Diabetes Mellitus is a chronic medical condition that affects millions of people. This chronic condition is associated with high levels of glucose in the blood. As a newly diagnosed patient it is crucial to be aware how our bodies react to food consumption in regards to how insulin is produced to fully understand the concept of insulin production by the pancreas.
Breakdown
Usually after food consumption the pancreas reacts by producing insulin to break down carbohydrates. When an individual is diagnosed with diabetes, insulin either becomes absent or is insufficiently produced. Diabetes is a metabolic disease that result from these defects.
Types
There are two specific types of diabetes. Type 1 and Type 2. There are significant differences between the two, but both have similar symptoms and management.

This type of diabetes is caused by the pancreas not producing enough insulin, in result, they need to be insulin dependent.
Type 2 is adult onset diabetes. This type is where instead of being insulin dependent, they are insulin resistant. This type does not require insulin injections, but needs a complete tracking record of blood sugar levels before and after food consumption. A doctor usually will prescribe a glucose meter that does require the patient to prick their finger and collect their blood to analyze blood sugar levels. From here the patient must document their levels in their diabetes tracker.
Nutrition
A patient diagnosed with diabetes will experience symptoms associated with weight gain or weight loss. In order to control sugar levels, healthy nutrition is crucial. Our body obtains the energy by digesting the carbohydrates into glucose. Volumes of glucose are required by the body to create ATP. The blood flows through the pancreas where the beta cells, receptors, detect the high blood glucose level. To counteract this stimuli beta cells alert the control centre, which are also the beta cells located in the islets of Langerhans in the pancreas. The secretion of insulin has to be done quickly but can only be carried out when insulin gene is switched on. Turning on the insulin gene switch can take 30 minutes to an hour therefore, the production of insulin by beta cells are done in advance and are packaged in vesicles right until blood glucose rises. Glucose comes into the beta cell to trigger the vesicle that contains the insulin to move towards the plasma membrane and fuse. This releases the insulin into the bloodstream where they are distributed throughout the body and only affect specific target cells. Diabetes is a disease that causes an abnormally high level of sugar, or glucose, to build up in the blood. Glucose comes from food we consume and also from our liver and muscles. Blood delivers glucose to all the cells in the body. In people without diabetes, the pancreas makes a chemical called insulin which is released into the blood stream. Insulin helps the glucose from the food get into cells. When the pancreas doesn’t make insulin, it can’t get into the cells and the insulin stays in the blood stream. To understand what diabetes is, you must first have an understanding of the processes that your body goes through to maintain a healthy blood sugar level. After eating a meal glucose, or simple sugar, is released into you blood. Your blood sugar level rises, which alerts your pancreas to release a hormone called insulin. Insulin is what tells your cells to take the glucose and use it for either energy or convert it to glycogen. Glycogen is the stored form of glucose, which is later broken back down to glucose as your body needs energy. When the glucose is taken up by the cells for energy or converted into storage form, your blood sugar returns to a normal level called homeostasis.
