Disney is one of the most well-known brands of all time. When one thinks of Disney, movies, theme parks, and characters come to mind. Their movies have generated a large amount of popularity. Despite recent backlash regarding the controversy surrounding new Disney movies, the Disney name is still booming. This paper will discuss the history of Disney, its most popular movies, the current controversy Disney is facing, and my stance on the controversy. Disney was started on October 16, 1923, then called Disney Brothers Cartoon Studio (Walt Disney Archives). Walt and Roy Disney were partners, hence the name Disney Brothers, however, the name was soon changed to Walt Disney Studio (Walt Disney Archives). People do not agree with the decisions Disney has made regarding certain roles. For example, Halle Bailey played Ariel in the live-action film The Little Mermaid. A lot of people did not believe she fit the role because of the color of her skin. Disney and Halle Bailey faced tons of backlash. The issue was not that Halle Bailey was a bad Ariel, the issue was that she did not fit the original description of Ariel. More people would have been okay with Halle Bailey if she only voiced the character, but she played a live-action version of Ariel. Despite the controversy, some people supported the idea, but not enough people did because they could not drown out the negativity. Another example is the live action version of Snow White. The role of Snow White was filled by Rachel Zegler, who is Colombian and Polish (Placido). The main controversy that surrounded this role was racism, some believed that Rachel Zegler was not pale enough for the role (Placido). However, this was not the only backlash Disney faced regarding the live action remake of Snow White. Another casting situation regarding the seven dwarfs brought on more controversy. Out of the seven dwarfs cast, only one has dwarfism (Placido). Peter Dinklage, a famous actor with dwarfism, was dumbfounded that Disney casted a Latina actor to play Snow White but did not cast actors with dwarfism
