Compassion, respect and dignity must be at the heart of Social Care. People and their needs should be at the centre of the support process. Research indicates that there are eight main factors that promote dignity in care. Each of these Dignity Factors contributes to a person's sense of self-respect, and they should all be present in care as stated n Skills for Care. Choices and control are about the freedom to act, to be independent and mobile, as well as the freedom to decide. Having choice and control over one’s life and involvement in day-to-day living and the wider community supports autonomy and self-esteem. For example, by giving support to cook a meal will help the person to remain in control. In terms of involvement in the wider community, by supporting the client to continue with routine daily tasks such as shopping, walking a dog or going to a place of worship, as well as involvement in …show more content…

Dignity is threatened by treating adults 'like babies' because of actual or assumed incapacity. People need information about what they are entitled to and what they can expect from services. Eat and Nutritional care - Providing a choice of nutritious, appetizing meals, that meet the needs and choices of individuals, and support with eating where needed. Provide assistance discreetly to people who have difficulty eating. While socialising during mealtimes should be encouraged, we must offer privacy to those who have difficulties with eating, if they wish, to avoid embarrassment or loss of dignity. Pain management - Ensuring that people living with pain have the right help and medication to reduce suffering and improve their quality of life. Pain can be wrongly viewed, even by older people themselves, as an inevitable part of old age, but if it is identified and managed it can hugely improve the quality of life of
