College students who have the opportunity to attend a university rather than a community college will find that the process of making friends is an easier one. Making friends while being in college has many factors strung a lot with it. Universities present a bigger opportunity of creating lasting friendships by providing more of a social life with dorm room living, greater social events and lounges for students to hangout at all through the day. The process of making a friend is a very unique one, and it does not come easy to everyone. In all reality, attending a university over a community college is the better approach when wanting to be socially active and meeting a variety of friends.

Community colleges are great when it comes to saving money and classes are small in size if that is what a student is looking for when seeking a college education but with a small amount of students enrolled in a community college compared to a university, it is harder for some to make friends like they hoped for. In a large, university setting, there are many activities that are encouraged by the school and many students take part in to constantly interact with other students. Even the small daily activities, like the walk to classes, can lead to a new friendship if a student finds another person who is in similar classes and sections of campus. College life is vastly different from the campuses of Community Colleges to that of …show more content…
At a community college, extracurricular activities are limited because the student population is smaller and at a larger college such as an university more activities are offered to the students to try to get everyone socially active. Staying socially active is a great way to meet new people and create lasting friendships. American Psychological Association’s Health Psychology journal in June 2014 wrote to Harvard Women’s Health Watch that staying mentally and physically active and having strong social connections can improve your overall health. (qtd .in American Psychological Association). The more activities participated in not only can be beneficial to making new friends but also your health. If attending a community college and not having extracurricular activities around campus how else can one make friends? Community colleges don’t always offer ways to make friends so it leads an individual to go out of their own way to start the process. So when attending a university rather than a community college chances of meeting new people seem to be higher considering the amount of people an individual would be constantly around. Community colleges offer sports but not in the same way universities do. More social events or extracurricular activities students can attend and make new friends is at sporting events. Usually sporting events that are going on at universities are a bigger deal. Meaning more
Entry to community college allows just that. Addison explains, “just follow any one of the 1,655 road signs, and pop your head inside—yes, independent film, a first independent thought, a first independent study” (212). Many potential college prospects are turned away because this self-discovery found in community college cannot be found in private college; however, Addison insists that community college is the golden ticket to regain these would-be scholars. To begin, acceptance is necessary for admittance to many colleges—not community college. In the words of Addison, “down at X.Y.C.C. it is still possible to enter the college experience as a rookie” (213). Any student desiring education, preparation, and self-discovery does not need to look any further than community college, which, for some students, is the only shot at the college experience. On top of this, community colleges provide opportunities like no college—public or private—could. Community colleges provide introductory courses that could not be found in regular institutions; this allows students to explore and get their feet under them. To find and pursue an interest proves more difficult at a college because intense classes are provided from the beginning, whether students have declared a major or have yet to decide. In sum, Addison claims that an atmosphere designed
I wholeheartedly endorse Addison’s argument community colleges contain an environment that allow their student, especially the high school students to get used to the adult live in a timely manner without affecting their grades. But, at some point all those high school students are growing up to become adults, where on their own they will have to manage and balance everything, it is not really
One major decision one must make after exiting high school is whether to go to a university or go to community college. In the article “Two Year Are Better Than Four,” written by Liz Addison. She expressed her opinion on the significance of community colleges in comparison with the university. She stated that community college do not receive the acknowledgment and appreciation that they deserve. “what’s the matter with colleges?,” (Addison 255). although, there is a lot to agree with within the article there are some faulty statements that two year colleges don’t offer the best education possible and that community college are more engaging and individualized for a student and the price is also much less expensive than a university education.
In comparison to a 4-year university a 2-year community college is much more affordable option. Even if a student ultimately transfers to a university, those first two years at a community college can still save a student ten-of-thousands, and some cases hundreds-of-thousands, of dollars, “In 2011-2012, after accounting for grant aid from all sources, net tuition and fees… at public two-year public colleges was effectively zero for students from the two lowest income quartiles.”(Jenkins). Along with saving students money overall, community colleges allow students to work while going to school, so it gives students the pros of both not going to college, and going to college. The one downside of community college is the lack of degree options, but there is still a large selection of degrees that can be acquired at community college, just not as many as a 4-year university. When comparing all three of these options, the community college option seems like the only option where the pros heavily outweigh the cons while with the other options, the cons can easily overpower the
Going away to college is a great way for people to meet new friends and experience new things. Usually a setting unlike their home will help them with both of these experiences. While this may not be true for everyone, I believe everyone should try living in an area unlike his or her own. This is what develops a person intellectually and socially.
Going to college and getting a degree is a very important factor in succeeding in the 21st century competitive world. Nonetheless, many people do not go to college because of how expensive col-lege has become and the fear of being in debt. Sometimes college does not work out for every-one. President Barack Obama has proposed a plan to make the first two years of community col-lege free to encourage people to go to college, get a degree, and make the United States the most educated country or at least catch up to the rest of the countries like Russia and Canada. Howev-er, Obama 's action of reducing the costs of community college will not significantly increase the number of students who will graduate with degrees. Instead of making college
Community colleges have been tool used by many American students and families as a means of affordable education for better life for themselves and their children. Community colleges has played a big role in helping middle and lower income families who can 't afford to go to 4 years colleges ,the chance to educate themselves and their children. Community college was created in order to give basic liberal , technical and vocational education to all willing to be educated.
There isn't anything more important to community colleges than the certainty that they can and should provide all qualified people who are looking to be accepted with admittance (Vaughan). The people of the community college represent forty-four percent of all undergraduates and forty-nine percent of students attending college for the first time (David). These students include a lot of minority students, students with a low social standing and the non-standard (age twenty-five and older) student who commonly enters college less academically equipped (David). Most community colleges have made immense advancement in reducing a lot of geographical and economic blockades that have in the past limited college admittance (David). Community colleges are to be expected to present significant support to increasing occupation proficiency in the future as additional workers realize they must continue to improve their ability all the way through their profession (Black). Many people believe, that because these students are less likely to be ready for college, that they have a better chance of failing (Weis). All students should have the right to expand their knowledge through higher education regardless of how they did in high school.
Should community college tuition be free? Walter G. Bumphus, the President/CEO, American Association of Community Colleges, believes so. According to him, “The Obama administration's proposed America's College Promise plan stands to increase access to these educational opportunities and is a crucial investment not only in the future of these students, but in the country's future… America's College Promise proposal for “free” community college is not a handout. Rather, it is an investment in education and would have substantial economic and social benefits.” Bumphus states the cost for investing in this proposal would be less than 10 percent of the Department of Education annual budget, and “less than 3 percent of all annual federal expenditures”.
Although they are both a lot alike, there are many differentials of the two. Universities are known for having large campuses; consequently, resulting in large number of students in each class. While Universities can range from having 20-1000 participants at a time, community colleges usually have no more than 50 participants in a class. As a result of such a large class size, it is harder for a professor to be able to develop the one-on-one time with a student. Due to most co...
For the past few decades, receiving a college education has been a stressed importance in today’s society. However it is often misunderstood that attending a 4-year school is the best and only way to go. Following this belief, many students attend these schools with out being academically, financially, or mentally prepared. Unfortunately students like this have failed to over look the more realistic options available to them, such as community college. Junior college is a resource available to anyone regardless of his or her previous academic performance. The variety of courses and the inexpensive tuition gives students flexibility to explore the many options presented to them. Though Universities hold more prestige, community colleges provide endless opportunities for students who aren’t fully prepared for a 4-year education
Leaving the comfort of a small town where everyone knows everyone in your school to go to college to start all over again can take a toll on a young adult. I am able to pull out my senior class photo, and put a name to each face of every person I walked across the stage with. After walking down the hallways you have spent the last four years in, you realize you were so close to all your friends because you were able to relate to the part of life you were all in together. Not everyone I graduated with choose to go to college right after high school, or stay home to commute to the community college. Three relationships in my life, including two of my best friend Lacey and Paige, and my boyfriend Alec was affected by the restriction of money, time, and interests that my decision to go to college has created for me .
Attending community college is a great idea, not only for students who are uncertain about their goals for their future, but also for students who are not sure why they are continuing their education. It can even be a great idea for students who have a clear goal. Renowned editor and writer Donald M. Murray conveys in his article “The Maker’s Eye: Revising Your Own Manuscript” the concept that only the writer themselves understand their objective; in much the same way as for writers, aspiring college students are the only ones who truly understand the impetus for their degree choice. There is no getting around the massive monetary savings from attending a community college before a university, but contrary to popular belief that is not the only benefit, there are some majorly understated benefits which in the long run could be even greater than monetary savings. Community colleges allow for a certain level of flexibility you do not find as easily or in as great supply at universities for changing your major. As a major benefit of being close to home many of the distractions involved with living on campus are
College has way more people than high school so different groups will show up. In high school, people flock to the cool kids that have all new gadgets and expensive clothing and in college the kids are very poor and just want to save money, so they don’t mind what they wear. While in college, most people will wear whatever because they don 't care what other people think of them, while in high school, it 's all about doing whatever the most cool kids are doing. In both college and high school, you will make friends that you will have for life. In some cases, kids will find the group that fits them the best in high school instead of college and will stick with that group throughout college.
Those who value both their family and friendship relationships enjoy greater health and higher happiness. While no one should solely rely on friendships, these do have an impact on a person's well-being. This gives a better understanding and allows a person to thrive both physically and mentally. Just as with family relationships, having good friends can enhance the ability to cope with stress and learn how to grow as a person. College is a time for change. For most people it is a time when they find their way and become more independent. They will seek out new things, make mistakes, and learn how to manage time and energy. When life becomes stressful it will cause the need to rely on friends that are going through the same thing. When meeting back up with old friends, they may seem more mature or completely different. The way college changes friendships will be different for everyone. No two friendships are alike, so separation of going to college will affect everyone differently. Some friends will stay close so there will not be many changes and they will probably still text every day. While others will drift apart and might not even talk at all. College students will make new friends, maybe a new roommate, people in their classes, or in the cafe. There are a lot of opportunities to meet new people. Even with old friends in college, those friendships might change and meeting new people will cause one to grow
