The author talks about white privilege and male privilege, which suggest that there are more types of privilege that equate or similar to white privilege. Further, man privilege is prevailing force in most, if not all societies that give power over women and children, even positions.
What we can do or how is possible to end white or any privilege? Privilege is an established system that has manifested throughout history. Consequently, I may be white, but not privileged.
I tend to believe that having white privilege is not necessary makes him/her racist.
Racism is something that comes out not from the person, or not as a flaw of the person, rather a flaw of the system in the society. Chapter 6. Microaggression in Counseling and Psychotherapy

What can be done to stop such unconscious behavior? Racial Microaggressions in Everyday Life It is difficult to identify a microaggression, especially when other explanations seem reasonable. In this case, is it still considered racism? How can it be determined, whether was intentional or unintentional? Isn’t that matter, of one's
The two articles that had a profound impact to my understanding of race, class and gender in the United States was White Privilege: Unpacking the Invisible Knapsack by Peggy McIntosh and Imagine a Country by Holly Sklar. McIntosh explains the keys aspects of unearned advantage (a privilege that one group hold over another) as well as conferred dominance (the act of voluntarily giving another group power) and the relationship that these factors hold when determine power of a social group. Additionally, the purpose of McIntosh’s article was to demonstrate the privilege that certain individuals carry and how that translates to the social structures of our society. Furthermore, conferred dominance also contributes to the power of the dominant group
Racism is defined as the idea that one's own race is superior and has the right to dominate others or that a particular racial group is inferior to the others. Why feel superior if God created everyone equal and there is not one inferior. Over the history there has been many cases of racism. An example in history is Henrietta Lacks, her eyes still young and playful not knowing she had a cancerous tumor with a multimillion- dollar of immortal cells inside of her. She was one of many persons who experienced racism. The novel of The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot addresses her life has an African American. The racism theme is prevalent in the novel and it shows the fact how African Americas were treated by white people.
In her 16 January 2016 The Washington Post editorial, “What is White Privilege?”, Christine Emba asserts white privilege is a societal advantage inherent in people who are white, irrespective of their “wealth, gender, or other factors.” According to Emba, white privilege makes life smoother and is an entity that is hidden or unknown until the privilege is taken away. Although racism is still a rampant issue in society today, white privilege is a concept created by the progressive left in order to brand whites as a scapegoat for issues and adversities that non-whites face. This concept of privilege ultimately causes further dissension between whites and non-whites.
male privilege” (605). The same problem that plagues white privilege, also affects male privilege. Men have certain advantages that put them over women.... ... middle of paper ...
White privilege is a benefit that society gives to a white person. It is embedded in and supported by institutions, where it overtly manifests and reproduces as inequality (Cox & Taua, 2016, p. 48). This translates into preferential treatment for white coloured individuals. Such injustice results in the oppression of those who are not white, leading to unequal access to education, healthcare, housing, and employment (Gorski, 2003, p. 9).
Many white Americans are living with the fear that they didn't really deserve their success, and that maybe luck and privilege had more to do with it, than brains and hard work. There are numerous reasons for the widespread discrimination at all levels, but the main reason for the existence of discrimination is a privilege to certain groups of people, and widespread social prejudice towards certain groups of people. Differences between people have always existed, but they gain in importance only when are different importance given to certain differences, so it creates privileges. People who are privileged in one society are often not aware of their privilege. It is very easy to be oblivious to the privilege. The problem of discrimination is very complex and there is no unique formula that would solve it. There are general patterns in a white supremacist culture, that all white people have privilege, whether or not they are racist themselves.
America has had plenty of racial unrest, and what 's shocking is how we continue to ignore its side effects. Many people believe white privilege does not exist or it’s not a real thing even though America was built by white people, with a foundation for whites. White privilege is prevalent in America. They believe there is no way the color of someone’s skin, gives them a privilege. In reality, it does. No matter how much we ignore the fact, that the color of your skin can change the way you live, it’s true. It’s not fair, but it’s true.
Let’s start with the definition of racism. Racism refers to the belief that race is the primary determinant of human capacities, that a certain race is inherently superior or inferior to others, and/or that individuals should be treated differently based on their ascribed race.
“White privilege is like an invisible weightless knapsack of special provisions, maps, passports, codebooks, visas, clothes, tools and blank checks” (McIntosh, 172). White privilege is all around us, but society has been carefully taught
The belief that white privilege never existed or that it is no longer a problem is skewed by the selective use facts to support this claim. How do we address this problem? We must define the what is is to be privileged, acknowledge the problem and identify a means to fix it.
Racism is the mistreatment of a group of people on the basis of race, color, religion, national origin, place of origin, or ancestry. The term racism may also denote a blind and unreasoning hatred, envy, or prejudice (Dimensions of Racism). Racism has had a strong effect on society. Despite the many efforts made to alleviate racism, what is the future of African Americans' Racism's long history, important leaders, current status, and future outlook will be the main factors in determining how to combat racism. Racism is still present in many societies, although many people are doing their best to put an end to racism and its somewhat tragic ordeals.
Racism is a belief or doctrine that inherent differences among the various human races determine cultural or individual achievement, usually involving the idea that one's own race is superior and has the right to rule others. This trend has been around for a long time, from slaves, to discrimination, etc. Although in many cases, people in the time period often tend to act like it does not exist. When looking back on certain situations and their aftermath people then realize the true nature of racism. In 1962, 85% of whites thought that black children in their community had just as good of a chance of getting a good education as white children. The constant trend for lack of knowledge about racism and/or discrimination is real. Now, whites, realize that in 1962 black children did not have as good of a chance, if any, of getting a good education in comparison to white children. In 1969 nearly half of all whites (45%) believed that blacks had a better chance of getting a good-paying job than they did. Once again history repeated itself, in that many whites now realize that blacks not only did not have a better chance of getting a good-paying job than they did, they had a worse chance. (Abagond)
As a child I wasn’t informed about white privilege or racism. My family didn’t spend time making sure I understood that whites and blacks were treated differently and since we were black we had to act a certain way. In elementary school one of my best friends was a white girl named Marla Mae and we were friends for a very long time until she moved. I didn’t learn about white privilege until I was in high school and started to explore my individuality. Now that I am an African American woman who attends a predominantly white institution, this issue has become important and open to me. It's not our job to have the majority understand us, but do our part to make sure we are proving we are suppose to be here just like they are.
The issue of social inequality is basic in sociology and extremely common throughout the world. Social inequality is the existence of unequal opportunities and rewards for different social positions or statuses within a group or society. One of the aspects of social inequality in the U.S today is Gender Inequality. Why do men, rather than women, seem to hold the majority of power positions in all societies? (Marger, 2014) We look briefly at some aspects of social inequality: what it is, what causes it, and some of its consequences. In so doing, we shall be using the concepts of structure, culture, relationships and categories of people, and further exploring some of the theoretical perspectives of Gender inequality and its effect on the world.
Racism. What exactly is racism? To be short and fair it is when you discriminate another human being for their race because you feel like your own race is the superior one. It is usually connected to black and white people since these two races has the biggest history together but it can really be any discrimination to any race. It can be about asians, europeans and so on but I will keep my focus on the colored people, also referred as black people.
