Schizophrenia is a mental illness and disorder affecting a person’s ability to think, feel, and act. This disorder can cause a person difficulty in discerning the real from the imaginary. This adversely affects social skills and personal emotions. Schizophrenia is very different from bipolar disorder or split personality disorder.

While the exact cause of schizophrenia is still a mystery, scientists have theorizes two possible causes. The first theory is that it is hereditary, as scientists have found the disorder to run in families. Along with the genetics of your family, your environment (or upbringing) may also play a key part, as a viral infection or a stressful childhood has been linked to the development of the disorder. One end of the extreme has the person unable to speak, move, or respond while the other end of the spectrum has the person overexcited. A person with this form may stay immobile in extremely painful or uncomfortable positions and will respond negatively for anyone trying to move them. This form is very rare today and is very treatable.

Residual schizophrenia is characterized by a long-term history of negative symptoms with a rare history of positive symptoms. In order to be diagnosed with residual schizophrenia, the person must have at least 1 year of greatly reduced symptoms. The person will also have experienced at least one psychotic episode characterized by hallucinations/delusions. People experiencing levels of schizophrenia at a young age are more likely to develop residual schizophrenia later in life, sometimes as a result of treatment for the more severe schizophrenia.

Schizoaffective disorder is when a person experiences both schizophrenia symptoms and mood disorder symptoms such as mania or depression. Since this is a mix of two mental disorders, it is not as well understood as the other four categories and treatment is much more difficult.
