What is a diagnostic sonographer?

Being a sonographer requires working with patients on a day to day basis, since there are constant interactions with patients in a fragile state, some requirements are needed to see if the job is meant for you.
Qualities needed to be a sonographer consist of being detailed oriented, have hand-eye coordination since you would be working with machines all day, have good interpersonal skills, have stamina with patients, have technical skills knowing how to work around the machines in case something goes wrong. The job outlook for sonography is projected to grow 23 percent from 2016-2026, which is must faster than the average of all occupations, according to Bureau of Labor
Statistics. As the baby-boom population expands the increased birth rates, the need for analyzing medical conditions are going to have a growth in careers. For example, blood clumps, and coronary illness will need the diagnostic imaging to make the judgement of the diagnoses. The job of sonography will pretty much always be needed due to pregnancies and other medical conditions that can be solved with sonography. The pay for a medical sonographer according to Bureau of Labor Statistics states, the median annual wage for diagnostic medical sonographer was $71,410 in May 2017. For outpatient care centers it was $81,200, offices was $69,890, and laboratories it was $69,690. I chose my career has a diagnostic medical because I have always wanted to work in a hospital setting with patients and kids. I have always wanted to go and put a smile on the kids face and make him forget about the pain for a slight moment. I had always been interested in pursuing a career in the medical filed, but ever since my dad was diagnosed with cancer three years back, it made me want to go into the medical field more. I plan on leaving Houston Community College this semester and transfer to MD Anderson to achieve my bachelor's degree in sonography. Now if for some case I do not get into the MD Anderson program, then my goal is to transfer to the University of Houston, get my bachelor's in health, and then apply to a two-year program to get a certificate in sonography. The field of sonography has such great opportunities such as: good employment, clean respectable environment, good salary, education is not too long and is manageable. Sonography is for someone who would not jump to conclusions, they have to be precise and extremely detailed oriented when drawing conclusions of the results. I think I would fit well into the sonography career field because I love working with kids and people in general. I know how to talk to people I had a retail job since I was sixteen years old, I am patient, organized, responsible, punctual, and I am good at multi-tasking. I also know how fragile patients are since my dad would constantly be in the hospital, so I would know better not to be disrespectful or rude to someone who is trusting me to make sure the procedure goes well. Another reason to why I think sonography is for me is because, I am currently working in a clinic which is teaching me how to talk to actual patients and learn how to extra things such as billing, insurance verification, and learning the medical language. Sonographers offer patients a safe substitute option to intrusive systems, the solace and care given to a patient in their desperate hour is considered to me exceptionally compensating itself.
Diagnostic medical sonography is a profession where sonographers direct high-frequency sound waves into a patient’s body through the use of specific equipment to diagnose or monitor a patient’s medical condition. The area of Cleveland, Ohio has continued to rise in the medical field with great strides, providing better career prospects with the availability of numerous employment positions.
As an ultrasound technician/sonographer I will have the ability to see dangerous defects within the human anatomy and begin a lifelong profession with many benefits. The Ultrasound was first invented in the early 1900’s and was surprisingly not used to produce photos of a fetus. In 1917 Paul Langen a marine life scientist used a form of ultrasound equipment in his attempt to detect submarines. After many failed attempts at using high frequency sound waves Dr. Ian Donald and his team in Glasgow, Scotland invented the first ultrasound machine in 1957. Dr. Donald even tested his machine on patients within a year of completing the invention, by the late 1950’s ultrasounds became routine in Glasgow hospitals.

The dream that I most desire in life is to become a Diagnostic Medical Sonographer. I’ve always had an interest in the inner workings of the human body, but I also value life, and care for others, and my happiness is the happiness of others. Although this career has its bumps on the road just to see mothers face light up when they see the image of their unborn baby is such a breath taking experience. This all originated from going to one of my sisters’ ultrasound appointment that I ended up going to all my sisters’ ultrasound appointments. I believe becoming a diagnostic medical sonographer is something I can do because I have what it takes. Although being academically smart is an important factor for this program, there are also other qualities that are just as important if not more. Some of those qualities that can make you an exceptional sonographer are being compassionate, caring, and being able to work well with others. The reason why I said this is because I believe “people don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care” (John C. Maxwell). Also it’s critical that you understand the concept of teamwork and that you can work well with others. In this field you need to work with doctors and other caregivers to deliver the best care for the patient. I can assure you that if you give me this opportunity to study in this great program, you will not be disappointed, but in fact be pleased, because I will do whatever it takes to complete this program successfully and become a great diagnostic medical sonographer. When a mother finds out she is pregnant it is a wonderful experience. Most people are excited to see their first “picture” of their baby, the ultrasound. Even more exciting is getting an ultrasound to find out the sex of the baby. But ultrasounds are useful for more than just getting that first image of the fetus or finding out whether it is a boy or a girl. While it is something most parents dread finding out when pregnant, an ultrasound can also detect a birth defect. There are many different birth defects that can be detected by an ultrasound during pregnancy like Spina Bifida, Down syndrome, and abnormalities with the heart and lower urinary tract, and the importance of detecting them with an ultrasound is shown in the benefits of discovering the birth defect early, and the options it gives the parents after discovering the birth defect.
Before the mid-1950’s, a pregnant woman would go through some major problems with her body and baby. There is no way of looking at the insides of our bodies and judging what is happening exactly. A woman would not know she is pregnant until she was showing and her menstruation was delayed. Therefore, that meant the due date of the baby was unknown. Furthermore, a woman would not know the baby’s health, including the amount of amniotic fluid surrounding the baby. Woman all over the globe faced problems with pregnancy, until the Ultrasound was introduced. Ultrasound is an imaging technique that use high-frequency sound waves, inaudible to the human ear, to produce somewhat precise images of the insides of the abdomen. A device called the transducer is used to transmit the sound waves through the abdomen. Specifically Prenatal and Fetal ultrasounds, which view the inside of a pregnant woman’s abdomen and the fetus. Prenatal and Fetal ultrasound images can determine and evaluate the development of the baby; including its health, age, weight, and the gender and if any abnormalities exist. It is also a chance to study your baby’s profile months before the baby is delivered. Furthermore, it determines the location of the placenta, the amount of amniotic fluid around the baby and the position of the baby.
In general, ultrasound waves produced by an instrument called transducer are sent into a patient. Some of the waves are absorbed, but the other portion of these waves are reflected when tissue and organ boundaries are encountered. The echoes produced by the reflected waves are then picked up by the transducer and translated in a visible picture often referred to as ultrasound. In the paragraphs that follow, the physics of how the transducer functions, what the ultrasound waves do, and how the image is formed will be explained.
