To editors: I did not include statistics for GPA and test scores in this paper because I included them in the previous essay and am under the impression we will be combining them at some point.
The sources I can find through the delta library search that are reliable about this topic are so slim. If you have any input about another source I can try I would love to hear it! Everything I have read is Pro-Homeschool I cannot seem to find a reliable source to site with statistics about Pro- Public School.
The debate about the effectiveness of homeschooling in comparison to public school is quite the debate. How could it not be? Our children, our friends children, and all children for that matter are our future! Our future is dependent on the education and socialization today

Choosing to home school generally means that a parent needs to be home throughout the day which can mean a loss in income. Today, it is very common for it to take two incomes for one family to survive. So not having the flexibility to work during the day may be a huge disadvantage to families. Another possible disadvantage to homeschooling is that it is believed by parents that they can provide the best education for their children, but this is not always true. Home schooling does take time, planning, and commitment. Although parents may want what is best for their children, they may not always have what it takes to provide it educationally. It may also be a disadvantage for teenagers who are homeschooled and choosing to go to college after high school, if they have never been in a public school setting. In high school, students become familiar with a class schedule, the campus, and study groups. It may take longer for a home school student to adapt to a college campus and studying habits than those who have attended a public high school or middle school at some time in their
First, homeschooled children work more efficiently than public schooled children. Because homeschooled children receive more one on one attention than children do in public school, they receive the assistance they need to understand a lot faster than they would in a classroom with twenty other students. This allows them to get extra attention for things they
Homeschooled just aren’t getting the necessary education they need, states have varying or no regulations, their parents aren’t capable of teaching them and they aren’t getting to be social. There are schools that are religious so children can get an education and do that while focusing on their faith too. The government has no way to see how these children are doing so they don’t know what they are being taught or how they are performing academically. A child needs to be in school learning with peers, being social, and learning the vital things they’ll need as adults.
With that said, in the article, “Don’t Let the School Choose You: Pros and Cons” one guy said, “These students frequently outperform their public school counterparts on the SATs and state standardized tests by about 20 percentage points. These students continue excelling into college and beyond with an average college GPA of 3.46 as compared to 3.16 held by their counterparts (Carter, 2015).” So in this situations homeschooling is better than traditional school but you have to think there are a lot less homeschoolers in college verses kids in public school, so this is may be the reason why they have better numbers. What would the numbers look like if we compared only the top 10% of students from homeschooling and the top 10% of students from public schools? One would think that the numbers would look a lot different. People try to make the numbers look good to prove a point, but I think it would be different if you compared the numbers this way. Most kids go to College and forget why they’re
The “deschooling” movement began in the 1960’s due to concern that schools weren’t teaching the same religious values that are taught at home. People feared their children would become anti-religious and lose their values because they were spending time with immigrants. Children homeschooled today can be for a variety of reasons. In addition to the ones listed above, some people believe they would provide a better education for their children than a conventional school would, they want to build strong family bonds, or they are afraid of sending their child to school. I believe these are exact reasons that children do need to be sent to conventional schools instead of remaining at home.
There are many families that are taking their children out of public and private school’s classroom to move the classroom to their homes. In both articles, the parents have different reasons for why they are choosing to homeschool instead of keeping their children in public or private schools. Homeschooling is not for everyone and cannot be taken lightly. There are many different reasons why families would rather homeschool instead of sending their children to public schools. According to parents.com, Jamie Martin wrote an article on What Is Homeschooling? Martin, goes on to state that homeschooling is a progressive movement around the country and the world, in which parents choose to educate their children at home instead of sending them to a traditional public or private school (Martin, n.d).
An estimated 4 million children are currently home schooled with a 15-20% yearly growth rate. According to a California study by researcher Dr. Brian [D.] Ray, 92 percent of school superintendents believe that home learners are emotionally unstable, deprived of proper social development and too judgmental of the world around them. The latest claim against home schooling suggests that home schoolers are potential child abusers. Mr. Ron Barnard, a Holly High School teacher says that he would prefer public schooling for his children because of the peer socialization, extra curricular, and mandated curriculum. Public schooling is more efficient in educating our youth than traditional home schooling.
Education is an amazing opportunity, no matter how one receives it. Since the beginning of the public-school system, homeschooling had become a dwindling sight, until the last 20 years or so. The stigma surrounding homeschooling is one that paints parents as intolerant and children as awkward and anti-social. Many are skeptic about homeschooling and want their children to experience life outside of the home through public or private school. While this is completely understandable, could homeschooling offer a better education and more future success than public schooling? Homeschooling produces better test scores and is more academically effective than public schooling.
Growing up around kids who have only been home schooled and hasn’t ever been to a public school before, I have noticed glaring problems. When socializing with others, they struggle, and need their parents to ask questions for them. They don’t have a set of standards, and get taught what their parents want to teach. They don’t have extracurricular activities that mold them for the future. When it comes to structure there isn’t any, they do what they want when they want. Their parents aren’t teachers, and just teach them what they want to teach them. Finally they don’t get certain benefits offered by all public schools. All these reasons and many more, is why I think Public schooling can be a better educational system than homeschooling.
In today’s American society, quality education is important for one to succeed. Without proper education, a person will find it extremely difficult to apply for college, a job, or to pursue his or her dream. Typically when Americans think of education, public education is the first to come to mind. Public education has been around for centuries and is provided to most children throughout the United States. Due to this fact, public education has been the go to education source for years. Though, this trend is slowly changing with many parents deciding to home school their children instead. Many factors are the cause for this issue, but the common arguments arise from a certain few. For students, public school provides many opportunities ranging from social connections, school sports, and the exposure to teachers who are experts in their fields. But homeschooling is often superior because it offers additional time for students to participate in various extracurricular activities and community service, allows for more individual attention, personal character development, and it offers less exposure to discrimination that is received in the public school environment.
Homeschooling is receiving instruction of education in a place other than an established school. Some parents feel if they keep their children at home, they can minimize the chance that harm can happen. Other parents feel that they know their child best and can utilize personal strengths to work on educational needs. In the past, religion was the leading cause of parents who chose home schooling, now days this does not necessarily hold true.
These disadvantages include, grading, laws on home schooling, social atmosphere, education and the quality of the teacher. Grading is a serious problem with home schooling.... ... middle of paper ... ...
Perhaps the most significant impact of home schooling is the actual learning. There are many academic advantages. In a home schooling situation, there is no doubt a more individualized program of study than any traditional school can offer. Whatever a child's pace or level of ability is, it can be met directly. A parent or tutor can focus exactly on what the child needs extra help or improvement in, as well as what the child excels at.(Ray, 2014) In a public school, teachers must teach to "the middle" and have little time to cater to an individual student's needs on a regular basis.
Homeschooling isn’t just an idea; it’s a way of life. The parents know their children, and kids learn naturally, with out any help, so continuing their interests through one on one interaction could only be good on them. Children learn so much more about the world around when they can be active participants in it. This is an idea that is long overdue.
“Is getting a good education important to you?” Most people when asked this question would answer, “Yes.” This is because it teaches us valuable life skills and prepares us to communicate and engage with others in the world. Education has taken on many forms over the years, and one of the more successful components of education has been homeschooling. Once considered a criminal act of defiance, homeschooling is now legally an option in all fifty states for parents to consider, and it has a substantial
There are a growing number of homeschooled students and it appears homeschooling is successful. Most parents homeschool because of the environment, both academic and moral. The states need to insure all children are being educated. However, the requirements vary by state. Michigan is the most liberal, not even requiring homeschoolers to report to the state. The internet has expanded the types of homeschooling. Combined with the availability of the public school system for specialized programs, homeschooling is now a more popular option. Homeschooling will continue to be a growing area.
