Which is better, team sports or individual sports? Although playing an individual sport has many benefits, participation in a team sport is superior because you learn teamwork and respect for others.

The advantage of participating in sports is not well documented in a study done by the Canadian Journal of Related Science. Findlay and Coplan are two researchers with the Canadian Journal of Behavioral Science who did a study on the social skills of kids. They suspect that there is a definite connection between shyness and acting out in children. “The purpose of the current study was to examine the role of organized sport participation as a moderator of the links between shyness and psychosocial maladjustment in childhood.”

There is no one else to blame mistakes on, one learns how to be held accountable and not blame others. In individual sports whether one succeeds or fails is held in their own hands. This teaches them to be responsible for their own actions and decisions in everyday life.

Being on a team means that when you are not playing well or lose a game one’s teammates are there to pick them up and encourage them. Teammates push and motivate each other to do better and work harder. One gains resilience through sharing positive and negative experiences with their team. “Participating in team sports gives kids the opportunity to gain an understanding of both winning and losing, as well as the value of every teammates’ abilities in contributing toward a shared goal (“Why”).”

The feeling of belonging, and having a purpose are acquired. Generally, team sports such as soccer, basketball, football and many more require lots of exercise and fitness abilities. This helps keep students in good shape and healthier all around. Playing an individual sport means one must maintain internal motivation. There is no one else to pick one up when they make a mistake or when they are not doing well. Kids learn how to pick themselves up and also have self-motivation.
