The profession I have chosen is diagnostic medical sonography. Sonography is an allied health profession providing patient services using medical ultrasound, or high-frequency sound waves that produce images of internal structures. A sonographer works under the supervision of a physician responsible for the use and interpretation of ultrasound procedures, the sonographer helps gather sonographic data to diagnose a variety of conditions and diseases, as well as monitor fetal development. (caahep.org) This is a profession that I am seeking education and program certification in through a two-year program.

One way is to use the tools provided by the Society of Diagnostic Medical Sonography websites. The SDMS provides opportunities to earn and offer credits for continuing medical education or CME. They also offer educational resources for the sonography community. (sdms.org) Other free continuing education classes can be provided by the International Center for Postgraduate Medical Education, myCME, Pegasus Lectures, Society for vascular Ultrasound, Sonoworld, and Gulfcoast Ultrasound Institute. There are also many CME’s that are provided for a small fee. These lists can be found at http://www.ardms.org/Maintain-Certification/CME/Pages/CME-Providers.aspx on the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonography
Diagnostic medical sonography is a profession where sonographers direct high-frequency sound waves into a patient’s body through the use of specific equipment to diagnose or monitor a patient’s medical condition. As described by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, this examination is referred to as an ultrasound, sonogram, or echocardiogram. The high-frequency sound waves emitted from the handheld device, called a transducer, bounce back creating an echo and therefore produce an image that can be viewed on the sonographers computer screen. This image provides the sonographer and physician with an internal image of the patient’s body that will be used in the diagnosis. The most familiar use of ultrasound is used in monitoring pregnancies and is provided by obstetric and gynecologic sonographers, who also provide imaging of the female reproductive system. Other types of sonography include; abdominal sonography, breast sonography, musculoskeletal sonography, neurosonography and cardiovascular sonography. Due to the vast nature of uses in sonography, most professionals study one field that they choose to specialize in. Diagnostic medical sonography is a rapidly growing field because of the increase in medical advances. The area of Cleveland, Ohio has continued to rise in the medical field with great strides, providing better career prospects with the availability of numerous employment positions.
If you're really interested in the world of sonography, it's never too late to get started. Do proper research, start on your certificate or degree and get out into the medical world to start your new career.
The dream that I most desire in life is to become a Diagnostic Medical Sonographer. I’ve always had an interest in the inner workings of the human body, but I also value life, and care for others, and my happiness is the happiness of others. Although this career has its bumps on the road just to see mothers face light up when they see the image of their unborn baby is such a breath taking experience. This all originated from going to one of my sisters’ ultrasound appointment that I ended up going to all my sisters’ ultrasound appointments. I believe becoming a diagnostic medical sonographer is something I can do because I have what it takes. Diagnostic medical sonographer is imaging modality that can work in conjunction with other imaging modalities
Choosing this field is something that has a profound connection with my personal life. Becoming a Diagnostic Medical sonographer would mean that I have accomplished life long dream. Ever since I was a little, I always wanted to be in the medical field. I have always had a big heart and wanted to help people so when I saw the important role that sonographers play in the medical field, it became clear to me that being a sonographer was exactly what I want to do with my life. In 2007 someone who was very important to me passed away due to gastric cancer. When my grandmother, who was a mother, father, and a friend to me, was diagnosed with gastric cancer my world collapsed. It was devastating news, not only for me but also for the whole family.
Per the Bureau of Labor Statistics, to be a radiologic technologist, the skills needed to make you a better radiographer ranges from being detailed oriented, good interpersonal skills, math skills, physical stamina, and technical skills. High school students who is interested in
Diagnostic radiographers are allied healthcare professionals who are specialized in using a wide range of imaging technique and equipment to provide good quality images to diagnose injury or diseases (Singapore Society of Radiographers, 2014). As a professional student radiographer, I have to be proactive and be responsible for my learning. Oswal, Sapherson and Rehman (2009) state that a radiology request form is a clinical document used by physician referring patients for radiological investigations. All radiology request form has to be justified, and the necessary information should be included. Examination requested, requesting doctor’s signature, pertinent identifiers and clinical diagnosis are examples of what should be included in the
When becoming a family and general physician they have the freedom to make a decision without supervision (Family physician). When having the freedom of making a decision, be able to understand that the responsibility is in the hands of the physician. One major skill relating is making decisions and solving problems such as what is the best treatment for the patient, is it safe enough for the patient, or what are the risks of the treatments? Being able to analyze information and evaluate results to choose the best solution for the problem can help a physician at work (29-1062.00). Another major skill needed is being service orientation. Being service oriented is actively looking for ways to help people (29-1062.00). Service oriented keeps a physician’s mind and heart in the right place. Actively trying to help people describes a physician who is willing to do whatever they need for the patient and not give up on them. An ability also need is to be able to listen and understand information that is spoken through words and sentences also known as oral comprehension (29-1062.00). This specific skill is important because the physician must be able to understand their patient’s description or maybe having a problem with a nurse. This helps a physician’s career by giving a better understanding of what is wrong and how it might be able to fix it. This leads into another important skill that relates
The most important responsibility it to ensure that they are able to get clear and precise images so the radiologist can read them easier. They are also responsible for making sure the patients understand and are comfortable during the procedure. Radiographers must be sure to stay on schedule so that others are not waiting long, meaning that they need to have good time management skills. This is the only area that I may see myself struggling with because I love to talk to people and make sure that they are comfortable. As I talked to one of the Radiographers at Geary County Hospital, she told me that she often has this struggle also. She mentioned that some patients are less certain and nervous than others, so she likes to spend as much time as possible with this patient to make them feel better because she is an empathetic person, which is the exact same way I would be. I know that it is important to make sure that the patient feels safe, it is also important to stay on time. Knowing this, I believe I would be able to work hard and accomplish both of these things.
In the medical field you have so many people working for one person. One of the first thing that is done in an emergency room is an x- ray or ultrasound depending on where the pain is coming from and the condition of the patient. Ultrasound and radiology are a major part of the medical world you do not really hear about them that often, but in order for that hot shot doctor to save that person’s life he or she needs an image to diagnose. Without an image he or she would have no clue what is going on or where to make that cut. Imaging is greatly important in the medical field, while some difference between radiology and ultrasound are noticeable the similarities are striking
Ultrasound is a commonly used diagnostic imaging modality that involves the use of various frequencies of sound waves. The sound waves are created by means of the Piezoelectric effect, whereby an electrical current is induced through crystals on a transducer, causing them to produce mechanical vibrations which in turn generate ultrasonic sound waves. An image is produced when the waves are propagated through the body and reflected back towards the transducer.
Ultrasounds also known as ultrasonography is an imaging technique that uses high-frequency sound waves to make pictures of structures that bounce off internal body parts to create images for medical purposes. This high pitch frequency cannot be heard by the human ear. Over the years, these noninvasive procedures for the most part have replaced the invasive surgery. These procedures cause the patient less trauma and a lower risk of complications that could arise from the alternative surgery. Most ultrasound procedures are done by using a device on the outside of the body, though there are some ultrasounds that are transvaginal. A transvaginal ultrasound is a procedure that involves placing a tubular probe like stick inside the body. In a normal ultrasound procedure, the reflections of high-frequency sound waves that locate, measure and outline deep structures. The sound wave that is sent by an ultrasound Doppler transducer that will travel until it hits a boundary between tissues, which get reflected back to the probe. An ultrasound procedure is also less expensive compared to the surgical procedure. Ultrasounds have become an important procedure in the medical field. These procedures allow specialist to quickly evaluate the patient’s condition, and enable doctors to treat the condition before it is out of hand. Over the years studies have researched ultrasounds and have become more popular and easier to perform, there are many types of ultrasounds such as prenatal ultrasounds, therapeutic ultrasounds, prostate ultrasounds, cardiac ultrasounds, breast ultrasounds,
Science has dependably been an in number enthusiasm of mine and I generally knew I needed to seek after a profession in the therapeutic field. Nonetheless, I was undecided in the matter of what therapeutic profession until I went to an Aim Higher Science at Work meeting at the University of Portsmouth. I was given an understanding into a few professions and exhibits that spoke to them. Analytic Radiography truly enlivened me that day and it was by then that I knew this was what I needed to do. From that point forward, I have had the chance to pick up an unmistakable understanding into Radiography through conversing with my uncle, who is a qualified Diagnostic Radiographer, and I will be doing work involvement
Today’s ultrasound machines operate using the pulse-echo system. In order to produce an accurate representation of the anatomy being surveyed, the machine must determine echo’s strength and location. Ultrasound systems measure the time it takes for echoes to return and relates that to distance traveled to decipher location of reflectors using the range equation. Ultrasound equipment basically consists of four components, a beam former, receiver, processor, and display (Kaur, 2013). Figure 1 shows the pathway of the echo voltages through the ultrasound machine from first spark, through memory and display.
This week in my clinic I learned how to take lateral and ventral dorsal abdomen radiographs. This was really fun due to the fact that I have never actually helped, other than moving the patient, with taking radiographs. I was taught that before moving the patient I should have everything ready which includes the information on the patient should be in the computer and the mechanical restraints ready on the radiographic machine. I was also told that when getting the measurements with the caliper I should measure the thickest part of the abdomen. I learned that I should measure the patient when in the appropriate position for radiographs due to the fact that measuring the patient while standing can give inaccurate measurements. After putting
I will be talking about some of the duties this jobs brings. The first one I will be talking about is Communication skills. Physicians need to be excellent communicators. They must be able to communicate effectively with their patients and other healthcare support staff. I think this is a good one because many people have a hard time talking to others with this job it has you do a lot of talking being friendly with your patients. Secondly, Patience is a very important trait to have its helps you alot in this career because your set to work with different people everyday some with more needs or some with less needs.Physicians and may work for long periods with patients who need special attention. Children and adult patients who fear medical treatment may require more patience. Lastly, Problem-solving skills. Is an important skill to practice because they have to act fast because there's a life in their hands which is a very serious problem if they can't problem solve quick. Physicians and need to evaluate patients’ symptoms and administer the appropriate treatments. They often need to do this quickly in order to save a patient’s
