The similarities and differences of married life and single life
There are two types of people that have their preferences when it comes to marriage.
A choice that is in each's life that is determined by our personality traits. In the 19th century when Darwin was alive, it was preferred that a man gets married and raise a family. In the 21st century that we live in, it is much more common than we see people not getting married and are living single lifestyles. Darwin had a negative view on marriage according to his lifestyle that he was living. While Darwin has an opposing view on this subject, there may be many benefits of having and staying married. Typically married people live longer lives. Darwin suggests similarities and differences of

Darwin says that being committed in a marriage will give him less time to travel outside of London. “If marry—means limited, Feel duty to work for money. London life, nothing but Society, no country, no tours, no large Zoology.” While it may be true that Darwin will not have to worry about being tied down to marriage, he has to consider the safety of traveling alone. Darwin will have to look after himself, and he will not have the security of a travel companion. A significant part of Darwin's life will involve him working alone. Following the independence that comes with not being married is that Darwin will have more time to work on his research, and he does not have to commit to activities that involve companionship. “Freedom to go where one liked— choice of Society & little of it. — Conversation of clever men at clubs— Not forced to visit relatives, & to bend in every trifle.— To have the expense & anxiety of children—“ Darwin can go out to social clubs without having to worry about taking care of his wife. He has less responsibility than being married. Darwin explains that he will not have to care for the expenses that come with raising children. Nowadays it is more common than it was in the 19th century to be a single parent and have one or many children to provide for …show more content…
Meaning two things which are that most women did not have any rights or high ranked jobs in the 19th century. Wives stayed at home while the husband went to work to provide for the family. Women and children will give an entertainment in the evenings when Darwin gets home from work. But he refers to this as a loss of time. If Darwin marries he will have to stay in London, and become a Cambridge Prof. Darwin would never become a professor at a university because to him this is limiting his potential. Research is his greatest priority. He believes that working in London will become of him because he will need to stay close to his family. This effect would mean that Darwin will have fewer experiences outside of London. He will not have any money for books because his children will need to have money for
Is marriage really important? There is a lot of controversy over marriage and whether it is eminent. Some people believe it is and some people believe it is not. These opposing opinions cause this controversy. “On Not Saying ‘I do’” by Dorian Solot explains that marriage is not needed to sustain a relationship or a necessity to keep it healthy and happy. Solot believes that when a couple gets married things change. In “For Better, For Worse”, Stephanie Coontz expresses that marriage is not what is traditional in society because it has changed and is no longer considered as a dictator for people’s lives. The differences between these two essays are the author’s writing style and ideas.
Marriage, as an institution, has evolved in the last few decades. As society progresses, the ideas and attitudes about marriage have shifted. Today, individuals are able to choose their partners and are more likely marry for love than convenience. While individuals are guaranteed the right to marry and the freedom to choose their own partners, it has not always been this way. Starting from colonial times up until the late 1960’s, the law in several states prohibited interracial marriages and unions. Fortunately, in 1967, a landmark case deemed such laws as unconstitutional. Currently, as society progresses, racism and social prejudice have decreased and interracial marriages have become, not only legal, but also widely accepted.
At some point in our life’s we come across our parents judgments when we get married to a certain someone we chose or simply choosing to live a different life than what we were raised in. In the two short stories “Everyday use” and “Marriage is a private affair” we come across those similar situations where the grown child takes his or her decisions in life without their parent approval. I will compare and contrast those two short stories and show you the similarities between them.
It appears that as time goes by, people view marriage more romantically, and less economically. Samuell Sewell viewed marriage as a way to advance monetarily. In his diary he writes, "I said 'twould cost L100. per annum: she said twould cost but L40"(63). This is just one example of him carefully calculating the costs of marriage.

Inside the article “Why Marriage is Good for You”, Maggie Gallagher makes claims that marriage improves many facets of an individual’s life; including both mental and physical health, longevity, finances, and reduced chances of infidelity (Gallagher). The statements made throughout the article reference many statistics and studies conducted by various organizations and individuals, however, Gallagher falls victim to a number of common logical fallacies. While this weakens Gallagher’s argument in the article, it does not necessarily make it false.
Not being married was not always accepted as what it is today. People of the older generation were forced into marriage, even if they didn’t love that person. It was more of the concept of “they will learn to love each other.” Whereas today, anyone has the option of when to get married, who to marry, or even to never get
Nowadays we live in a world which is full of choices and the choice of the person you would like to merry is one of the most important one. It is really hard to decide whether this person is really “yours” or it is just the illusion. Thus, can it be a better way to have somebody who decides who will you be married to? Some people think it is unfair because person doesn’t have the right of choice but the others think that arranged marriages are a good choice. Free choice marriage is a marriage in which both partners choose each other by themselves and the choice is based on factors such as physical attraction, the desire for emotional stability, love, similar outlooks, personalities, interests etc. However this is not the only way to choose. In arranges marriages the partner is selected by elder family members but the young people may have the right to veto the choice if they strongly disagree with it. There are definitely pros and cons of both and only after taking them into consideration person can decide which to choose: arranged or free choice marriage.
Fairfax, “Marriage is one of the core values of society. Almost 20 years ago, the well renowned black scholar and psychologist Dr. Na’im Akbar (1991) penned the following: ‘‘marriage is such an important lesson in manhood (womanhood) development. It is no wonder that every society requires some form of it’’ (p. 13).” This coincides with the values that I stated above that were considered important in my culture. Marriage is important to more that my culture obviously but in my culture there is always this well-known quote from the bible: “He who finds a wife, finds a good thing (NKJV Proverbs 18:22). That is basically religion and love in the same
To further support her acceptance of arrange marriages, the person that she will marry will not necessarily be a stranger because her parents examine her potential suitor’s and his family’s background. She readily trusts her parent’s judgement so she has no concerns about whether or not the man she will marry is “good”. To close her defensive statements, she explains that she will have her whole married life to get to know and love her husband, so she does not need to ruin the fun before it begins with dating.
The debate on whether to get married or stay single has been raging for a long while, with both sides of the coin having their own pros and cons regarding the matter. Many proponents of either marriage or single life have strong individual convictions, and it is difficult to reach a definitive, objective conclusion. Is the married individual happier than his/her single counterpart, or is getting married just a comfort seeking ritual that people believe they have to fulfill at some point in their lives? It is necessary to dissect this issue in the light of four factors: health and other medical factors, the economic and financial factors, mental and emotional wellbeing and lastly, the social factors. According to Webster’s dictionary, the definition of Married is “the state of being united to a person of the opposite sex as husband or wife in a consensual and contractual relationship recognized by law”.
This may be due to ideological opposition, family opposition, religious opposition, or societal condemnation due to differences in race, religion, gender or class. Sometimes it is also the case where one partner is interested in marriage, and the other is opposed due to one of the above factors.
Getting married is the most important event in our life. From time to time, they always say, “Single life is a sweet dream and marriage is an alarm clock.” This proverb could make young people afraid when deciding whether or not they marry. However, there are differences that indicate pros and cons of both single life and married life. In general, single life can bring us freedom to experience life all by ourselves; at the same time, it also brings loneliness and detachment. In contrast, married life can fulfill us with love, care, and a sense of belonging; however, it also requires us a great deal of shared responsibilities.
