In the past decades, there has been a heated debate concerning whether design aesthetic or functionality should be the core of industrial design. Some believe design should be purely aesthetic. while others believe design should be appealing and functional. An aesthetic design should be visually appealing. On the other hand, a functional design focuses towards to the practicability of the design. However as a designer, I strongly believe a well executed design should be functional while maintaining a high level of visual aesthetic.
Although some believe aesthetic and functional aspects can seemingly separated from each other, but both aspects are considered inseparable in these days because of the advent of technology and the rapid changes of consumer’s preferences and behaviour. According to Luchs suggested the unity of product design aesthetic and functionality plays a significant role when it comes to consumers’ product preferences when unity refers to the perception that design aesthetic and functionality share common associations (2008, p.6). Disunified products are less preferred and accepted by consumers compare to an unified product. Research suggested this behaviour was mediated by the perception that unified products make more sense than disunified product (2008 Luchs). This theory is proven by the different levels of success experienced by early entrants to the hybrid car segment. Consider the fact that Honda and Toyota are the early entrants to the hybrid car segment and introduced hybrid car that offers identical hybrid technology, fuel economy, driving dynamics and seat capacity and space but Toyota decided to launch the Prius with unique form that was widely accepted and associated with the hybrid technology. Although Sullivan’s phrase has evolved the design world drastically however this philosophy is now considered as outdated. Interdisciplinary collaboration has proven to create products that suit today’s needs.
In conclusion, aesthetic and function play a significant part when it comes to industrial design. Although some believe design should be purely focus on aesthetic meanwhile the others believe design should be functional while has an appealing appearance. The research material clearly support the idea that design being function while visually appealing. To achieve that which requires involvement in various stages of design process and requires enormous amount of design thinking processes as well.
Have you ever thought how much research and effort a company has done to make their product appeal to you? A company will conduct surveys, record human responses to specific images, and adhere to government regulations not to mention all the different designs produced, just so that you will want to buy their product over their competitors. In Thomas Hine’s essay, What’s in a Package, Hine discusses the great length the response that a consumer should have when looking at a product’s packaging, the importance of manufactures’ marketing campaign, the importance of packages depending on the culture, then finally to why designs will change over time.

People are often deceived by some famous brands, which they will buy as useless commodities to feel they are distinctive. People require brands to experience the feeling of being special. People spend their money to have something from famous brands, like a bag from Coach or Louis Vuitton which they think they need, yet all that is just people’s wants. Steve McKevitt claims that people give more thought on features or brands when they need to buy a product, “It might even be the case that you do need a phone to carry out your work and a car to get around in, but what brand it is and, to a large extent, what features it has are really just want” (McKevitt, 145), which that means people care about brands more than their needs. Having shoes from Louis Vuitton or shoes that cost $30 it is designed for the same use.
“Form follows function.” Every great Modern architect thought, designed by and breathed these very words. Or at least, their design principles evolved from them. Modern architects Le Corbusier, Mies van der Rohe, Frank Lloyd Wright, Pierre Chareau, and Rudolf Schindler to name a few believed that the function determined the space whether the space was solely for a particular purpose or they overlapped to allow for multiple uses. Form didn’t just follow function, function defined the space. By focusing on the relationship between the architecture and the interior elements, Chareau’s Maison de Verre expanded the idea of functionalism to include not only the architecture but also the space it creates and how people function within that space.
One main item that could affect design is the concept of liability. In today’s day and age, organizations are quick to lay blame on an individual instead of looking at process improvement. For example, a manufacturing organization that identifies how to improve processes to avoid/correct seeing defects would strengthen the loyalty of its workers vs. one that identifies individuals to blame. The issue of whether customers should buy FWD and RWD cars is complex and controversial. Different people hold different ideas due to their drive experience and consumers attitudes. On one hand, lots of people believe that only RWD cars represent Luxury and high-performance. On the other hand, the car made on FWD are much cheaper and popular. However, most of customers are blind and ignorant on it. Many of them don’t even know the automobile layout of their sedan after use it for decades.
