The date was Friday November 23, 2012. That day wasn’t like any other day, it was Black Friday. Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving where crowds of people are drawn to special offers by retailers. Wal-Mart is the typical place for most people to go to to attain such items during Black Friday. I was one of those people. The item I was going for was a PlayStation3, a videogame console. The console itself was nothing too special other than it being half price of what it was 6 years ago which was $600 and having 12.5x more hard drive storage but not only was the price intriguing but also it being my first ever console made me want it more. I couldn’t wait for the day to arrive for when I can simply go to Wal-Mart to get the console and be …show more content…
On my way to Wal-Mart I thought nothing about what I was about to go through but after seeing how full the parking lot was I knew things wouldn’t be as simple as I had initially thought. I arrived 15 minutes early but considering the amount of people that were already there I knew they had been there for much longer. The people were crowded around the things they wanted but not being able to grab them since the event wouldn’t start until 8pm. The quantity of the items being displayed and the people wanting them did not match so many would leave empty handed, I feared I would too as my uncle had left me saying to meet at the front of the store when I had finished getting whatever I was going to get. After a lot of searching and going through crowds I finally came across the game consoles. The consoles were stacked on the ground and there were people completely surrounding them with only like 5 feet of space between them and their target. I counted the consoles and there were only 10 of them, there was no way I could get one especially with at least 3x more people wanting the consoles than there were consoles. When I was about to head back in defeat I heard someone yell out my name, it was my friend …show more content…
The time had come. Unprepared we both turned back around to the consoles and there were people jumping onto them and saw some people getting crushed by the people above them as they were the first to get a hands on them but were losing them as people were reaching and tugging under them so they could get one too even if it was already in the hands of someone else. Knowing we had failed at obtaining what we came for we watched hopelessly as people were starting to get up, some with consoles in their hands others empty handed but in a beat up looking state. As we walked away from the chaos we talked about how we potentially would’ve turned out if we had gone for the consoles at the same time as everyone else, the older people would for sure not have show any mercy to us. James went to go look for his parents so I did the same and went to the spot where I had planned to meet up with my uncle. After waiting a while I saw him come out with a big TV and 2 tablets so I knew that it at least went well for him while I got my hopes and dreams crushed. On the car ride home I thought about how it would be like playing video games which was what most of my friends played and they always talked about all the fun moments they would have in the games. I thought I would never get to have the experience of playing video games but thought that I would turn out fine since I hadn’t needed them for
It’s a place everyone knows, much like the post office or even city hall. Wal-Mart. That is where the oddity lies, in the fact that a retail store is just as well known as staples for towns across the nation; not to mention the fact that Wal-Mart isn’t just in the United States, but around the world. Founder of the billion dollar industry, Sam Walton, did expect success from his endeavor, but no one could have foreseen just how influential the retail store would be. Wal-Mart is an astonishingly successful business with humble beginnings, but may have a rocky road ahead in terms of social issues due to the treatment of employees and it's strong effects on the economy.
It is seen in everything from the hoarding of material objects to the destruction of friendships, both of which are popular themes when regarding the topic of Black Friday shopping. Black Friday has become Black Thursday, a trend which has only shown up within the last decade. The great American holiday that is Thanksgiving is celebrated because of our gratefulness toward all that we have, a holiday that is meant to be spent gathered around a table of our loved ones. However, the retail holiday that consumes the day afterward has begun to overflow into our gatherings, and it is due to the greed of the American people. Were it not for the market’s demand for earlier sales, stores would not open their sales on Thursday nights. Everyone would simply wait until early the next morning to start off on their shopping extravaganzas, and the sales themselves would likely be far less violent as
The first Walmart was opened in Rogers, Arkansas in the year 1962 by a 44-year-old man by the name of Sam Walton. When he first envisioned Walmart, Walton believed that a successful business could be built around offering lower prices and great service. Despite his retail rivals laughing at his supposedly unsustainable business model, the company became hugely successful, and its success exceeded even Walton's expectations. The company went public in 1970, and the proceeds financed a steady expansion of the business. Today, Walmart is the largest retailer in the world, as it has 8,500 stores spread across 15 countries and annual revenues of $400 billion dollars. Moreover, Walmart is the
“The last day of the meeting, the head of Barnes and Noble team up with other corporate people to see what items could be put in the store around the time of the biggest holiday of the year (which was Christmas) to keep the company stable and prevent it from shutting down. The company then owed so much money that they weren’t even making a profit and because they weren’t making a profit they eventually ended up having to stop shipping items the NeoStar.” (Gamestop Corp, 2013)
Walmart is a big retail store which offers a number of items to customers. It offers place utility as it is opened at a number of locations in Vancouver. A handful of people think that due to the growth of Walmart in surrey, the community of surrey is losing its distinctive character. But I am strongly disagreeing with the statement. In this essay, I will discuss the pros and cons of the growth of Walmart and its impact on the
Or should I say something was missing? Besides three or four cars the parking lot was empty. I was in shock. Even we are closed the parking lot is more full than it was at that moment. As I parked made my way to the store entrance I could see some of my managers and fellow employees standing outside with signs. “Don’t Feed Corporate Greed” and “Market Basket Strong” were plastered all over the place. Walking into the store was kind of scary. It was a ghost town. There was no one at the checkout and only one customer service women in the courtesy booth. She looked at me smiled and said “It’s going to be a busy day” in an extremely sarcastic voice. I chuckled, smiled back, and proceeded to log myself in. My manager came inside and asked if I wanted to protest. I was skeptical at first because I wasn’t quite sure if he was kidding or not. He enthusiastically handed me a large blank piece of poster paper and a marker. “Write something but keep it appropriate” he said. “This is a peaceful protest Tommy and we want to keep it that
The goal for my ethnographic study is subjected to the study of the people of Wal-Mart. Wal-Mart is a place that varies from city to city, but still attracts many of the same people. Everyone knows the weird people that wear ridiculous things to do their normal routine of shopping. That is why I have chosen to do my mini ethnography one day while shopping as an insider at the local Wal-Mart in Auburn, Alabama. Wal-Mart is a large center for shopping that attracts many different types of people, while creating an environment within itself.
Few companies create such controversy as Walmart has done with its approach to maintaining low costs for everyday items. People either love Walmart because of this approach to keeping prices down or hate it due to the effects it has on the economy. There are a lot of arguments surrounding the minimum wage and employee rights at Walmart. There seems to always be a news article about some employee protest about the wages or how they are treated. Walmart is viewed as an enormous firm that does not take care of its employees because of its minimum wage, treatment of its employees, and how it deals with lawsuits.
For hundreds of years Thanksgiving has been a holiday filled with traditions celebrating family and togetherness. The day after thanksgiving known as “Black Friday” is a day for shopping and taking advantage of greatly reduced prices. The recent decision by retailers to move Black Friday to Thursday, Thanksgiving Day, has caused quite a stir among many families. People have become upset over the decision to turn a day of gratitude and family, into another day of greed and violence. Retailers should not open their stores on Thanksgiving Day because doing so will cause many employees to miss out on spending a special day with their families, cause people to forget about the thanks and festivities that thanksgiving represents, and create more violence in stores and violence towards people.
My eyes shattered when I seen the younger Lebron James wearing his orange and white uniform on an actual video game. It was the greatest thing ever, seeing it as a child.Time was flying by and I played all the game modes I wanted to play. I Didn't really want to play anymore, so I went to turn off the playstation , and when I turned around, I forgot to wrap the cord around the controller.I tripped over the cord and boom went the playstation crashing onto the hard carpet. As I looked down at the playstation , and I looked at the missing pieces I was no longer the happiest kid in the
Would any self-respecting American shopper pass the opportunity to accumulate great items at extremely reduced prices? Of course not! The idea that there are people all around the country who are bold enough to criticize savvy shoppers just for trying to take advantage of great sales is awful. Huge sale events such as Black Friday receive relentless criticism year to year, but for no true reason. Targeted by people who are incapable of worrying about only themselves during the holiday season.
I went to the Queen Mary, it was fantastic. After spending almost a full day on the ship, I decided to go to a camera store before I went back to where I was staying. I didn’t have a particular camera store in mind, I just looked on my Iphone and found one that I hoped would have a good selection of old film cameras. After an hour drive, I was delighted to see this store filled with old cameras. It was staffed by a father and son team. The father was weirdly intent on getting cameras out the door, one guy asked if the 150 dollar price tag was negotiable, the dad shot back “75 dollars”, finally selling it for 50 bucks. I was thinking I had found the right place.
Shopping is something that has to be done whether you enjoy it or not to get essentials needed. We all go places where merchandize is being sold for a specific reason. Whether you go to the mall, shopping centers, or your local grocery store, you 'll always encounter many types of shoppers. Shopping isn’t always as fun as it sounds to everyone, but it is something we often do. This is the only way we get products we need, by personally buying them. You have three main shoppers including impulse buyers, list makers, and bargain hunters.
GameStop seemed to have fell off the face of the Earth as it was nowhere in sight. My mind scrambled on what my next action would be. I decided to choose the worst course of action: walk around. I didn’t stay and waited on a bench or didn’t try to find a security guard. To me deciding to walk around a mall I never been in, and in a state I haven’t been in since I was younger, was the best course of action. To this day I still don’t know the exact reasons I chose that option over the more reasonable, better options.
Christmas has always been a day full of surprises. Every Christmas there is something special that I look forward to, but one Christmas stands above the rest. This day will forever be in my heart as the best Christmas I have ever had, for good reason too. I received a gift that has become my haven for when times get tough. Ultimately, when I look back to that special Christmas, I realize that humans all around also have a “haven,” a way to escape reality, and my escape from reality is video games.
