1. Militarism refers to all the group sponsored activities involved in preparing for war. This would include training and preparing fighters, also weapons and other resources as stated in our textbook, Social Problems of the Modern World “promulgating cultural beliefs and values justifying warfare”. War is defined to group sponsored violence against another group. War is the act while militarism is the preparing stage. War and militarism are not modern developments; they have been around for a while. They have both caused social problems in the world. Fear is something that controls all individuals’ not just women. Women probably suffer the most from fear because of their lack of being able to defend themselves. Women according to our text don’t drive at night or even by themselves for fear of something that might happen, they change jobs or avoid certain places from lack of fear. I have a fear that something will happen to my children and I will be by myself and not be able to stop it. My fear is so bad, I will not watch certain movies; for example Taken. Also, my fear gets me by not allowing myself to go to the local mall by myself. I think that fear is fueled by the local media always reporting on crimes happening to women by themselves. All you hear about is women being assaulted while leaving the mall around here. Also, I have a friend that had her two kids with her at the local Walmart. While she was trying to help her kids get in the car, a young man snatched her purse and knocked her down. To this day I do not go to that Walmart without my husband because of the fear that this might happen to me. I don’t want to live my life in fear but I do believe I was given a brain to use and if something doesn’t feel right to me or it weighs on my conscience I
War is term that we are very familiar with. First, Friday defines warfare as armed conflict between organized bands or bodies. Then you really need to define organized. Gangs could be considered organized. Or how many does it take to be organized? Could two people be considered organized? I think legitimate should be included in that definition. Then again when two gangs fight, they still are making warfare. When looking at the organized part I think you have to be thinking multiple people.
If a woman was raised to protect her self and to fend for herself, then she is less of a target. If a woman was raised to depend on others for everything, then she is more of a target. Silko told her readers how she was raised to protect herself. Her father took her to the river and taught her how to shoot guns in order to defend herself. Being raised to defend herself paid off when the man followed her to the pet store. She was not afraid because she knew how to defend herself with her gun and that scared him away. Fear is an everyday emotion that the human race must face, and it can bring out the best and worst of us, but its how we choose to deal with it that truly defines us.
War can be defined as “an active struggle between competing entities. It’s truly hard to tell who is right or wrong during a war. Both sides are fighting for what they believe in and what is true to their heart. In the end there is always two things promised – destruction and death. These two objects can explain the result in every facet of war from the physical to emotional.
In the past century, America has made great leaps in terms of equality. With the efforts made by the civil rights and suffrage movements, all people gained the right to vote. We are even moving forward with marriage equality, and currently fifteen states recognize same-sex marriage. But regardless of all of our progressive institutional movements forward, we continue to socially oppress women. Men’s violence against women has grown to be an internationally recognized epidemic, and will continue to grow unless measures be made to stop it. Domestic violence continues to be prevalent in the lives of many families, and is the primary cause of homelessness in half of cases for women in children. Many women have been forced to alter their behaviors out of fear of being sexually or physically assaulted. One out of every three women is sexually or physically abused in their lifetimes. The first thing that comes to mind is, there are a lot of people abusing women out there. Many people with opposing ideas may claim that men can be victims of violence perpetrated by women, but in instances not used for self-defense, it is rarely part of a systematic pattern of power and control through force or threat of force. In fact, 99% of rape is perpetrated by men, but when confronting men about the issue of violence against women, it is often combated with denial. Jackson Katz writes in his book, The Macho Paradox, “We take comfort in the idea of the aforementioned child-rapist murderer as a horrible aberration. A monster. We’re nothing like him.”(Katz 30). War is on some level a game. Usually there is two sides, making moves and taking turns. The only difference is, there are no rules in war. War is a game without rules, without mercy, without emotion. Although certain situations require human emotion and interaction, war is most productive when all emotion is removed and as humans we just perform. Emotionless, robotic, cold, ruthless, and morally indestructible; these are the traits of the ultimate war culture. War on any level is impossible without first burying personal principals and destroying the moral compass.
Since 1970, there has been an increasing and alarming rise 138 percent of violent crimes committed by women. Still, while the equivalent percentage compared to male violence is small 15 percent to 85 percent the fact that the numbers have elevated so drastically points to something changing in society.
Fear influences people to make irrational decisions and take extreme measures. Often times, these actions are done to protect one’s reputation. Fear causes people to lie and manipulate to those they care about in order to escape what they are scared of most. Fear of failure has caused higher levels of anxiety, and has made society put blame on each other, rather than owning up to their mistakes. Fear can also cause one to forget one’s true identity and lose one’s values. There are two options that one can take when being faced with a fear: run away from the fear, or go through it and learn a valuable lesson in the end that will make you a stronger person. Fear is a harmful emotion that everyone has to go through in order to succeed.
“Afraid of what?” you may ask, they are not completely sure themselves. Men do not know how the world will change if women become equal. They fear that their role in society will diminish and they will be left out. Allan Johnson addresses this once in his piece saying, “Women’s potential wildness so threatens patriarchy that it’s been suppressed and twisted to the point of being unrecognizable and shows itself on rare and predictably controversial occasions” (549). Men are afraid of what would happen to them if women were able to take on powerful roles in the world. As Johnson says, men combat this by suppressing a woman 's rebellious nature to the point that their few outbreaks are predictable and can be easily dealt with. In order to maintain their position of power, men have to ensure they are always in complete control of the situation. Kilbourne discusses this point in her essay writing, “In his classic essay ‘The Cybernetic of Self’ Gregory Bateson describes the fundamental belief of Western culture that we can dominate, control, and have power over almost every aspect of our experience. We can get rid of pain, we can dominate people who threaten us, we can win any interaction, we can be invulnerable” (509). Fear has controlled the world and shaped humans into what they are now. New technologies have been created, because of the fear humans have. Over time new fears have evolved, and illnesses occurred due to anxiety and depression from these fears. The terror that runs through each individual is different. Without fear there would be no evolution or protection.
The definiton of war will never change. Its ideal prupose throughly is to cause pain of those who go through it or who are somehow involved. Through my prespective, I believe we need less hostility and use other inititatives and methods of reasoning and resolving problems rather than create brutality and increase death in this world. This book, its descriptions, but most importantly, Erich Maria Remarque, has significantly suceeded in emphasizing an in-dept overlook and understandment of what the outcome of war turns out to be which can also be associated with its supporting literature. We cannot prove anything through war; the only thing we have proven is how low us humans in general have sunk in resolving conflicts. Anybody has the potential power to kill someone through a simple pull of a trigger.

Fear in general drives human beings to be alert of the dangers surrounding us. A woman’s fear could easily be driven by a man just because he is simply a man. In our society we have painted the picture that as women we should be careful when we walk by ourselves at night and we should always be on alert with a weapon ready in hand. A recent study conducted in Canada proved that women were “three times more likely than men to be afraid when walking alone after dark.” (Women against Violence against Women, 2015). Though on one hand our mass media and culture have had an influence to stereotype men to play the “antagonist” when it comes to women walking home alone at night.
War has been around for centuries. From the time modern civilizations began, war has played an integral part in human history. It shaped the world into the modern world we live in. War has been said to be a great motivator, for example, the Great Wall of China was built to fend off the attackers from the north. However, the negative aspects of war far outweighs any positive effects it might have. The destruction of civilizations, cities and countries, mass killings of men, woman and children alike, the disastrous effect it has on economy and the after effects of war can last for centuries.
