It did not come as a shocker to me that most people would assume college student's "can't write" or have the inability to answer basic questions. In my personal experience living in Palau, being only 17, I always am the youngest amongst my peers. Therefore because of my age, I am considered incapable of making smart decisions or any decisions at all for that matter. But now that college has begun and I am what many would describe as "on my own", I am expected to think rationally and be responsible, as though not six months ago I was still asking for permission to go use the rest room. My point is this, that the world insists on treating us as children until it decides otherwise. The test subjects or as refered to in the article, the "seats" did not only behave differently after they were told to place themselves in the class they thought they deemed suitable for them. But most were more inclined to choose English 098 over English 150, whether it meant they would have to take an extra class or two because of it. I would say that they came up with quite astonishing results but then again, when put into perspective, I would have done the same thing. Had I been placed in English 098 by a standardized test, admittedly, I would be not be happy but had I been given the opportunity to choose I would have chosen English 098. Because it may not be easy for most to say, but some things take more practice than others even if you have to take more time to understand than other people do. It will never be too late or even too early to better yourself, whether it is as a person or as a writer. I can resonate with the feelings of those students who felt inadequate or even incompetent merely because they do not do things as well as others

My parents thought that hiding things from me would help me make smarter decisions. At a younger age that may have worked, but now when a certain situation comes my way, I have no clue what to do. If both learning styles were taught in school instead of the education system always leaning toward only academics, it would have been easier for me to adapt to adulthood now. I openly admit that I lack common sense now because I was always pressured to read the assigned books, meet ridiculous deadlines and get the best grades. I look back on it now and while it may have looked better on college applications that I went to a fancy county school, deep down I feel like I will not be ready to live on my own as quick as I should. I blame the school system for millennials not being fully prepared to enter adulthood. It is ironic that how some children are able to present themselves more mature than adults. The youth of the generation is becoming more mature and are developing adult skills faster than ever. People are beginning to wonder about the age of adulthood and how it should be determined. This controversy beleaguers around privileges such as drinking, driving, and voting. According to the article What is the Age of Responsibility by Alan Greenblatt, society determines that a person is an adult through customary rites, legal rights, and one’s responsibilities. However, I believe that the best way to adulthood is shown through one’s obligation for their priorities and work.
She explains how standardized tests, such as the one her students took, were designed with numerous interference techniques, included questions which were above-grade material, and were administered with inadequate time to answer the questions being presented. Stahlman goes on to express her frustration with a standardized test which was administered to her students by saying "I watched in horror as my precious students, who were gifted poets and writers, inquisitive scientists and mathematicians, lovers of books, remarkable artists, and caring learners, were forced to silently attempt to master a test that was designed to trip them up." (Stahlman 242) The author also states how these standardized tests seem to be high-stakes in nature due to schools being labeled and ranked according to their scores and teachers being rewarded due to their students achievement in these tests. This article serves as one of my stronger arguments for my case compared to my other sources, due to its exemplification of how the proliferation of such tests is alarming and how the standardized testing of students at such a young age is not appropriate due to their cognitive development. The article is also useful in the sense that is provides a valid and sound argument for the opposition of standardized testing. I will be implementing this source into my argumentative essay by providing examples from Stahlman's text on how bizarre standardized testing might seem when it comes to the assessment of students, especially at such a young age. Society today puts priority on a college degree, yet those who end up going to college are not always tended to. Of the entire undergraduate population in the United States, only 24 percent are first generation college students. From that group of students, only 11 percent earn a Bachelor’s degree after six years (Tugend). Often times first generation students are unaware of anything about college. This lack of knowledge leads to them not taking full advantage of all the resources available to them (Parks). Neither one of my parents went to college, so it was as much a learning process for them as it was for me. As a first generation student I believe that it is necessary for there to be some group of people that just devotes their time and attention to helping everyone take full advantage of everything they are being offered.

Many students do not get the help they need to become independent, and being overwhelmed may lead a student to commit suicide, fail, or even drop out during college. If a student fails, his or her self-esteem can be permanently damaged, and the consequences can affect an entire lifetime. Students must receive more help from college administrators and professors and influence them to self-manage better. It is understandable that some people do not want colleges to help more because they want the students to make mistakes and learn from them, which may help them become more independent.... ...

Standardized testing is an unfair and inaccurate form of judging a person’s intellect. In many cases, people are either over- or underrepresented by their test scores, partly because America does not currently have the capabilities of fairly scoring the increasing number of tests. Additionally, many students today are not native English speakers, and their capabilities could be grossly underestimated by these types of exams. Although President Bush is a supporter, many influential people are against this bill, including the largest teacher’s union in the United States, which has formed a commission in opposition to the President’s proposal.
High stakes testing does not accurately determine a student’s intelligence. In 1999, the National Academy of Sciences researched the appropriate and inappropriate uses of tests. They agreed that “no single test score can be considered a definitive measure of a student’s knowledge”(http://www.allianceforchildhood.net/news/histakes_test_position_statement.htm).
Based on the Programme for International Student Assessment’s 2012 results (PISA), the United States has ranked 30th in comparison to other Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) participating countries. The United States, a country that has once held the ideal for educational standards, has now ranked just slightly above other countries that are just being developed. By using high-stakes test statistics to drive America’s educational standards, classrooms are beginning to lose their meaning of helping students to learn and grow as individuals. Because of classrooms just teaching the test are beginning to lose the meaning of helping students to learn and grow as individuals, results of high stakes testing which can be affected by the minutest details, are not a reasonable way to judge overall student competency; a better alternative would be by performance based assessments. “Test developers are obliged to create a series of one-size-fits-all assessments. But, as most of us know from attempting to wear one-size-fits-all garments, sometimes one size really can’t fit all.” (Popham, James W.). High stakes tests are not a reasonable way to judge overall student competency because educators can not expect to have accurate and precise results in just one sitting for 12 years of learning. Although tests pose an important role in education, they should not be given such high stakes of determining if a student should be rejected from a college “based solely on the fact that their score wasn’t high enough” (Stake, Robert.).
It’s nonsensical to believe that every sixteen-year old should know what he or she wants to do with his or her life, and even more so to discourage someone from pursuing his or her interests. In a capitalist society, it makes sense that average salaries a few years out from college graduation would strongly influence the interests of many young people. Once a child goes to school, they could express many of their thoughts, feelings, and needs, and they start taking more significant steps towards independence. Meanwhile, as we go into adulthood, adults can choose things like where they want to live, what they want to eat, what job they will do, etc. In adulthood, it consists of changes in lifestyles and relationships. Furthermore, as an adult, life changes, such as leaving home, finding a long‐term romantic relationship, beginning a career, and starting a family.
