Deviance in sport This course has been a very interesting experience for me. The course and the presentation allowed me to see the world of sport in a different perspective. When I was researching the topic of race within sport, I was surprised by the amount of articles, books and newspaper articles that describe how racial identification has been used against many players, athletes and fans. As the class started to present their topics I was astounded by the different topics such as gender identity, racial identity, social class and finances that still face different challenges within the world of sport. I believe that the prominent ideologies within sport need to be adjusted. By adjusting these ideas there may be a way to make sport a more entertaining and safe area for many people. Throughout history, sport has played an important part in many cultures and civilizations. Historically, sport was used in the industrial revolution to make workers feel that the everyday activities were normal. Sport gave workers a sense of stability and structure that These prominent ideologies had the capacity to place people who had different views into categories. A very interesting aspect that I was introduced to was deviance within sport. Deviance can be used in various situations. Deviance in society is seen as breaking the “norms”. An example of deviance in sport would be a runner who has decided to give up in the middle of the race. Many people in the society of sport would see this as an athlete who has failed. Even though that same athlete might have avoided a serious injury. By not finishing the race the runner did not comply with what everyone around them expected to do.
