In this poem, Dickenson depicts the particular word Despair through contrasting similes. The difference between Despair and Fear is like the difference between a wreck and its aftermath. The reader must expend thought on the wreck and its aftermath to determine how to assign Despair and Fear for she introduces one set in seemingly the reverse order of the other. This reverse is shown in the difference between how Despair and Fear is like that between “the instant of a Wreck” and “when the Wreck has been.” However, this poem brings up the peculiarity of the key word choice of “between:” because how can anything be “between” the instant and when something “has been?” Since the “instant of a Wreck” and “when the Wreck has been” are in two separate
time tenses, the future cannot be seen and thus nothing can be prevented meaning the fear is first and a natural reaction, while despair is taken into account in the aftermath while dwelling on what could have been different before the wreck. In the first stanza, the “One” who sits between the present and past is presumably anyone. The future cannot be seen and thus cannot be accounted by the “One”. Therefore, the lack of a future means that the “One” cannot see the difference between Despair and Fear in the moment, because one cannot wonder about the actual moment things, the wreck, go worse, and whether or not something could have prevented it. In the second stanza, Dickenson brings up the metaphor that the mind is like an eye that cannot see. The mind cannot see, our perception of knowing visually is contracted through our eyesight, which is dependent on a lot more than just how we see things, but how we perceive them. The mind cannot move like an eye, but it sits upon our head, within our head, just as content as the eye perceiving information.
In dire situations, it is common for people to seek moral guidance. William Wordsworth and Paul Laurence Dunbar did this through poetry. The two poems, “London, 1802” and “Douglass,” share a similar underlying cause, sentence formation, and the conditions of their particular country, but differ drastically in tone, use of comparisons, structure, and the author’s goals.
Both authors use figurative language to help develop sensory details. In the poem It states, “And I sunned it with my smiles, And with soft deceitful wiles.” As the author explains how the character is feeling, the reader can create a specific image in there head based on the details that is given throughout the poem. Specifically this piece of evidence shows the narrator growing more angry and having more rage. In the short story ” it states, “We are below the river's bed. The drops of moisture trickle among bones.” From this piece of text evidence the reader can sense the cold dark emotion that is trying to be formed. Also this excerpt shows the conflict that is about to become and the revenge that is about to take place. By the story and the poem using sensory details, they both share many comparisons.

Through the symbol of knitting, the metaphor of the fountain and water, and the metaphor of the wine, the theme of fate is used fantastically by Dickens in A Tale of Two Cities. Because fate determines the outcome of many situations, these metaphors help guide these situations to their outcomes. The outcomes for many characters were inevitable no matter what because of fate and could not be changed. Without the theme of fate in the novel, the story would have turned out differently because fate determined the events in the novel and how the novel continues. Because of this, Dickens’ use of the theme of fate is superb throughout his novel and enhances the story and to adds to the plot.
Throughout A Tale of Two Cities, Charles Dickens repeats a number of symbols and motifs. By employing these two literary devices throughout the duration of the story, Dickens is working to emphasize the importance of these specific components of the story. Motifs and symbols represent repeating ideas that help the reader to understand, as well as highlight the author’s central idea. Dickens employs the usage of symbols and motifs, such that by using both he adds a layer of significance and deeper meaning to actions, people, as well as objects. Additionally, by using symbols and motifs, Dickens is able to create a story in which both the characters, and the plot are interwoven.
Dickens’ novel, A Tale of Two Cities, has many metaphors, including “the great blue flies,” knitting and the sea to explore the important theme of human inhumanity towards the fellow man into his story. The metaphors are perfect symbols to explain how insensitive and cruel people can be towards one another, despite their pain and suffering. Nevertheless, Dickens includes not only moments for the reader to feel empathy for the victims of the revolution, but also moments of love. This story shows that inhumanity towards the fellow man is a problem in societies that will never be overcome; however, the world would be a better place if everyone strived to have compassion and respect for everyone, regardless of social class, religion, race, or money.

Dickenson’s use of diction creates figurative imagery that further reveals the manner in which the speaker’s attitude evolves. The word choice not only allows readers to mentally visualize the events but also to easily understand the speaker’s feelings that change throughout the poem. Although the word “infinite” (16) describes the speaker’s jealousy toward the woman, it also refers to the divine creator and His place of eternal happiness. The connotation associated with the word shows that the speaker believes in life after death, which clarifies why jealousy arose within her in the fourth stanza. Desire is constantly channeled into another concept instead of naming it directly. This is done so by Sidney to turn an abstract sensation into a solid, concrete object that the audience can better understand. The use of numerous metaphors throughout the poem, including “band of all evils,” cradle of causeless care,” and “web of will, whose end is never wrought,” contributes to a larger metaphor that is in turn greater than the individual. These metaphors contribute to the speaker’s negative view of desire by comparing it to sources of evil and destruction. Through the use of apostrophe in the poem, desire is portrayed as another person, and the reader comes to realize desire’s detrimental nature through what seems to be a negatively impactful relationship between two people with desire playing the role of the manipulator as shown in the line, “But yet in vain thou hast my ruin sought.” Desire does nothing but seek to destroy lives while not revealing its true intentions. Yet, the speaker knows better now after becoming a victim of the concept. By the use of this poetic device, the reader is better able to sympathize with the speaker, assuming he has also gone through a similar situation whether with desire itself or a person whose behaviors mirror that of what desire is described to be in the poem. In the two poems “Facing it” and “The names” there is a great deal of similarities and differences that can be compared and contrasted between the two pieces of writing. In the poem “A song of Despair” Pablo Neruda chronicles the reminiscence of a love between two characters, with the perspective of the speaker being shown in which the changes in their relationship from once fruitful to a now broken and finished past was shown. From this Neruda attempts to showcase the significance of contrasting imagery to demonstrate the Speaker’s various emotions felt throughout experience. This contrasting imagery specifically develops the reader’s understanding of abandonment, sadness, change, and memory. The significant features Neruda uses to accomplish this include: similes, nautical imagery, floral imagery, and apostrophe.

On the first page of the book, Dickens uses a great number of contradictory phrases. Some of these phrases are, “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness, it was the spring of hope it was the winter of despair, we had everything before us, we had nothing before us, we were all going direct to Heaven, we were all going direct the other was, [...]” (1). I believe the use of such phrases has many purposes. One of these purposes is to show the different views in society at that time. Another is to show the significance of time, notice how in the beginning
