particular is working for the State government, who has recently implemented a hiring and raise freeze, thus creating an environment where employees do not feel that they have job security or that their wages reflect their work. Turnover is directly correlated with job dissatisfaction because the more unsatisfied an employee feels with their job, the higher the turnover overall.

There are three major types of stress in the probation world, high caseloads, paper work and lastly but not least deadlines. As we can see already, each and one of these stress actors is tied to another. Now the question to ask is how these strong and willing full individual deal and cope with their stress. Correctional ideologies have contributed greatly to the present correctional trends in the United States. With all of the correctional ideologies contributing in some way, some greater than others, the United States corrections has seen many problems. One such problem is the steady increase in incarceration rates. In result, the prison facilities have become overcrowded and hard to manage. As Dawe from New York City’s Department of Corrections said, “We are so understaffed and so overcrowded across our prisons, it’s miraculous that we can handle it,”(New Week Global, 2014). In fact, according to the American Federation of Government Employees, Federally-operated facilities have grown by 41% while correctional workers have only increased by 19% (New Week Global, 2014). The increase in the prison population rates is due to five contributing factors: (1) increased arrests and more likely incarceration, (2) tougher sentencing, (3) prison construction, (4) the war on drugs, and (5) state and local politics.
Corrections work is made for special people. “Corrections officers suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder at more than double the rate of military veterans in the US” (Lisitsina, 2015). This is an astonishing thought knowing what war is like across the world and the impact it has on our soldiers. This knowledge makes it difficult on new corrections officers heading into their new positions in jails and prisons. PTSD is a major health problem that can lead to suicide. A study, “found that corrections officers have a suicide rate that is twice as high as the rate of police officers and the general population” (Pitarro, 2017). When officers are put in high stress positions they also become, “less effective at their jobs and they are more likely to display withdrawal symptoms of increased absenteeism, tardiness, and an anticipation of turnover” (Tewksbury and Higgins, 2006). We are analyzing the problems within our company that are causing our employees to become unsatisfied with their job. Then we are going to find solutions. And then do the cost estimates of the turnover costs and the turnover savings after our solutions are implemented.

During the mid 1900s, many changes came about for the system of corrections in America. Once a new idea goes sour, a new one replaces it. Prisons shifted their focus from the punishment of offenders to the rehabilitation of offenders, then to the reentry into society, and back to incarceration. As times and the needs of the criminal justice system changed, new prison models were organized in hopes of lowering the crime rates in America. The three major models of prisons that were developed were the medical, model, the community model, and the crime control model.

Prison was designed to house and isolate criminals away from the society in order for our society and the people within it to function without the fears of the outlaws. The purpose of prison is to deter and prevent people from committing a crime using the ideas of incarceration by taking away freedom and liberty from those individuals committed of crimes. Prisons in America are run either by the federal, states or even private contractors. There are many challenges and issues that our correctional system is facing today due to the nature of prisons being the place to house various types of criminals. In this paper, I will address and identify three major issues that I believe our correctional system is facing today using my own ideas along with the researches from three reputable outside academic sources.
Conflicts, between work and family life, were the most significant issues that affect work and job satisfaction among correctional officers. Home life is impacted by the demands of the job. The difference between a correction officer at work and at home, and family circumstance, like a sick child, places a strain on any work experience (University, 2014). So, when we have a correctional officer, that has stayed up most of the night before, attending to a sick child, and returns to work the following night. This has the making of a safety crisis.
Employee satisfaction, employee turnover, and workplace environment are inseparably linked. Workplace environments heavily influence employee satisfaction, which directly affects employee turnover rates. When employees feel they are not being supported within their first months of hire, they will inevitably leave the company. Employees want to have the security that if they need assistance, someone will be there to guide them. Therefore, it is imperative for organizations to develop a thorough onboarding program and a long-term retention plan.
Another reason may also come from an employee getting a good, decent salary. This not only improves the job satisfaction, but gives the member of staff an understanding of the fact that they get fair payment for their labors. “[But] if an employee does not get satisfaction in their work, they may seek satisfaction in other work unrelated areas. He or she may also be content with work as it relates to those work-related areas. Job dissatisfaction may also cause an employee to quit” (Robbins).
In every work place you will find employees who are happy with what they do and employees who are just there to complain and collect a paycheck. My topic for this discussion will cover job dissatisfaction.
