A major concern in the business community is discrimination in the workplace. Not only has the United States become a melting pot, creating an increase in cultural diversity within the workplace, but society changes have added to a gender diversity as well (Deitch & Hegewisch, 2013). Company goals require these employees from different backgrounds and ethnicities to work together for a common goal. With that said, people are inclined to have misunderstandings when it comes to individuals who are different than they are.

There are various areas of protection that require employees to provide reasonable accommodations to those that are in this protected group.
Race discrimination would include an act towards someone regardless if it were an applicant or employee negatively because they are a race or personal characteristics connected to race.
Religion or a specific belief discrimination is when an employee is connected to a particular; religion or philosophical belief. Regardless if the discrimination is based on either perception or association.
Sex and sexual orientation discrimination in the workplace occurs when an employee is endangered due to negative employment act, harassment, or denial of benefits due to their sexual orientation, or the sexual orientation (Mayeri, 2015).

Discrimination is defined as “unjustified differential treatment, especially on the basis of characteristics such as race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, or religion” (MacKinnon). Religious Discrimination according to the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, involves treating a person (applicant or employee) unfavorably because of his or her religious beliefs. It can also involve treating someone differently because that person is married to or associated with an individual of a particular religion or because of his or her connection with a religious organization/group. Today, most twenty-first century managers are familiar with Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which states that failing or refusing to accommodate an employee’s religious practices, or taking adverse employment action based on a person’s religion can result in charges of discrimination (EEOC). Therefore, managers should not use or inquire about an individual’s religious beliefs unless an accommodation is requested.

Discriminatory practices include bias in hiring, promotion, job assignment, termination, compensation, retaliation, and various types of harassment. The main body of employment discrimination laws consists of federal and state statutes. The United States Constitution and some state constitutions provide additional protection when the employer is a governmental body or the government has taken significant steps to foster the discriminatory practice of the employer.
